  1. Is that desktop or desk replacement
  2. Eh... this can't be right or Linux secuiryt wouldn't be worth spit anywhere outside a server room. Could you imagine having a classroom of Linux boxes and student readers of eduGeek. Nightmare!!!!
  3. Mentoring the young is a worthy aim but as school employees we have responsibilites that they don't have. There might be ways to deal with health and safety but DPA is another matter. How would staff, other students and their parents feel about certain gifted students potentially having access to the MIS, email and the file server where all the reports, references and exclusion paperwork are kept?
  4. Am I seeing things two threads witht the same name? Anyway on a serious point, the forum should probably be renamed 'Linux,BSD, and UNIX-like. *nix is shorthand used by the cognoscenti but people starting out may be less aware. :
  5. What would the weekend be without another gratuitous link to youTube. This week Star Trek gets the MTV Cribs treatement. It looks like Mr. Spock hasn't quite recovered from his Mind Meld with 50 Cent. om/watch?v=eBXal1GAA4A&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwiki%2Etechrepublic%2Ecom%2Ftwiki%2Fbin%2Fview%2FGeekend%2FStarTrek after a quick tour inside the house it's time to go pool-side. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-N6Cwhoh_s&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwiki%2Etechrepublic%2Ecom%2Ftwiki%2Fbin%2Fview%2FGeekend%2FStarTrek
  6. After all the helpful 101s on a cracking a windows box, I am glad to say that it was Linux root logon that I misplaced. I suppose data will always be vulnerbale on an unencrypted file system but hopefully *nix makes it a bit harder. In the end I just took a deep breath and just did rebuild of the system partition. It was interesting to see the line "Installing Foomatic -filters". Probably nothing but sounds impressive. "Scotty, are the Foomatic filters insalled? OK warp 9 Mr Sulu, engage"
  7. It was just a matter of time before the kids found out where the technical staff hang out. Here's a frightening quote from the KS3 SATS forum:
  8. LMAO Understatement of the year m8!!!
  9. This is what Dell thinks a desktop replacement notebook should be like. It's like a throwback to the early laptops which were the size of suitcases and could only be supported by the laps of an Olympic weightlifter. Full review at Techrepublic. http://techrepublic.com.com/5254-6257-0.html?forumID=99&threadID=180385&messageID=2030253&id=598322&tag=nl.e019
  10. After congratulating myself on a sucessful OS rebuild, i have just discovered that my admin password is perhaps a little too strong for my muppet brain to recollect :banghead: I'll be alright so long as I don't want to install software or burn CDs
  11. Hmmm The company is a bit anonymous for an organisation wanting people to trust it with their money.
  12. Don't worry Joe. You're inside on lovely summer's day, posting on IT an fourm . That's geek enough
  13. @IndieGirl Gender issues aside, how did you go from an English stundent to IT geek. Was it always something in the background?
  14. @grumbledook I wanted to believe your unusually detailed knowledge of ironing was really due to your stint in The Army.
  15. Yeahs, I suppose but PayPal isn't quite a truseted brand these days.
  16. Just curious as to why female members of this and other sites are eager to identify themseleves as such. The received wisdom was that the anonimity of the Internet was meant to allow greater participation as appearances wouldn't matter. I suppose the counter argument would be that by reminding the boys that there is a female presence they're more likely to remember to behave themselves Hey it's Sunday afternoon and things on eduGHeek have just been too placid of late.
  17. Yeah. You have point there. To do group selection in monOlithic script you'd have t o use ADSI, KiXtart or string splitting in VBS.
  18. This vidoe clip will appeal more to Star Wars Fans. (You don't like SCI-FI? Leave now! Drop your keyboard off at reception. Loose 1000 Geek Points.) It is shorlty after the end of Episode IV. Darth Vader is drifting in space after Junior has just blown up the Death Star. It is time to make the call we all dread to make, giving bad bad news to a line manager. The scene opens withs Emperor Palpatine kicking back with a few a friends/sycophants, telling them of his encounter with Yoda in the Senate... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO9zwhersfk&search=robot%20chicken
  19. gives you Peter Crouch: footballer, robot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJctQQVxqFg&search=peter%20crouch ... sex machine? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aof4T_KKq1M&search=peter%20crouch
  20. Just wondering if anyone has setup a web shop to take payments for school trips and such. Maybe the whole mixture of parents, money and internet security is just too much of a can worms to be worthwhile. The payments comapny would also charge commision. But could this be offset by the cash hadnling fees at the bank and time spent by teachers and/or stupport staff taking payments.
  21. How about this: Attach the user motd to the relvant user init GPO or Attach the computer script to a loopack GPO for the OU which groups together the computers in a PC suite.
  22. This a follow up to my earlier thread on using Active Directory as a directory/phonebook. I wonder wheter it will be worthwhile to allow the school \admin staff to populate all the phone number fields in a user record. Of course this would involve a custom MSC console and OU delegation maybe. Then again it maybe possible to do this using GAL editing in Outlook. Should they be allowed to change group memebrships for departments etc.too as noone seems to want to give me uptodate information
  23. The holidays seem like a good time to reduce the number of backups but one or two of the admin staff keep popping in. The day I don't backup will be the day they loose something.
  24. Ok being serious now what about a digest of some of the more active or interesting threads. That's how other sites pad out there newletters This may also be aprtial solution to the front page scroll-out problem.. Other items could include a Gardner's calender for ICT Techs/NMs. Right now people who should have got their budgets and be ordering new stuff. We are also in the middle of exam season. It will be the end of year in about 6-8 weeks. Updates for MIS like the June release for SIMS.net A lot of this might of appeared in the threads already hence the digest suggestion.
  25. How about "The way to Amarillo". That's always a crowd pleaser
