  1. Greetings, I think im being extremely thick here but im going to ask anyway. Is profile manager used for deploying apps to osx? Or is it simply for only the management side of osx and deploying apps to ios only? Thanks James
  2. Its only really till the end of the school year so as a stopgap ive put chrome on them as suggested. Thanks all
  3. I've just installed Chrome and the sites work which seems to point to ie8 as the weak leak. Ive already defaulted the settings in IE8, not sure what else i can do.
  4. I have two clients both trying to access a website, one win7 ie9 and one winxp ie8. The win7 client loads the site fine however the winxp client sits there trying connect. On the xp client the status says it is connecting to site xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and after a few mins fails to load. Both clients are logged in with the same user, with the same rights to the content filter. The logs on the content filter show that the xp client is trying to connect to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx however it shows the win7 client is trying to connect to website.co.uk. The xp client is being blocked by our content filter claiming its unknown non-http traffic. The win7 client goes through as expected. Both machines have dhcp addresses in the same range and subnet, same default gateway, same ie config, same dns servers, same everything. The majority of sites work no problem but quite a few dont such as google apps, bbc, all of which according to the content filter are being accessed by unresolved ip only.I hope this makes sense, can any one suggest what the problem could be?Thanks
  5. Thanks for your replies guys. Ive had a check at the meru controller setup, one option confuses me a little. Here is the blurb from the manual regarding dhcp passthrough. Currently we have this option turned on, from what is said below please can you confirm whether that is correct as im thinking it should be off. In the DHCP Relay Passthrough, select one of the following: On: Enables the DHCP Passthrough; the default setting where DHCP packets are passed through the controller unchanged. With this option, you must configure DHCP relay on any routers between the 802.11 clients and the DHCP server. With this setting, the DHCP Server IP address field in Step 6. is ignored. Off: Disables the DHCP Passthrough. With this setting, DHCP relay
  6. Interesting thought, how would i go about finding out? Although, if was something from home use i expect it would be a different gateway and subnet being assigned. Ive got noone complaining about network access problems so far.
  7. When this has happened in the past, ive checked to see if the offending devices had static addresses, they did not. They were on dhcp.
  8. Yes its our dhcp server. Its not showing those addresses being leased because theyre excluded from distribution. The meru controller however does show theyre being issued. I had the same problem today, my nas storage was playing up, i did an arp /a to show what mac was assigned to that address and it showed the nas box. I shut down the nas box, cleared the arp cache and after 5 mins checked again, lo and behold a different mac address which turned out to be a students phone on the wireless. Something is definitely not right.
  9. Hi all, Still getting this problem, does anyone have an idea what may be causing this? Thanks James
  10. Thats the answer ive been looking for. Will give it a try and see if it works, that way i can just bind the client to the domain and log them on as normal. Thanks James
  11. Greetings, When browsing through the station list on my meru controller I'm disturbed to see IP addresses that are excluded from distribution being allocated. We've had a lot of problems lately with networking whereby student phones seem to be taking addresses which are statically assigned to to servers. In my dhcp address pool I have those addresses specifially excluded from use so i cant understand why they are being reported as used. Im not sure where the fault lies, im posting about it here because its only on the meru controller that ive noticed this problem. Any advice would be welcome. James
  12. When i say security settings i mean acl's, something in the way i have them set stops the mac being able to map a users home drive. Every user has full access to their home drive so im guessing its another permission thats set. I set a permission free area up and that worked fine.
