I bought 100 of the 128GB SanDisk SSDs a few years ago to upgrade all our 3 year old PCs, timed it really well though as I was paying £23 + VAT each and the next week the prices started going up.

I know you're not using the XML, but forgot to mention - I found that XML from 1607 didn't work on 1703, but 1703 XML did work on 1607 (but not on 1511). So if you have multiple versions you'll struggle (we are a mix of 1607/1703 with only one 1511 which is the PC that runs our ID card printer, because we don't want to reinstall the software and it's only used by IT support so the start menu isn't critical).

We've never used CSM - so on 1511 we suffered the layout breaking (the redirected folder still showed). The other 1511 problem was where clicking the start button did absolutely nothing at all until the local profile was deleted - our workaround was to copy the tiles off the layout to a shared desktop. We're on 1703 now and I can't remember the last time I had a proper start layout issue, there's still little things going wrong (some people don't have all of the more recent tiles, it seems to cache the layout file in the local profile) but we just put up with that as they can still get at everything they need under the program list. Never had a problem with redirected start menus though, the apps list on the start menu has always showed the redirected contents (although mixed in with the stuff you can't remove like "Support Centre" or whatever its called). We have the XML files stored in a folder inside the netlogon share, then the GPOs point to \\domain\netlogon\environment10\stafflayout.xml (or studentlayout.xml).

Too warm for snow up in the North West (Blackpool), forecast shows 4C today rising to 10 later in the week. It's currently clear skies and sunny but very windy. Not sure if I want the snow or not, it looks nice but it's cold and wet, and we typically don't close school for snow (in 2010 when we had weeks of snow we closed for half a day, all the state schools had 1-2 weeks off).

You can guarantee that in 2020 none of the big flash based school sites will have bothered to change anything at all (and o2 business will still have a flash based online billing tool), and we're left to take the blame/abuse when no access to flash means "I can't teach" Edit: We ended up allowing the flash plugin on https://* and http://* as there were some sites that just didn't work even if you added their domains to the list

Does anybody know how to change the startup image on an orange Sanyo projector (I think its something like XE40)? All projectors at the school we merged with were set to the school logo rather than just "SANYO", I've found one room where we didn't replace the projector and since the merger it's now got the wrong logo. I can vaguely remember you had to hold a button down on the remote whilst having the screen you wanted capturing open on the PC but my memory's not good enough, and apparently neither are my google skills

Wish I could remember the name, all I remember is they talk so fast and for so long, I had one of them swear his "super high capacity" toner was 3 x higher than a ultra high capacity HP toners (20k copies, so his were 60k copies apparently). Then two toners you didn't place an order for turn up and they're the cheapest remanufactured toners in the world worth about £20 each along with an invoice for £419 for a 2 pack. I had a look at one and they weren't even new drums, at the time we were paying about £50 a go for a decent reman with new drums in them.

The amount of people who have left (or want to but are tied in) because of how painfully slow it is.. it must be nearly 100% of people. There is no way the problem is with every single school's network like they claim. Before we cancelled I tried it in the holidays with just my PC plugged into the router, direct connection with no filtering, bypassing the proxy etc and it was still ridiculously slow. If a 100Mbps line dedicated to a single PC isn't fast enough then what do they expect people to use? We never resolved it so just left. In our case the librarian had stopped using it and reverted to an excel spreadsheet a couple of years prior (probably not long after we moved from the self hosted one) so it annoys me that they had a few years worth of renewals out of us with the product not even being used. When we changed librarians (and I found out about this) I tried to get it going again with the new librarian but it was just so slow, and support so useless (I had a ticket open for months about importing users from AD with no useful response) we just gave it up as a bad job.

We put a 4000 lumens Sony in our hall (projector is at the back, mounted in the projection room, so it has a ~30m throw). Cost a fortune as we had to get the extra long throw lens and even with that the smallest the image goes is the entire of the stage backdrop. It's bright enough with the lights off, you can still see it okay with them on but it's not as clear. It probably could do with being 6000 lumens although it is also an old projector (we did this in 2008, and it's had one new lamp since)

If you are deploying it as a GP Preferences you can go into the second tab, then click on Item Targetting and filter it by security group, e.g. only apply to members of the Students group.

