I gave up smoking about 15 years ago too. A few years back I was in a pub for new year with a couple of friends, and at midnight put two hamlet cigars in my mouth and lit them up and was going to pass one to each. They both start crying out at me "noooo you can't!!". It takes me a moment before I realise they're concerned not for my health but getting kicked out for smoking indoors.. I hadn't thought about that one for a while!

My USB DVD drive arrived today, for a laugh I read the manual. "To install the driver for Windows 98 please use the floppy disk" - it didn't come with a floppy disk.

I've never soldered in my life, I suppose I really ought to learn. This will actually go in a rack though, and I have plenty of old CAT5 stuff I can ruin as I go.

Today alone I have bought a DVD drive for home and had to look up the connection settings for a serial console. I'm actually more surprised by the fact I would ever need to read a DVD again outside of work. Good afternoon, I had this idea a while ago and was wondering how feasible it was. I've had to stop a job today for the want of a serial to 3.5mm cable to update the firmware on an AP. If I got a hold of the wiring diagrams, an RJ45 patch panel and a bunch of cables I was thinking of cutting off the ends of various leads and punching down the wires so that on the other side I just use a CAT5 patch cable to connect both sides. I already have a box of DB9 serial cables and some old headphones, why spend £10 on a new cable? I may do CCNA soon, If I had several devices that needed console access and only one COM port on the management PC that might help.. I've never done anything like this before, has anyone got any advice? Should I worry about grounding/shielding, wires too thin to punch down, anything else? Thanks in advance.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. Does anyone get those "Windows Anti Malware Team" calls any more? I haven't had one for ages but I found an easy way to get rid of them was to tell the truth: Caller: There is a problem with your computer. Me: Which one? Caller: You have more than one computer? I think (am not at home to check) on my skylights the bar at the top that you click in to place to lock it shut has a gap behind it with some brush, just like a letterbox. If I close the window but not click the bar all the way shut this leaves some ventilation. Is this what you are doing?

Haven't tried it myself but I'm wondering if you could copy a WinPE environment file to the local disk and boot from that? I used to work for an independent IT shop. Their website boasted all the Windows operating systems they supported. The site never changed from 2005 when I joined through to last year when they finally closed down. They never did get round to adding Windows XP to the list. And you still arrive at the site to be greeted by a "welcome to website, CLICK HERE TO ENTER" button.

Not had that issue but we have had one of our E70s replaced twice for flickering and distorted display problems (VGA only). Does the same happen if cabled with DVI or VGA? This is with our ATI 5450. Our issue only presented if we had both displays at the correct 1920x1080 resolution. A Steljes engineer we had in didn't check this and didn't replicate the problem. We changed ours connections to match yours too, HDMI-E70 mirrored to DVI-TFT. Otherwise we had an issue with screen tearing in videos.

I recently read a copy of The Time Machine that came as a double book along with The Wheels of Chance. I hadn't heard of it but had read War of the Worlds the year before, and with a title like that was looking forward to something I didn't already know the rough plot to. Its about an Englishman on a cycling holiday. My friend loved it when I told him, he said "wow you've been trolled by H. G. Wells". By the way, did anyone else know it should be "20,000 Leagues Around the World While Submerged", not "20,000 Leagues Straight Down from the Surface", I didn't realise until I was almost finished.

Good afternoon, The topic has come up a number of times but with the recent news regarding Smart and Steljes it may become popular again. We are looking at alternatives to Smart Notebook and are hoping to hear from anyone who has actually used other products and can share some feedback. One requirement would be some way to open/import/convert Smart Notebook files. A lot of comments here going back a couple of years suggest various programs "should" or "will" do this and members here "might try it" but I didn't see anything concrete. Did this come to anything for any of you? I also read some years old information about the .iwb file standard that appears to have fizzled out as far as Smart Notebook compatibility goes - An experiment with the common .IWB file format in Smart/Promethean (and Easiteach) I have seen a number of suggestions for Open Sankore. We tried this but decided it wouldn't be accepted by teachers. I just heard about Oktopus today in another thread here. If anyone has any recommendations they would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
