If I didnt find file servers I would look at the DC's because people still use them as file servers If standardised you can easily work down sturcture but when I had stretford-03 I hadnt a clue what it did (Though there should always be documentation but 75% of my jobs there hasnt been, even admin passwords!) I found out stretford-04 did absolutly nothing!

Yep all virtualised Alot easier to seperate than restoring domain services and file shares. Enterprise gives you 4 VM for one physical so worth it as RAM is cheap

if one server called sgs-sql-001 then it should narrow down to one guess where sql is

I would be mostly there by guessing file-001 to file-004 have files on them so narrows down to 4 servers then I would go into server manager -> file services -> share management and if keeping with constant names would be year11$ or intakeYEAR$

Even if I didnt leave any documentation you would just go into dns and guess that sgs-file-002 is a file server and sgs-dc-002 is a domain controller, not to hard but when I started this job I have stretford-01, 02, 03, 04, 05 what do all those have on them?

Why couldnt hank be the sql box? (biggest box I have) or the big file server?

Well its like programming variables I always ddi it to standard like intTeacherNumber I've read code that has random variable referencing, which isnt fun the next person! If you started at my place you always know that sgs- for every server (Stretford Grammar School) then role (dc, sp, file, sql) then all end in 001 unless more like file-002 etc.. I would hate to go into a enterprise and have random names

I have sgs-man-001 for management stuff like xen, av etc.. You cant 100% get everything but I had no documentation when I started so would have helped abit! Plus when I want to access exchange under panic its simple sgs-exch-001 not having to think if its humpty or numpty!

I would hate names like that!! I go by my old managers way: sgs-dc-001 sgs-file-004 sgs-sql-001 etc... Used to be before I came stretford-01 , 02, 03 this gives a new person no clue what is what

Only reference on laptop is w84t, there is a small reference on google staying noisy fan and poor keyboard but nothing else

Well I ve been polite and had them 'fixed' but stone dont know what the problems are or even what the beeps mean, these are 'new' laptops and staff and myself get tired of sending them back and same issue keeps cropping up so they re not getting fixed making staff angry.

we have 20 x asus ul30 and been fine and similar build though the components of the stones seem to be right at the front, which to me seems a design flaw. Stone have been a great company for me especially on PC's but having to give staff old crap laptops back while I have a load of these laptops in my office gathering dust for 4 months makes me look stupid! especially when happened to one member of staff 4 times! I dont know about my legal options really as given up

I just want things resolved! I brought 5 in July 2010 and 4 screwed up and was an idiot and brought 20 in summer as wanted half stone and half asus and 5/6 died of those! so dont know what to do with them and neither do stone! when ususally they re good with stuff but said I m only school reporting problems :/
