Teacher training - what fundamental skills should be expected from a teacher
mw184 replied to Ditto's topic in General Chat
I think what is meant by basic troubleshooting here is checking something is plugged in before calling IT. Or checking the computer is actually turned on. Trying restarting the machine to see if the issue continues. Techs who fix issues for a living (first line etc) would not be out of a job. They are still going to be needed when the laptop fails or is smashed to bits and a screen needs replacing. Or when a driver goes haywire causing issues. To setup machines and accounts etc and also spend time learning and expanding their knowledge. It's things like not needed to call IT every time the printer jams that we are talking about. There are still so many things that a tech can do, and the whole business would benefit from having them be able to focus their time on the real issues and not the "walk in, press the power button and walk out" problems that I am certain we all have experienced. Even assisting the Network Manager on projects to help them lessen the load. We all know IT is often understaffed and being able to have your team focused without those interruptions that may be 2 second fixes but also take the long walk to the issue in the first place, would lessen the load and make everyone's lives less stressful and also the school would be happier when jobs get completed in a shorter time frame and to a higher standard, rather than rushed out of the door like most projects end up being. Not wanting to come across as having a go or anything, just putting my view on this one across as I think it is an important part of the whole discussion around these topics. -
Teacher training - what fundamental skills should be expected from a teacher

Could this be an attitude issue in Education then? I know in many private sector businesses you would be expected to know this and they wouldn't tolerate people working for years and still not knowing. So is this a case of in Education we are so glued to schemes and set out ways of doing things by the Government for example, that we happily let these things slide when in other places it would not be tolerated? For example a classic case of "They don't mention it, therefore it isn't important" which leads to it being neglected? Are schools so scared of things like OFSTEAD that they stick to letter of these schemes and other really important things get left behind? Which hints at it being an issue in the core of the education sector itself and not one individual person. -

I think as far as an IT field goes, and speaking from personal experience, a lot of staff use computers on a daily basis now and it is everyday things that they seem to struggle with when using them. I must admit that I sometimes do forget that staff do not have my level of experience using technology as I do and that is something I am working on to be a better person and a batter Network Manager for the school. Most of the staff I deal with here are RQT or NQT (or whatever the new version of those are) and so I do find it concerning when they are fresh out of uni and cannot do this stuff. I want to say now I am not teacher bashing here in the slightest, I have a massive respect for everything they do and I know how challenging their jobs are and especially during this pandemic how hard they have worked. To get to my point, if staff cannot teach how to do these basic functions, we end up stuck in a vicious circle. As IT we spend the time to learn how to do things off our own backs (often without credit or recognition as several people have eluded to) but those who are not in IT most likely wont do this. If the teachers of today cannot teach this basic technology, the teachers of tomorrow are not going to know it either, and so the cycle continues generation after generation. Is it that staff are not interested or do not have the right training, I don't know. But I do know I try my hardest to help to train staff and even threw myself into teaching without any training by going into classes and teaching IT when requested by staff to try and address the issue. My concern is that if as a global body in education we keep on prioritising things and not focusing on others as well, we are never going to break this cycle and inevitable children are going to be held back in a world that is becoming more and more technology dependant day after day. Again I am not saying it is the teachers fault, and I have massive respect for them all, and I see every day that new teachers out of uni struggle with technology and this goes back to the beginning when tech was just coming into school in a mainstream way and staff might not have been trained enough to teach it properly then. And with the ever evolving landscape of tech bringing changes regularly, it can be very hard to keep up. But the core skills remain the same across all generations for the most part. I think it is more of an issue in education as a whole, not with staff and individual teachers. -

