Our school is one of the 1sst phase schools, were worried about our jobs too, this includes science techs, IT techs, caretakers, etc etc... (soft services) there is also a question over wether or not It techs come under soft services, which i beleive has bee ntalked about on here previously. Were due to for a rebuild to start in May 2008 and have completed by September 2008, if that happens it'll be a miracle. It keeps getting pushed futhur and furthur back, a few six months here an few months there. We havent heard anything as far as time scales for transistion are concerned. And considering were a 1st phase school and we havent heard anything you'll be lucky if you hear anything for the next 2 years (offically thats is). Our school has raised the debate over the issue of out sourcing and i know in other LEA's across the country I think newcastle is one, where the IT Techs remained on tact, it was specifially taken out of the proposal. If it is out sourced your contract will have to be transfered, perhaps you'll be made redundant if they have filled all the jobs. Who knows, but under the terms it would seem that your contract will be transfereed to which ever company wins the bid. Wether or not you'll be kept on for a year or so and made redundant then is yet again another isssue, Jumping ship is an option ive been looking at, but do i really want to work for Capita? Just a rant

We've just had a tranining day here at my school. The first three hours was spent been talked to by some representives from the local council, arty farty poeple with odd glasses frames and wacky hair cuts, also representatives from BSF and architects from council. We got told what the kinds wanted, what they didint like about the current school, and how a a new school could look. whoopee! Then.....considering i was sat with the caretaker and site manager..we were aksed to put across our view, not in a mature brain stroming session, or debate. But we were give different situations in the school, outside learning space, outside/inside eating space, social area blah blah blah, and a a3 size peice of mdf. Then the got out the wooden blocks and a whole array of brightly coloured paper, fabric, and sitckly back plastic. I thought i caught a glimpse of Valerie Singleton i may be mistaken. YEs you got it, we had to design in 20mins our particular area!?! whats that all about then....talk about ticking the box oin the right form somwhere for the local government. pathetic. oooh by the way i made a wind farm, supplying electricity to the school and during the night earning the school money supplying the national grid. multicoloured straws, safety pin, and a bit of double sided sticky tape. There werent impressed, the crazy arty women did take a picture of the caretakers keys as she thought the were intresting! yeh i agree! so we still dont know whats going on, maybe it wont even happen, who knows if the school will have a mortage for 25 years, who knows how much it will be? then there was rumour of a partial re-build, a local special school is relocating to us? good luck everyone!

An image search engine, Theres a whole list of innocent words, that can be typed into google to return all kinds of picture results? I mean its the case with web results so why shouldit be different with Images. To be honest shudnt we be relying on teachers to build better lessons rather than go find me a picture of sweeden, and get naughty swedish princesses or similar. I think teacher rely to heavily on the internet as a teching tool!

pcitures for work, search google for legitimate site which relate to somewhere where one miught find the picture. want a picture of monet? search google for monet, we just specifically ban images because of the nature of the images that can be returned. Do you really believe that you have only had to occurances of breaches on google images?

Sounds like some of your restrictions on your RM box are your problem, Although i had two of these scanners which both delevloped this problem, there really good scanners. Is the light coming on as if ready to scan?

certainly is disabled! have you seen some of the images that come up? were lucky here we have a proxy for the pupils and teachers, and our own for admin!

Well i havent really looked into it in all that depth, its just a query. I mean for CMIS say you do some assesment grade in CMIS you can export them to CMIS, try importing them pain the pancreas!

Just a quick thought, ive got some visitors coming into have a look at CMIS and how we extract data for some web based apps we use, and i just wondred wether anyone out there had managed to connect to the cmis database or anything? perhaps construct another application which could query the database? wouldnt it be great if we could extract and enter what data we wanted?

talk to your head teacher or members of SLT, it is likely they will have a contact within the school, like we do. Intresting for us they want us to take outa substantial mortage to buy back the school over a period of 25 years, head teacher not in agreement with this so its been posponed another 6months? just another angle and experience for epople to know whats going on in other parts of the country

I was just wondering if there is a way of knowing which user last logged onto a workstation. I know i can find out when a user last logged and where, but i need the opposite, workstation = user rathert then user = workstation?

