I think @AndyCrow would probably agree with me on this, but it seems that you want to use this for a range of purposes, not just one, and that all conversations are likely to be about school business, school interests or in the interest of parents/childrens. Legitimate Interests would be a lawful basis that could cover pretty much all areas, but I would recommend a DPIA / LIA to be completed to ensure you know what personal data will be captured, the exacts purposes that will be cover the use of data, the relevant access controls you will have in place, data retention (including where recordings are kept for a longer period due to incidents / disputes), consultation and showing transparency *including* updating your privacy notice. The exact details of the above are things your DPO will help you with, no doubt. If you need examples of DPIAs to look at (not for this but for other things) have a look at Education Data Matters.

I had been using some VLANs (a little QoS on it) but I'm happy to flatten that now ... no real need since I am on a decent line, and I'm not too worried about internal segregation. I might change my mind on that as the kids grow up so it is something to consider when thinking is this a short or long-term purchase.

The last of my old 3COM kit ... 24 port 10/100/1000 managed switch running 3 VLANs (Wired, Wireless, and Guest Wireless/Peripherals) but that can go now. It is not being heavily pushed but the constant fan drone interferes with any audio recording I do, and also is annoying background noise in phone calls. Thanks to everyone for the pointers so far ... I'll see what I can pick up after next pay day!

I’m starting to rebuild my office at home and need to do a bit of noise reduction. Whilst I have some decent networking kit it is a tad noisy and not that energy efficient. Looking for recommendations on options for reasonably priced, fanless, gigabit switches (minimum 8 port) to replace the present behemoth I have.

There have been Watch adaptations before, on radio and plays. Due to time for production liberties get taken and the director/producer does the best they can with the people they have but they do play fast and lose some times. There are few things that I feel need to have the exact reproduction ... it will be hard for anyone to picture what my head cooked up when I read each book. There are times when my vision or idea has changed over time due to conversations with other fans. Whether you are a Pete Postlethwaite / Clint Eastwood fan for Vimes, I can’t get Philip Jackson’s voice out my head for him now ... Adaptations I didn’t like? I did get upset about all those elves at Helm’s Deep though. Very upset!

Compliance management is about helping you bring structure to what you do, help you change the culture in your organisation and help you record any evidence you need. It is not about having stuff You can dredge up if something goes wrong ... it is about reducing the chances of things going wrong in the first place.

I'm fine with it ... it is almost an 'alternative' line ... rather than pre-judging it with what I think it will be like, I'll let it run.

The use of online communities is a fairly well-established method of gaining CPD nowadays. You will hear of people talking about their PLN (personal learning network) or PLCs (professional learning communities) and include other aspects of social media/social networking in there too. Looking for established good and best practice is part of what all staff in schools need to do. Any avenues you have for access to peer-support should also be explored, but there is a balance. This is a community and you have to be mindful of the signal to noise ratio. Contributing to a community can be done in a variety of ways, from being a subject matter expert to the class clown, the critical friend to the early adopter ... but you have to be careful that there is a balance. This is a community for IT Professionals. IT is work-related but has opportunities for the non-work aspects of communities too ... but first and foremost it is a professional community. Drawing on the wealth of knowledge and experience of its members, it provides real-time access to best practice, critical friends, peer support and peer review. If an inspector raises something during an inspection which is based on their own ideas rather than any guidance, it is open for challenge and should be challenged. They refuse to officially look at anything related to data protection or privacy, but will look at Safeguarding (IT IS ALL LINKED TOGETHER!!!!!)

It has to be on a case-by-case basis. sometimes the choice is down to the school. I've seen people say you should *never* include the names of others involved who were working in a professional capacity (there is a court ruling showing that you can categorise instead ... e.g. HR1, SLT1, SLT2, etc.) but there are times when that is plain stupid as we *know* it is obvious who was involved and an FOI request will provide details of who fulfils those roles.

They can. ICO have started fining schools ... admittedly just for failure to pay the registration fee, but they are asking questions of schools and trusts now. I'm not saying that to scare-monger ... I'm saying that to show that sticking their heads in the sand is not an option any more.

Use of their personal email accounts can work for Governors ... but there are risks. This is why things like GovernorHub can work instead. A low risk approach is to have named accounts, segregation from the general staff and students, a variation on the starters/leavers to ensure the relevant close down of accounts and even consider restricting where those can accounts can send/receive emails from. Shared mailboxes for generic accounts for chair@ etc. can be useful, but you need to remember that these could be used by a whistleblower and so you do need to be careful on confidentiality as to who access things. If there is specific guidance then review, translate and implement. If you can post a link to that guidance it would be appreciated by many.

No, the Data Controller and legal entity is the school. They are the public authority and have to pay the relevant fee. The LA has no legal responsibility for how the school as Data Controller does things. It has always been that way.
