Whatever you do DON't use Console8/Pet-XI/IC3 Spark stuff. Google them and you'll find out why. Their software is utter crap, shoddy and hardly works. Costs a hell of a lot of £££'s and requires YOU to host their software!

I've got an i5-3210M in my laptop. Laptop is over 6x years old, still runs fine (touch wood) Everytime I've looked at newer ones for the money I can't find a decent power-£ ratio and the newer i5's look far weaker by comparison. The older CPUs have the raw power the newer ones don't seem to get near.

I get the same here on some machines - but we're on W10 1709 and don't use Impero.

We used them once for a bunch of Fujitsu laptops. When we had problems with them, they didn't want to know about it. Left a very bad taste for me.

Hi, We have several of these devices - Dell Latitude 3189 - where the in-built keyboards don't seem to work at first startup. I was wondering if anyone else is getting the same problem. The in-built keyboards don't work in Windows. They don't work in the BIOS either. If they do you get as far as pressing F2/12 for BIOS/boot menu and that's it. Even the CAP lock light doesn't work. Being unable to run the Dell Diagnostics either due to this. If you connect an external USB keyboard, that works as normal but the problem there is the Diagnostics then report the keyboard is working fine. I seem to have a lot of them when the keyboard doesn't work, so IMHO that's a hardware fault. E.g. I've currently got 8x of them sitting here on the desk and 4x of them have this problem. To that end I've had a Dell engineer out to replace the keyboards on some of them (they are all still under warranty). However some do seem to be intermittent. It seems a bit hard to believe that these are hardware faults given the number of devices, but maybe we've has a bad batch of them delivered. After a second opinion from people, unless I'm missing something daft.

We've had some in the past where we suspected the loose-hanging SSD bracket may have shorted out some units. It just made me a bit more weary. My own office PC didn't have a case on for over 6x months, so mine I'm not so worried about

What supplier are you using for those? I use the Kingston SSD brackets as I've found they seem to fit every case I've worked on so far. That's the saying "If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right" Personally I'd sooner make sure they fit and are mounted properly so it doesn't cause my any problems down the road. But everyone's different. It might save me a few quid upfront but cause problems later on.

Reuse the existing cables. Only on very old PCs is the SATA spec likely to be SATA1. Only thing that concerns me there is static from the velcro. I have used double-sided tape which has fallen off and left the drive just hanging inside the case. I'm not keen on that.

THIS seems to be the problem with IT in schools. You seem to either: * be a member of a big MAT with a big IT team * a tech with Network manager * a tech who has RM support * or simply by yourself. I've found though that means: * No-one to bounce ideas off * No-one to double-check anything * No second opinons etc. Then again, I've worked with some people who are that useless or unfriendly you might as well work by yourself!

Isn't this more of a task for a data manager than IT support?

Is that any help? There does seem to be a lot of confusion regarding docker and Xibo etc. To be fair, it doesn't exactly seem straightforward to get setup.

Update on this is that Xibo now uses Docker as part of the installation, which does seem to complicate matters somewhat.

Id be interested to see how people deal with this as well. Dymo labels - pulled off Asset stickers - rubs off, peeled off by kids. Sharpie - rubs off eventually. Labels - Tried on laptops and kids peeled them off with the expected "it's always been like that" even when they were only put on a week before - by myself - so I know it's NOT "always been like that" you little (insert $teacher or $student) where applicable

Makes me chuckle how they find it difficult but expect us to be able to use the same software, to expert-level with a click of your fingers with no training Each of us has their own passions and interests in what we're interested in tech-wise outside of the job - some IT people love web design, some don't. Anyhow - we used to use Serif WebPlus as we had the whole package of software. But even then there were some features e.g. scrolling JAVA banners If I remember right that didn't work and was due to it being unsupported in that version - nothing I could do about it. After that they started to use things like wix.com. There was another one but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

Good point here - what devices will be used to read the QR codes? Anything URL-based/Internet-based will need a Wifi or 3G connection.

Maybe some kind of CSV export/import? How are you going to be deploying the app to the iPads if you do purchase one?

To clarify the example I meant was when Windows 7 came out and Bitlocker wasn't available in Professional, only in Ultimate and Enterprise - that kind of thinking I could understand. Some kind of feature reservation thing. It just seems a lot of Windows 10 features are being nerfed.

That's what annoys me about the versioning of Windows 10. Some features e.g. like Bitlocker being only in certain versions I'd understand. What small business is going to have Enterprise licencing instead of Professional? We've had problems with GPOs with Pro v Enterprise version of Windows 7 in the past playing up.

The one at back that's low down to the ground is sort of what I'm after. There's solutions to have it moved in and out e.g. on a tripod, tripod dolly, bracket etc. In schools teachers don't need an excuse NOT to do something, so I want the solution to encompass the fact they can move it in and out themselves as part of their assembly duties. Moving a monitor in and out when you're the sole tech in a school can be easily done by one of the teaching staff who are doing the assembly.

Have you got the link at all though? Any ideas at this stage are welcome We don't have the tools or tech staff onsite to be ale to modify anything very easily unfortunately. As it's a school I need to consider the Health and Safety aspects of custom kit if it's been made in-house too. Have you got any examples of the ones you've used at all? I came across one company that would create a custom case for the TV, but we'd have to buy a TV and send it to them to fit the case. At this stage I want to see if I can reuse existing kit, or purchase a larger monitor screen if needed. For the time being buying a TV for this option, wouldn't be an option really due to budget. I was looking for some off the shelf kind of kit, but it does seem more of a challenge than I originally thought.