I had no idea this was such a wide spread problem. It all boils down to a civil and professional working relationship. My network manager doesnt leave the office ever. Currently he keepos trying to change his job title the head wont allow this, from network manager to IT manager, a completly different job title with a different job description. Of course he follows the job description of a IT manager but fails to realise we dont have anetwork manger for him to mange and impliment his stratergies? This place is like work experience for him, implementing this we dont yet require, have a use for or the expertise in the staff, and being so releuctant to train us or staff in the use of this new technology i can see no other reason. Its just something else to write down on his CV? Maybe ill upload his accompanying letter and comment on how many things he says he does but doesnt, im sure i cud strip the 3 A4 sides down to a paragraph!

oooh just got a new netowkr diagram on the wall! i think hes getting ready for a move to be honest, headteacher is going to speak to him about 2.8. To be responsible for the training and direction of technical assistants in support of the efficient and effective use of the school network. 2.11. Undertake support for all users wishing to further their knowledge and skills on any application or device that may be available on the network. he also hands this over to us also, he wants no part in this!

It seems like a constant struggle to get information out of him. Recently a network boot CD I built and developed to do exactly what we need was given to him by me, he found it really useful and we have now used it for over a year. I ask him to return the source so I can work on another similar project but he pretends he no long has it and that ill have to work it out again for myself. Quick search of his documents presents the source to me in a clearly labelled folder, even with my initials. He has applied for a number of jobs over the last year or more, every time a new job comes up or interview come along he introduces a new system, structure, piece of software to include in his new proposal for a different school. I believe his is using this school as a experiment to further his own career. I actually found a document which he had left at the printer on one of his days off, which was a letter to a school detailing all he had done for the school and how great he was. Makes me sick, it’s like he works single handed. He shares nothing, everything is a big secret and we don’t need to know. He doesn’t manage me or my colleague. Worse than this he actually discusses my role within the department not with me but with other teachers, they obviously report back to me. My other gripe is that teachers and staff constantly tell me how helpful I am, how good I am at my job, constantly asking for me instead of anyone else. This again puts a strain on me and resources; I can only help some many people! Its no longer a joy to work here but a constant struggle. Hang on just gotta answer the phone that has been pushed in my directions “because its for you” Even though he has no idea who it is!

I currently work as an IT technician in a school alongside a netwrok manager and assistant network manager. The network manager is directly responsible for me, and the assistant is there to supervise. Currently the assistant spends more time calling me to fix problems he has no idea of solving. The network manager sees himself as more of a IT manager, than network, choosing to role out software and systems at leisure, with not consultation with colleagues or ourselves. His attitude is that he provides software and that is as far as his support goes. IF a member of staff has problems using a piece of software aslong as it functions and it is the user with the problem he does not see this as his problem. but instead we are left with the backlash of introducing new software and new systems with no consultation. His job descriptions specificallly states that he must provide adequate training and support for technicians in order to maintain efficient and effective support of the network. He takes a lot of time off, and we lack the direction needed to support the network correctly during his absence. When he returns from absence he never wishes to know about problems and lack considerations when allocating work. If he thinks of a job today its done then, regardless of outstanding jobs or problems. ok now im ranting.....im sure there are other it support people out there who have experienced a similar situation. Even the headteacher has spoken to me about the state of the network if the current manager was to leave. IF he left we would be in real trouble, as his setup is completly in his head, although we have diagrams of layout and ips documentation regading setup is lack. Can anyone advice me of a route to take to rectify problesmd of this nature sensitvly?

Ive heard a number of people who use linux for a number of operations, im looking for a linux distro which would help recover data from windows formated drives, also computer forensics. Can anybody recommend a distro or links to sites which can give me furthur advice. Im new to linux!

All 400 of our PC's are left on all day and all night! simply use Run --> CMD --> shutdown /i nice little gui lets you add all the computer names you want to shutdown, and off it goes! restart, shutodwn, logoff and nice little warning box to warn users if by any chance some one is logged on.

we use adobe via MSI, had a bit of trouble getting it wokring though, had to install some of the updates!