We did the opposite and started with LTSB (1511), discovered how broken the start menu layout was (randomly going to a plain black screen, fix being to delete the local profile), and had to go through Enterprise 1607 then 1703 to finally get an almost-reliable user experience (except for the fact GPP printer mapping has been awful all the way through, LTSB and Enterprise)

This. I'm sick of telling people almost daily "restart the computer and if you're lucky your printers will re-appear" when they either fail to map for no reason at logon, or just vanish completely halfway through the day with no trace of where they went in the event log.

From what I've understood the problem is they provide content filtering (Lightspeed) as part of the package, so the slowness is running tens of Gbps through a Lightspeed cluster. We used to have a central filtering system in our trust (everyone had MPLS back to the data centre then a shared filtering platform then out to the Internet), slowed down when other schools were hammering it. I'm not excusing the problems at all but I don't feel its a like for like comparison against something like a standard leased line. (I'm not a customer, we have a Virgin (soon to be Gamma) leased line and we have our own on site smoothwall filtering so this may all be incorrect but it's just what I've gathered from reading through the thread)

Depending on the backup software you *should* be able to back up files you don't have permission to access if you are a member of the Backup Operators group (there's a switch when using robocopy which retries access denied files in backup mode to bypass permissions). However it doesn't matter what you set the NTFS permissions to, there is no way to prevent an administrator from taking ownership of any file/folder (even when they don't have permissions) and then resetting permissions to gain access. We have a SLT share which is similar (but not encrypted), I don't have permission to access it using my everyday use logon but I can get at it as a domain admin as there's always times you need to get into it ("Can you add this person to the permissions but read only", "I tried to copy this folder and it deleted itself" etc)

We've got a mix of approx 30 1910/1920/1920S edge switches, mixture of 48 port gigabit and 24 port gigabit PoE, we've found them perfectly adequate (providing you don't want to do anything in the CLI). You can still do config through the web interface. I also found the Unifi switches more expensive than the 1920S range, at least for a 48 port gigabit (non-PoE) when I looked yesterday. (We use a 5406 for the core and each switch rack has its 1910/1920/1920S connecting into a 2530, which in turn has a 10gig link to the core switch)

This is why I stopped using SoftCat, I still get a reply out of XMA but by the time they reply I've already had quotes back from elsewhere and placed the order and had it delivered.

It might be worth seeing what an IT recycler will pay for them - most offer cashback for any items with resale value. Obviously it will be less than you could get yourself ebaying etc them but you then remove all the extra work/hassle involved with selling them, collecting the money, dealing with complaints etc. You can then work out if it's worth the extra money you'd make selling to staff vs the amount of hassle it will be.

Where I mentioned them earlier, they are purely there for "if you are stuck in the server room when it sets on fire, use it to attempt to evacuate". Our server room probably has somebody in it at most 10 minutes a day as it's nowhere near our office. There's heat/smoke detectors in there so if there is a fire we will be evacuating the site and waiting for the fire brigade to sort it out! No amount of servers are worth risking life to go and put the fire out. As someone has said, the cost of retro-fitting a gas based fire suppression system is probably more than the cost of just replacing the servers should it happen (which would be covered under insurance anyway)

We discovered it was a certain department (can't remember which, was either science or maths) which was saving their budget by not buying text books (so they could spend it on other stuff) and instead printing huge stacks of paper for every pupil they taught. We're using Ringdale FollowMe at the moment but next year we will be switching to Papercut with new copiers, hoping to bring back departmental billing for printing in conjunction with reprographics doing the same - split the printing budget equally across all departments and add it to their individual departmental budgets, they then pay for their own printing or, if they print less, buy other stuff with it.

On any domain joined machine, "Domain Users" is a member of the local "Users" group (in the same way that "Domain Admins" is a member of the local "Administrators" group)

It will be the "Users (Special)" one allowing all users create permission

As others have said, you will probably be inheriting "Everyone - Create" from the root of the drive, take that one out and it should work as expected.

It might just be a coincidence, or maybe they haven't tried using the laptops this week, but since replacing HP MSM460 with Ubiquiti AC-Pros we've gone from constant complaints to none, similar to other people's experience. Obviously now I've said this everything's going to come crashing down and fail spectacularly tomorrow to prove me wrong.....
