In the settings app, search for "activation" it will tell you how the machine is activated. As for SSD's, pretty much any brand name you recognise and trust should be fine!

The last Dell laptop I used had quite a comprehensive diagnostics utility built in to the BIOS. If the issue appears linked to the power supply it may be worth running the diagnostics to see if it's not pulling enough power from the supply? Also, get one of the seemingly fine laptops and test it with the same power supply for good measure.

Personally, I would try Puppy but it's not used much. Lubuntu will probably be a little slower but better supported.
