Seriously though dude, there's no shame in saying you don't know how to fix something and seeking support from the vendor who likely knows the software inside and out e.g. SIMS in this case. I myself have rang our SIMs support team no end of times and likely asked them the same things more than once - so what? That's what they're paid for (quite well I believe). I am by myself and don't have time to troubleshoot issues they could resolve far quicker than me due to their knowledge of the system - again, so what - it's what they're paid for. It means I can get on with something else. Those days of knowing every bit of software inside and out have long gone dude, be it from virtualisation to application/MIS platforms. I can bet you there's no one person who completely understands Azure/AWS services.

Full respect to AV, it's a fascinating world but I'm an amateur at this stuff but been expected to do that AND my own IT job before. Each to their own but things like projector throw distance, delay, reverb, getting the best out of microphones, speakers, dealing with different types of microphones etc doesn't come under IT in my book. Never has done, never will.

Going from using cheap VGA splitters to seeing proper but expensive kit like Creston/Extron scalers, there's no contest. This is why I leave it to the AV pros and why IMHO AV is and should be a separate filed to IT support. The skillsets may look similar, but they are very different.

Interesting..... How are you measuring the light loss between the fibre joints?

Are you using a fusion splicer are you using? Except with the pros and their kit, fibre splicing is still damm expensive I thought

Could be a few different things e.g. Permissions on the server? VLANs? Can you ping or trace route to the SIMs server? Who supports the network? Just yourself? After a few weeks of no support from SIMs I'd get that escalated and complain about the lack of support.

Once the madness of the last week of summer hols and first few weeks are over - might be able to help there. I'll have a look in out stores. Likely to be single-power leads though?

Is this for digital signage systems? Put a lock screen/display GPO setting for never lock/timeout and physically remove any keyboards/mice etc? Should cover it. My previous place before I left I was looking at tweaks for our digital signage systems. I was trying to schedule some power savings/shutdown/wake from sleep etc and got it working on one using a combo of the above. It awoke from sleep, straight into the signage, updated itself and there was no need to lock/unlock the screen with the user account we'd setup.

As per many other and probably more experienced/knowledgeable posters have already put.... Managed Layer 3 at the core, with aggregation switch/function Managed Layer 2, 24-48 ports PoE switches 2 at the edges, full 1Gbps ports, 10Gb SFPs/fibre if possible back to the core switch(s). I'd ideally put a rack-mounted UPS in each edge cab too, but that's simply too much money.

Waste of time, resources and licence fee money. Given the recent furore with the BBC about the TV licence being scrapped for over-75s and pay rises for certain celeb staff within the same space of time. I'd say they need to refocus their efforts and not on stupid things like this either. Otherwise it's going to be very very hard for them to keep justifying the TV licence.

Ours is all on the same network pretty much. We don't have a curriculum v admin network which I understand used to be the case with RM stuff. What is the network setup like? A Vanilla network? We've got Windows 10 Education and on the few we've rolled out for teachers, we don't have any issues with deploying SIMs from SOLUS3. It installs fine and I've had none reported to me. Have you done an upgrade or a fresh install of W10? Do you have SIMs support?

From pauper to prince in terms of resources and budgets? Interesting the difference between levels of education. What's wrong with the current system? How old is it? / When was it installed? Who installed it? Who services it / does it get serviced?

We use SIMS as did my last school. I know how to support it, fix it etc but not how to use the app itself - never had any training on it. We've got a support company for SIMs who are pretty good and know their stuff. SOLUS3 is good from my experience of using it. The upgrade failure thing is a bit wierd as another poster, put because the machines are offline the upgrade has "failed". Could be 1x machine out of 100 that's just been unplugged. I tend to check them by rooms/blocks as it's easier for me to manage and check.

Not versions I bothered with, too reduced in functionality e.g. remember Windows 7 starter - you couldn't even change the desktop wallpaper? As an earlier poster put, no need to diversify so much with the versions, but M$ haven't learnt their lesson.

With Windows 7 it used to be a case of basically: Home - Unable to join to a domain, not all advanced features of Pro and limited to RAM Pro - The best option Enterprise - Whatever options supposedly came with it. I've seen GPOs not work with Pro but worked with Enterprise. What was wrong with that? Simple, easy to manage, surely easier for Microsoft to maintain and update? Who knows?

Of week 3? How much e-waste do you have? I think 2x collections was ours. Although to be fair we did a collection pretty much every holiday period anyway. We just didn't have the room to store stuff.

What about projector bulbs, used ink and toners ? Do they collect them?

I don't quite understand ALL of the hate towards RM. They're not perfect by any means but some large teams I've worked with have done a far worse job. I've heard of one school pulling out of RM support, getting in an MSP and then going BACK to RM as the MSP let them down big-time. I used shutdown /i other times but not for scheduling etc. What was your reason for leaving Impero out of interest? We found it was great at first and became worse as the years went by.

This is one of the great things I've come to like about the CC4 console. This makes this task so much easier. Vanilla Network - Used Impero, various WoL tools. All very hit and miss. Very spotty and ultimately unreliable, we never got it to work properly. RM CC4 Network - CC4 console, has yet to fail me yet. Only when the machine was switched off at the socket or some little darling had unplugged the network cable, or the WoL settings not set on the device - has it failed to work. I'd only experienced the WoL stuff really working as it should in the CC4 network.

That's my logic too. No fancy naming conventions expect incremental, nothing to manage expect that. When I audit the rooms I'd expect the computers to be in the same place with the same names, otherwise it's an unauthorised change to the systems. Makes it easier for staff to report faults and do seating charts etc.