Only preparation I have made is giving a fresh set of login labels to the classes as the kids can't remember their details and they keep losing things (Primary School so remembering an email address and password is hard for most here). Wasn't asked to do it but thought it was only sensible. No news here regarding setting any machines up etc and since I am on my own this time, I would like to know a bit more in advance if they know something i don't in management. -
I think strategy wise though this goes back to the very start of the safety car period. With 8 laps left (I believe it was 8) there was always a chance the incident gets cleared away in maybe 4 laps and underway again. It is always a gamble and surly as a race team you cannot bank on the race finishing under safety car. That decision has to be made immediately and stuck with before there is any indication of how long it will take to clear the incident, so you have to make that call and hope it was right. This time Mercedes came off worse. It is those split second decisions at the start of an SC (often before we even know what happened to call it out) which are the big ones. I am in no way saying that the restart was fair and correct as everyone will have a different opinion on that and that's up to the stewards (glad I don't have their job right now), but strategy decisions were made way before the end of that safety car.
-
Not what I am suggesting. If the incident had happened a couple of laps earlier is what I was meaning. There would never be a time it is brought out for no reason, which is also not what I said. Teams should always be ready for safety cars as they can happen at any time as we saw. It is then down to them to play the strategy and hope they make the right call.
-
Massi, Mercedes and Red Bull all agreed they wanted to finish the championship battle on the track, not in the stewards room and not behind a safety car. Massi did what had to be done to make that happen. If the safety car had come out a couple of laps earlier, all of the lapped cars would have been allowed through, Max would still have been behind Lewis at the restart and would still have overtaken due to the tire advantage. Mercedes lost the race because they did not pit for fresh tires and RedBull played their strategy perfectly for that SC getting Max new rubber. Mercedes can only blame themselves for not playing their strategy right. On another note I believe Team Boss's should not be able to talk directly to the Race Director during races like that. Toto and Horner both sending him radio messages whilst he is organising a restart shows they both are trying to influence the race. In my opinion in this matter, Toto was much worse for this and was shouting at the race director telling him he is wrong, where as Horner just asked about letting lapped cars through. Also Mercedes bringing a QC to the race shows they were never going to accept the race outcome if they lost. Shows their true colours to me to be honest.

I second Mosyle, been using it for a couple of years now and have never looked back!

I don't believe it is linked to the recent update issues as I prevented the update being pushed when I saw the problems that it has caused, and this issue has been happening for around a month now (but half term broke that up a bit) so since before the update was released. As for the server restart, I tried that as one of my first tests. Since I preach about the turn it off and on again here to some people, I thought I should follow my own advice haha!
-
I am not entirely sure if I am honest as I cannot find the setting for it. I assume on the printer itself as we have had rare occasions of large volumes of pictures causing holdups on the printers, with the printers reporting it is spooling them. Quick update on the drivers, turns out according to the printer service IT, we were given a very old and out of date print driver for our printers. This has now been updated to the latest one and once machines have been restarted tonight they should update. Until then the machines should be able to print on the old driver still so i will see how this goes.
-
Thanks for your suggestions once again! I have just checked on the server and on the printers the option to render on device is checked so I have unchecked it and I will see how it goes. On the driver front, I have organised a chat with one of the IT team from our printer company to check if this could be the issue, and if it is to get them to provide a better driver to me, so I shall keep this thread up to date as I go.

