Try server 2008 with terminal services (remote app) I use that to use sims from outside the network. And you don't need to log onto a ts session, you just launch the prog you want. Well worth a look at ..... And quite cheap too.

It's before logon. I'll get a screenshot of the gpo for you tomorrow. Ours is set up so that it will assign vlan info as well so it needs to be able to access the network pre logon to get the right ip address and info.

What type of wireless controllers are you using? We are using a 3com managed system. I have mine set up so that the wireless controllers authenticate radius against IAS and then depending on AD permissions allow the computer onto the network. We also use gpo to push out the wireless config to the laptops. Is this the kind of set up you require? John

I've used vm's in classrooms all be it on local machines but if you install Microsoft steady state on the vm's they will revert back to your original config on reboot! Even if they delete folders in the windows dir. Ps steady state is free

Give us an idea about your it background, things like what you have done etc. And let us know a little about what system hour new job use, for example is it a vanilla Server 2003 environent, viglen classlink, RM cc3/4, ranger etc. Then we can point you inthe right direction John

you could try this lot: Manufacturers of Video Switches, Routers and Extenders. We use smart-e stuff for exactly this one box vga to rj45 into a multiple output transmitter then back to vga at both screens Hope this helps

couple of things you could look at: Event viewer for the RADIUS server looking at the IAS errors to see what info is being passed to the server and see why its being rejected. run this command at the cmd window on the radius server: "netsh ras set tr * en" this will enable Logging, all files will be stored in the following directory,%windir%\tracing. to disable logging use this command "netsh ras set tr * dis", look in the tracing folder for a log called IASSAM this will show you how the requests are being processed. the other thing is, what version of windows server is the Certificate authority? if its 2003 enterprise you can use autoenroll for the certificates. I'm about to buy the canon 450d. Lovely camera. Was going to get the 350d but aparantly the stock 18-55 lens that comes with it is not up to scratch. Although I have been told that the 450d's 18-55 lens is really quite a nice one.

To be honest now we have the forest structure life is so much easier then it was with two totally seperate domains, it was just a nightmare administrating them both.

Well the previous network manager is a close personal friend of the HT and it was his recomendation that there should be 2 domains, and now thats the architecture we have, at least it makes things easier in some respects.

I inherited the 2 domain structure, and was told by the head that, never the 2 domain will meet, as a kind of belt and braces approach to security. So that the kids will never be able to get to the sims server. The forest structure was implemented so that the domain segrigation still occured but there would be a root domain to be able to centeralise the management software, certificate services, IAS and the like. Got to be better than 2 totally seperate domains like we used to have, that made RADIUS authentication across domain shall we say a tad tricky

We decided to go the forest route as we are centeralising all of our 3rd party stuff like antivirus, ghosting, Policy centeral, to the root domain so that the load is removed from the child domains, also with the LEA's introduction of a fortinet box we needed a way to split the network down so that the students and staff got different levels of access, with the forest structure this is easier to do, also it makes VLANS a hell of a lot easier. Secondaly there is a security issue, with completly seperate domains the chance for "hacking" across the network is reduced. Thirdly it makes it easier to enforce different domain security policies Hope this helps

We have just finished implementing a 3 domain forest structure: http://atsmedia.cachefly.net/uploads/ats59689_Capture.JPG Also we have 7 Vlans to segrigate the traffic across the network, with a 3com managed wireless system (undergoing a rebuild this week) a 3com Gigabit core and HP Procurve 2524 and 2650 edge switches. The routing is set up so that staff can get to all the network, students can only get to the students servers, but if a staff member logs onto a student PC then they have access to most of the network, but no access to the SIMS server.

we've just moved from classlink to vanilla 2003 and all I can say is thank god!! Short term niggles getting it set up how you want it but it's so much better in the long run hope this helps. The 3 previous companies i dont know about, as they never turned up or said who they were, but they were working on behalf of Panacea IT. what I will do is take some pictures for you tomorrow so you can see the install I must stress this wasn't Panacea's fault, they were just let down by contractors, but thankfully we have found a great installation company out of it

I had to tell you guys about this company we have in at the moment!!! its a company called Protech Solutions, based in Hertfordshire but they work over the whole of the UK. To explain how good they are I need to tell a little story, We have a new building and we are having 2 projectors installed and a motorised projection screen with a 5.1 surround sound system, sounds pretty normal untill you realise that the screen size is 7 meters wide!!! this is almost cinema sized, oh and also a camera and a digital signage solution!!! Now the original company who priced it up sub contracted the work out, 1st company never turned up, 2nd company ran 15 meters of cable turned up at 3pm and weren't seen again and the 3rd company didn't turn up as well Then Protech turned up, and with a very professional attitude and approach to the job, and have done one of the neatest installations I have ever seen. The fact that this screen also had to be attached to an RSJ through plasterboard and I think you'll understand why I'm so impressed with these guys. Its definatly worth while giving these guys a call, they specialise in structured cabling, wireless lan/bridging, Laser links and electrical installations (and just ask about anything else). I'm looking for a good free broaddcast level viewer. Don't ask for much do I? LOL I think a lot of access points on the network are broaddcasting a lot and slowing the network down and I'd like to be able to see a graph of this, anybody now of any good software? Many thanks Dj

I would create a virtual domain controller and move the roles to that, so that if everything goes wrong at least you have a copy of your AD, then clone the Virtual server and demote the old server, then bring the new one in with the old name, and transfer the roles back to the new one, its a bit long winded but at least during the whole transfer you have a live backup.

would anybody recommend using Microsoft SMS (or SCCM)??? or is this a bad idea???
