I want to open up the debate here? My mantra has always been - clean install of server and migrate roles / files. However with the ever increasing demand for updates / upgrades and lack of downtime I want to reflect on is this still best practice / keep away. What are your thoughts on upgrading from Server 2016 / 2019 to Server 2025? Note: Not for DCs. I look forward to the comments!

Thanks for the comments so far, this is not for deployment this year, in the next 12 months or so (fingers crossed) the issues will be resolved with Server 25. Probably use education Datacentre so cost 'should' be OK. Although who knows...

The knowledge of all the IT Folk in education, where budgets and time are squeezed! What are people doing for OS Deployment? - we currently use MDT for Win 10 but know that Win 11 is no longer supported. Before we invest lots of time into MCM are there viable alternatives? Thanks as always!

We are of a similar thinking, the issue we keep coming back to is the requirements to ensure Safeguarding is effective and I feel that some of the Industry standard offerings are less focused on education so don't cover the key standard and I can only see Smoothwall that does this. I've had a look at Lightspeed and they do a similar offering to SW but no Firewall (Budgets are tight!)

Not at all, we are the same, we managed to open from an older version but.... I don't think we will get another year out of it!

Microsoft have confirmed to be that there is a bug and they are working on it. I've asked them if any filtering changes need to be made! Just awaiting this response....

I'd like to resurrect this thread - as the kit is now getting a little dated and we are concerned that security updates to Windows & Office may stop it working soon. Can anyone recommend any new versions / alternatives?!

Hi all, I've made some progress. I've found that the following update KB5011558 is the root cause of all our issues. The issue is : If I deploy the VM Template without checking or trying to install any updates, I can uninstall the above update.... If I have already installed any updates or tried, no matter what I do I cannot uninstall this update. Does anyone have any fool proof ways of uninstalling stubborn Windows Updates?

That's a good bit of information!! I love how well tested Microsoft Updates are!!! I'll refrain from updating on anything live although I'm still struggling with getting any cumulative update on! Could it be something to do with Sysprep from a VM Tempalte??

I've also just found it was a server template that the updates were installed prior to template creation then all cumulative updates after template deployment do not install. Banging my head against a wall now - any help greatly appreciated.
