Why oh why has one computer on the whole domain decided to stop ruuning my printer script??? It has worked recently. I have checked all the usual stuff, DNS, server connection, taken it off the domain and back on. All the other GPs work ie, redirection of doc folder, restrictions etc. But even when I copy the printer script (which simply adds a printer depending on machine name) to the desktop of the local PC and run it, it doesn't work. There are no error messages thrown up. It's a mystery. I did wonder whether it's permissions, but I have tried to run the script when logged on as administrator. Has anyone got any ideas?

Ric, which manual? I can't find any instructions in the pdfs that I downloaded from the PMP site. Which part of the registry do I edit and do I have to do this for every pc?

I am testing print manager plus academic and they have provided a silent install of a cleint app entitled 'PMP_EUIT_Silent.EXE'. They say that you need to use SMS or a third party utility to 'push' the install around the client computers. I don't have SMS (I don't think it's free is it?) or a third party installer. Can I use Software installation in GP for rhis or does it have to be an msi package? Or can I run a script at startup to install the app? Thanks

Ok, so if both of my servers are domain controllers on seperate physical networks and I want to keep the two domains but have admin as forest root domain, and curriculum as second domain with a trust relationship, what is the step by step process? Can anyone point me to some documentation to do this or even record the steps here for me? Thanks in advance!

I find it an offense that Microsoft say windows server can be used as a print server and yet there is not even a sniff of being able to set print quotas? This is BASIC stuff people. come on.... I hate to say this but in my last school, they were Apple based (I can already hear you all shreek) but I have to say it, Apple had it down to a tee with their server software. We are talking about software that was written for education. Mac Manager was a simple but powerful version of Microsoft's GPs, and then their was classroom assistant (I think this is what it was called) You could control, share, view, lock screens, install programs centrally, view system files, announce with audio, basically anything you would want to do ever! Imagine how much software for a windows network would cost to perform all of that. But you got it all FREE when you bought an Apple server. Microsoft have yet to look at the requirements of education and come up with a suitable solution.

My only real dealings with RM in the past was at my last school where the head was convinced by RM that their software called Successmaker would provide an e-learning system which was intellegent ie. it would quickly assess a pupil's ability and react accordingly and it would give teachers a full report on individual progress. It did all this but it wasn't the most stable system and it cost $$$$$$$$. Oround £20k initially with an anuual subscription cost as well. Personally, I don't think it was worth it, although it kept the kids happy and the teachers didn't have to make any lesson plans. BTW, if you have ordered stuff from Tesco vouchers, then you have ordered that stuf from RM. So RM are probably ripping off Tesco and schools as well in their ability to provide good value for vouchers.

Ah, so you can allow teachers on Admin to see shares or other things on curriculum, but stop curriculum from seeing anything on admin. Got it.

Thanks for all of your inputs. I can't see what the advantage of having two domains running in the same forest over just the single domain. (Taking into account I've never done this.) If a trust is setup between the two domains, then either is accessible anyway. Why not just have the one?

Geoff, are you on CLEO? We are on CLEO and so that might explain a few things. Perhaps I should ask our CLEO representative for CUMBRIA if there is a particular NTP server we should be using?

Hi, I have followed the following microsoft article to get the server (windows 2003) to take the time from an NTP server (I've set it to use time.windows.com) and distribute it across the network (mix of 2000 and XP clients). The computers are definately synchronizing but the time on both clients and server is always 6 minutes too fast. Is there a way to offset the time or shoulk I try a different NTP server? Thanks

One way to make staff security conscious is to tell them that if they leave themselves logged on, pupils will have access to all their personal details including bank A/C numbers! Of course, I wouldn't let this happen but teachers don't have to know that! It's only when it affects them personally that they MIGHT do something about it. At the end of the day, if SMT say they want it, I'll have to deliver. So here's another question: If my curriculum server is a domain controller and my admin server is a domain controller and they are running differently named domains, how do I bring the admin one onto the same domain as the curriculum one?

Ok, the killer question: SHOULD WE KEEP OUR ADMIN AND CURRICULUM NETWORKS SEPERATE? This seems to have been a policy kept in place at most schools I've come across. But we have a new assistant head who is talking about merging the whole lot. We're not talking just about joining the physical network here. We're talking about putting Admin and curriculum servers all on the same domain. The only thing then seperating the two is the security and GP settings for staff and pupils. I have heard all sorts of rumours that lots of other schools are merging their networks together. I've even heard that some LEAs are insisting on it. I can see where their argument is, that in the end schools are needing to have access to both networks from every room. ie. they need to have access to admin to register lessons, and they need to have access to curriculum for subject based work etc etc. To run two seperate netorks to every room doubles the time, energy and cost involved because let's face it, not many schools are organized enough to pull the cables all at the same time. So I am asking for your thoughts on this. Have you merged your networks? Do you feel safe to do so? Can you trust staff to be security conscious in the classroom? Thanks

So I've just recieved my Dell NAS server with Windows storage server 2003 on it I now need to copy the files on the older server across to the NAS. Both servers are in the same domain of course. How do I make sure that all those files and folders keep their permissions? The microsoft site says use Xcopy. Surely there must be a better way than having to go to the Command prompt? Any other options would be usefull!

Have you heard of Contribute by Macromedia? I have seen it working. To edit a website, all a user needs to do is type in the url, and if they have permission to change something, it's a simple case of replacing old with new. http://www.macromedia.com/software/contribute/?promoid=BINP Worth a look although I do think the webpage hsa to be created with Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver BTW does PHP and all that.