  13. Greetings, Im investigating switching to macs for music tech, i think for basic garageband with audio interfaces they are quite comparable with pc cost. My main decision is to how i go about their access to the windows domain, I have the following two choices. 1. A standalone network using a mac mini with osx server. Students having identical logons to their windows accounts. Students would only be able to do their music tech work and would not have access to network resources. They would be able to create office docs with office for mac and would have to email their work to themselves to be able to finish it on other computers. 2. Binding mac to windows domain. Students could access their network home drives and be able to save directly to them. Will need total change of network share/file system permissions to allow macos to access home drive correctly. This would also create dozens of extra folders in each students user areas plus store important files there which the students could easily delete. 3. Same as option one but use boot camp to allow installation of windows for use by other departments. Ive not imaged macs before so unsure how this would work with dual boot setup. Im not sure how having a mac osx server on the network will affect my windows domain (or even if it will). Any advice is welcome. Thanks James
  14. We had a few quotes in so far and the focusrite seem to be quite popular. Its changed a little in that we are now considering macs for garageband and dualbooting them for normal it lesson use. Still no definite decision though
  15. copied from a microsoftkb article DPAPI Environmental Considerations This section describes the environmental configurations that affect the behavior of DPAPI protection. DPAPI and Mandatory Profiles Mandatory profiles are read-only profiles. No updates that are made to the local copy of a mandatory profile are saved. For example, key generation is blocked in a mandatory profile. DPAPI stores the master key in the local copy of a profile and regularly creates new master keys and updates the encryption on the protected confidential information with the new master key. Because these two conditions are incompatible, programs that depend on DPAPI to help protect confidential information do not work correctly with mandatory profiles. Programs that help protect confidential information with DPAPI that do not work correctly with mandatory profiles include EFS (private keys), Certificates with Private Keys (private keys), and Stored Credentials in Windows XP and later (credentials). Configurations that use these data types or programs are not supported. How to troubleshoot the Data Protection API (DPAPI) - - - Updated - - - I know that my previous reply refers to windows xp but its still valid for win7
  16. Having the crypto error with my installation too. Logged in with standard staff user, doesnt work. Logged in as local admin and it works fine. Here is why the cryptographic errors occur with mandatory profiles RSACryptoServiceProvider fails when used with mandatory profiles - Decrypt my World - Site Home - MSDN Blogs Seems the best way is a roaming profile as suggested by other users on this thread. Will investigate further.

  18. Thanks guys. I was looking at HAP as a possibility but i'm uncertain what changes id need to make to my network in order to set it up and run it securely.
  19. Greetings, Im having more and more requests these days to allow outside access to network shares and to move some of our externally hosted apps in house to save hosting costs. I have a forefront 2010 TMG firewall setup as an edge firewall so nothing is outside of the network. I've never hosted anything before and I would appreciate some suggestions on where to start and how to make it secure. Thanks James
  20. just run rsop user sessions as each user logged in and rsop computer sessions on two different machines. Both are the same in each case.
  21. Greetings, I have a problem whereby i have two users, both in the same ou, both with the same forced mandatory profile, both recieving the same policies and both members of the same security group. When i log onto a client pc however, one can run a particular program that the other cannot. I can recreate this issue on other pcs so it must be either profile or policy based however im not sure how since they both receive the same. Can anyone suggest somewhere else for me to look please? Thanks James
  22. Not sure as yet, been so busy lately havent had the time to test it properly. In the half term im going to install the latest sw version on the filter to see if its been solved or not. Our licence is up next year and considering not renewing due to this problem and the youtube for schools not working properly, the main reason we went for it.
  23. Greetings, When making a backup of my gpo's the following errors cropped up regarding the default domain policy (readout below). I havent been seeing any event errors referring to these issues, will it be causing a problem im unaware of?? There are more but had to cut off due to post length. Thanks James GPO: Default Domain Controllers Policy...Succeeded, but note the following issues: [Warning] The security principal [s-1-5-21-158852747-4042112980-3913221358-1006] referenced in extension [security] cannot be resolved, but the task will continue. 24. Greetings, Im replacing an aged app server which hosts over twenty shared resources\applications, a basic lightly used smtp server, a wamp server for a very basic intranet page and a few lightly used databases. I was debating between it all going on a mirrored pair which would be good for reads or a raid 5 set for a kind of a balance between the two. Im intending to stick with hp proliants as is our standard but was debating between a dl360 with mirrored pair for OS and mirrored pair for data, or a DL380 with mirrored pair for os and RAID5 set for data. Please can I have your advice/suggestions/opinions on the best solution Thanks James
  25. Hi Everyone, I recently dual booted win7+win8 as an experiment and decided to remove windows 8 as i never used it. Problem started during windows 7 setup at the disk management screen, i deleted both my win7+win8 partitions and the other system partition win7 creates, however it would not show the free space as one entity, it insted showed them as two. Even after a refresh i still couldnt use them as one. After a clean win7 install, disk management still shows that ex-win8 partition as unpartitioned space. For some reason i cannot expand my win7 partition into it yet my data storage partition will. Any idea where im going wrong? James
