Thank you, I'll give that a try. That does make sense where it comes to Microsofts way of thinking!

Help, I am having a real problem removing two network printers via print manager that i have narrowed down to causing the Print Spool service to stop seconds after restarting. We are in the process of replacing the server that runs our network printers. So exported from the first servers Print Manager and imported into the new one. The major difference is the older server is Server 2008r2 and we are replacing it with Server 2016 Standard. We have decided to no longer use PCounter so knew i would need to manually create the new IP ports on the new server. Everything was going well until i reached these two specific printers. The printers are the same make and model, HP Colour LaserJet M553. It doesn't matter what i do i am unable to delete these printers from the Print Manager and this includes their respective ports and driver! I have been googling like mad, tried some suggestions, removing from registry, removing via Devices and Printers etc. but to no avail. When in print manager after restarting the print service i am able to right click and delete but after a few seconds i get the error "Printer cannot be removed. The remote procedure call failed" and then again the Spooler service stops. I have been able to remove all the other printers in between restarting the Spooler. I have even removed the role via Server Manager, removed the local server and they are still there. Please please there must be away to do this? Any thoughts or ideas would be very much appreciated as this is causing real frustration.

We have an odd quirk that is cause a head scratch. We have a custom desktop wallpaper that is applied by GPO. We used the same wallpaper and GPO settings when we used Windows 7 and never had the following problem. Our current version is Windows 10 1803 Education. When a computer first joins the domain the wallpaper is applied and sits happily forever. However, is a user manages to log in without a network connection or loses a network connection during a session the desktop for that user turns black. Once the network connection returns, even after a reboot etc. the wallpaper still stays black! The only way we can change this state is by deleting the profile of the effected user, which does cause irritation for the user, as they have hit save for every password they ever have used which they can no longer remember! Do any of you have any idea while this is happening or how we can resolve this? No amount of Googling is brings up sensible results. Cheers in advance.

We have an frustrating odd issue within Word 2016 where it comes to printing. It is installed on computers with Windows 10 Education 1803. If you type any less than one paragraph it won't print!! Is goes through the action of printing as in spools then vanishes and nothing prints. Yet if you add a more text it prints without any problem. All other programs seem to work fine when printing no matter how many words or paragraphs. We have updated drivers, also universal drivers, checked printer and Word settings, but nothing i can see that would effect printing. Anyone have any ideas what this issue could be or how to resolve it? Cheers in advance.

Hi all, I have a very frustrating issue. Randomly 4 machines on our network, 2 desktop and 2 laptops, different makes and models which have a network connection and can access the various shares we have on the network. The problem being when you try and browse the internet we get "page cannot be displayed" or "Server not found." This happens in all browsers, Chrome, IE. If however I ping the website we get a successful reply as also when a tracert is done. 3 of the machines are installed with Windows 7 and the 4th is Windows 10 so not O/S specific. This is what i have tried so far: 1) Basics: Wifi switch, network cables 2) Repair Adapter 3) Reinstall Drivers 4) Boot in Safe Mode w/ Networking 5) Virus/Malware/Rootkit/Adware Scans 6) ipconfig /release /renew 7) Flush DNS 8) netsh winsock reset 9) No proxies set -> all default obtain automatically. 10) Uninstall all 3rd Party Firewalls/Antivirus, Turn Off Windows Firewall 11) Re-imaged the computers I'm really stuck on this one and would appreciate any help? Thank you very much in advance if any of you guys have any ideas!

Doesn't Chrome have its own option to mute tabs etc? has this been set to mute by mistake?

Yes we use the Edu version to, no reason to go Pro, this site gives useful help on removing apps https://www.maketecheasier.com/uninstall-pre-installed-apps-windows-10/ but you can PM as we use just to lines within Powershell with the same result.

We seem to resolve one issue with Windows 10 to have another to appear!! Frustrating isn't the word. We are running Windows 10 1803 and Office 2016. A lot of users are having issues initially opening .xlsx files. When they double click they get the following error "Sorry, we couldn't open 'drive%filepath%filename.xlsx'" Our users homeareas are mapped to 'N'. The drive letter on these errors are random, sometimes 'X' or even 'Z'. In most cases if the user closes Excel and and opens the file it opens fine. For some it just persists, the only way to resolve is to delete the local profile or them to log onto another PC. Has anyone else seen this same error, or any ideas why this is happening, if indeed any idea on how to stop it happening? We applied some cache fixes but just can't work out the oddity of the the drive letter being different within this error???

Just to update, we think we have solved it. It appears to be an issue in Windows 10 1803 not starting the services fdPHost and fdResPub. Set by default to manual start. Enabled this via GPO under Computer Config -> Preferences -> Control Panel -> Services and all now seems to be working as is. Hope this helps others and thanks for everyone for taking the time help solve this.

None of the above seems to have cured this problem. It definitely centres around Windows 10 machines. Offline syncing all switch off in the GPO of users and computers, restarted the DNS. You can have a Windows 10 and Windows 7 computer side by side and the file isn't appearing on the Windows 10 computer but is on the windows 7 one???
-
No harm in giving this a try either, many thanks.
-
Yes mapped via GPO, trying the solutions mentioned by Aleach2

Brilliant, I will try that and see if it improves things, many thanks.

Hi, thanks for your reply, no our backups all run over night.

We have a frustrating issue with Windows 10 file explore with what appears to be vanishing files? A user will view their homearea folder on a workstation and all files will be present. They can then return to the folder a while later on the same workstation and it appears that some of the files have gone, vanished. Although If at the same time I RDC into the server the files are indeed present. A refresh of the file explorer still won't show the files. Then after a short period the user on the same workstation can return to there homearea and all files are present and correct?!?!? Does anyone have any ideas what is going on and what is causing this issue. It is causing frustration not only to us, but to the teachers and students. Thank you in advance for any ideas any of you may have.

To be honest, none that we notice. But in general it works ok, just a few glitches.
-
I feel your pain, but windows 10 in general hasn't been to bad for us. We use the Education version and using local profiles but we are not without odd issues. One serious one we cannot seem to solve I posted about here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-10/199713-windows-10-office-2016-temp-files.html

Hi all, I don't know if any of you have seen this same issue. We are currently upgrading our workstations for Windows 7 with Office 2007 to Windows 10 with office 2016. Because of licensing and amount of workstation we have a mixture. The issue we are having seems to only affect the Windows 10 with office 2016 where users appear to be losing their work to temp files. They work on one workstation quite happily, then save their files. When they go to re-open the files they are no longer there with a message stating the file no longer exists, has been moved etc. Upon investigation we find that they are still temp files. If the temp file is opened on the workstation that created the file, 9 times out of 10 it will open. But on other workstations they can't. A quick google search identified a similar issue reported to Microsoft who's answer is basically not us, check your AV. I have set exclusions on our AV to accommodate this. We wondered if it was because of the two different versions of Office, so via GPO made it so the defaults for Office 2016 be set to 97-2003 and to run in compatibility mode. But the problem appears to be getting worse particularly with Powerpoints and causing frustration all around. Thank you in advance for anyone that has any ideas or solutions. David

Nope just check, none are set there but it does appear to be working now??? I'll test it in one of the IT Suites. I'm David by the way.
-
I'm just doing one more just now to check as both yesterday did. I take a look at the properties
-
I'll take a look and see, but to my knowledge no. I inherited this system just under 2 years ago.
-
Very odd, I change to PXE and it appears to have worked?? I'm testing it on another computer unless is was a lucky coincidence.
