Sounds like you'll like OpenBSD. Problem with you're idea is, well lets say you have a 486, you can't get 486 anymore its under powered, costs too much to make, now you can only get a dual core 64bit processor. Good luck rewriting your software for that.

If only it was that simple. First you have this thing called hardware, this is currently evolving which means the OS has to add code to deal with the new hardware. You then have this thing called the "internet" which allows computers to talk to each other across the world, unfortunately not everyone is nice on this "internet" thing and you have these group of people called "hackers" who want to break you're bug free problem by trying to make you're program do things that it wasn't suppose to do. Now at this stage things are rather complex so we need to deal with multiple teams and each part has a stack, so things lower on the stack will require the things further up the stack to update. Now again, we're humans and we are busy, so the stack might have to deal with folks not updating their bit (shocking I know), which means we might end up needing to support multiple versions of our code which makes it harder to keep bug free.

I went to Apple after giving up with Windows Phone. It's basically a granddad phone. Good build quality that just works, don't get me wrong, its overpriced, but my 2 yr old phone is still worth over £200 so its not too bad. Don't Nokia now make android phones?

Indeed, that debate is over, long live SIMS 8 and we'll be retired by the time those pesky kids turn up, if any of them sneak in, that's fine, Capita offer a 90min intro course for only £150. I can't image it'll save any money - I mean you're just paying Capita to run SIMS on their hardware. So it'll be current £££ licensing fee + ££ hosting fee (which is actual Infrastructure + Capita markup)

@djm968 I think you are missing the point. You know those children that don't have access to SIMS, they are the next generation, they will become staff and they won't know why a save button icon is a floppy or what a floppy is. You're staff won't work forever, new staff will come in and they won't know SIMS. Training needs to happen regardless what MIS you pick. Hosted and Cloud aren't the same thing. To staff, hosted and self-hosted should make no difference (in theory), other then self-hosted \ on-prem you can walk into a room and see some noisy box with lots of blinking lights. Hosted you COULD walk into server room somewhere a point at a box go, that's where my stuff is running, cloud, you really have no idea. Even if you go into all of their data centers, you could use any number of servers over the course of a normal day. You might use one, you might use thousands. Serverless architecture, one of the key benefits of the cloud means every execute you run, runs on a new "server" and has a live time of a few milliseconds before it is destroyed. Ultimately for the end-user, what does it mean? It means no more stupid outages for upgrades\patches\maintenance, no more sorry it's running slow. It should get more or get bigger automatically. If you're school has on-prem and you're happy with stuff, great your IT team are doing amazing. If they are struggling, well you've got options. I won't even get into the whole school staff struggle to learn something new, other then suggesting we might know some good educators that could help learn

There will always be training requirements, it's IT, things change. If they don't, you'll get left behind. Take the save button, it's icon is a floppy.