Although I can say for sure that the issue appears to be more severe in Microsoft Office application from what I am experiencing on my device. And just to complicate matters, my laptop is running Windows 11 as I am using it to test it for the future etc.
-
My laptop has the issue when using any application such as word, adobe reader, even just browsers. Yet running that test print went through without issue so now I am more confused. I am wondering if the server that is running the Print Management simply cannot handle the job which is also concerning as its hardware is more powerful than the old one that died...
-
So going through your suggestions here are the following results: Printing test pages from the server and my laptop completed almost instantly with no hang like other scenarios. All of the required ports are configured correctly in the firewall. The printers are running the 64bit version of the universal driver for Sharp (Sharp UD2 PCL6) which is provided by our printer company. Subnet mask and gateway are all identical on all machines. SMB is new to me so I would not know where to go to check this on Windows 10 or the server so I will do some digging into that one. I am getting close to doing that to be honest, I can use the migration tool to migrate it over to the other server, and then run manual installs on our Intune devices (this is a hybrid environment of onsite domain and intune depending on the device, with the move to intune being the end goal) Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a bit of a strange issue going on here and I am hoping someone has encountered it before. Quick bit of background. I inherited this network back in July of this year after my old manager, who was the network manager, left. I got promoted to Network Manager and took over the running of the network. Towards the end of last term, the server that ran the print management died. As this is all it ran (old server not powerful enough to do anything else) it was not backed up. I have 2 other servers on site. A "file server" running 2008r2 (I know, I am desperate to either upgrade or replace it, but money is not there to do it. It gives me nightmares regularly) and our primary domain controller running 2012. The 2012 server handles DNS, SIMS, GPO, AD etc etc, and the "file server" runs as a failover for core services if the domain controller goes down. When the print server died, I rebuilt it on the "file server" as it had more storage space available and isn't handling too many core services. Rebuild went well (first time ever doing it) and everything setup and pushed out. Currently though we are experiencing hanging when printing across the whole network, which we have never encountered before now. The drivers for the printers are the same as before and you can connect through to the server over ping instantly as everything is wired in and running through our switches etc, and the same goes for the printers. I have checked everything I can think to check, but for some reason it seems to hang when connecting to the printer, and then when the print button is pressed. This behaviour is the same across both of the printers on the network and I do not know why. Does anyone have any ideas? I am banging my head against the wall with this, and soon my colleagues will be slamming my head against the wall for me I think! Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestions all! We are looking to go down the route of sharing the work with them over OneNote etc and them accessing it on a device, rather than sharing the screen as @Boredguy mentioned. Myself and the business manager who is our Data Protection Officer just have too many concerns regarding the screen being mirrored etc with GDPR etc (e.g. our staff have a habit of leaving things like half finished CPOMS in a tab, freezing the board and editing it on their screen, which would all still be visible on the mirrored device, and the risk of them forgetting to stop the share is too high for us unfortunately.) Thanks for all the suggestions though everyone!

Not entirely sure if this is the right place for this post, so Mods feel free to move it to an appropriate area! I have been asked to provide an iPad to a student as they cannot see the screen in the classroom properly due to some sight issues. I have been asked to mirror the screen to the iPad so they can look at the screen closer on their iPad. My question is; has anyone got any apps that allow them to do this in your schools? I have been searching online and I can find loads that will mirror from the iPad to the PC but not from the PC to the iPad and those that claim to do this have not worked when I have tested them. The setup in the classrooms is a Windows 10 PC hooked up to an interactive screen only, and an iPad for the child running up to date iOS. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Windows update 06/09/21 has broken Onenote for Windows 10
mw184 replied to chazzy2501's topic in Windows 10
I can confirm that one here too. Also people reporting the issue on iOS, MacOS and Android on reddit: Sync Error E000006B blg57 : OneNote (reddit.com) Looks OneNote works fine, just not OneNote for Windows 10. Office 365 cloud version works fine as well. -

We had no mask wearing in our place. Only myself and one other member of staff who is also vulnerable had them on and even then we got looks as if there was something wrong with us. I think most people in my place think it doesn't exist anymore. Going to be hiding in my office as much as possible to avoid the wave of inevitable cases that are going to hit. Scotland's data has proven that schools are major transmitters, and I believe they still have some more restrictions in place than we do. -

I am. We have had all staff in the hall for training for the first time in over a year today. And we had no social distancing so we were sat right next to each other. I am clinically vulnerable so sat at the back and at the end of a row but even then didn't feel very safe. All of our staff appear to be double jabbed but still doesn't stop it from being spread etc. Must admit felt very anxious about it all. -
Are you looking forward to getting stuck in to all your Summer jobs!
mw184 replied to kennysarmy's topic in General Chat
First summer as network manager for me (take over on Monday and breakup on Thursday so not much time to plan). Reimage all PC's. Testing hybrid domain deployment (currently run onsite AD and GPO but moving all file storage etc to OneDrive and SharePoint). Usual account creation and year group roll ups. Some data work. Pat Testing. Network plan updates. Network updates (Firmware etc). Documentation updates. Going to be busy as a one man team for the first time in my career with my current boss leaving on Friday.
