This is an annoyance with some apps that don't use standard file browsing dialogs but as long as file permissions are set correctly it isn't a major security issue. They can see files but if ACL are set correctly they won't be able to modify.

You can use dcquery to find machines which haven't been used for a while. On the DC in a command prompt: dcquery computer -inactive 3 This will locate machines which haven't been logged onto for 3 weeks. If you're looking more at the level of use over a period of time you may want to add something to a script to log the current time at logon/logoff. A batch script dropping info to text files would probably be the quickest way of doing this though I beleive Kixx has some easy ways of quickly dropping info like this into SQL DBs.

The free choice/established standards debate is like usability/security. It's a balancing act. You need freedom to choose a solution that is appropriate and standardisation to implement it efficiently. I think an important point though is that you should avoid making a choice today which drastically limits the options or choices available to you tomorrow. This is why on a technical level open standards are a good idea. You can choose one system/file format etc. and if you change your mind further down the line, you aren't locked into it. In the same way BSF involves being locked into a long term contract which is likely to limit future choices.

What does the Sophos service log on as? (Check the log on tab in the service properties) Bit of a guess but if it was trying to use a domain account, this may fail when not connected to the network.

Did this a few years ago for a-level computing students who wanted to play with php and mysql. Just used an ubuntu LAMP setup and allowed the student one db each on the box. I used phpmyadmin to admin the db's and kept a close eye on things as it was a new setup (and the sixth formers liked to 'test' things thoroughly). It was actually easier to administer than the previous sixth form setup - using VB6 which frequently had issues running as a locked down user. Since everything ran on a single box which was not part of the domain it was quite easy to ensure it was kept secure and seperated from the other elements of the network.

I've got a G1 - really pleased with it. I've had a lot of Windows Mobile and a couple of Blackberries before now and always been disappointed with them. I'm always looking for a phone that will do as much as possible and HTC do some great phones features wise but the Windows Mobile OS always lets them down, sluggish performance for no apparent reason, IE mobile is crap. Even simple elements such as the cameras produce really poor results. Android is a really snappy OS, the built in browser is the best I've used on a mobile device. Downloads seem much faster than on comparable Win Mobile devices, the interface is generally well thought out and can be controlled with a finger rather than requiring a stylus and the Android market makes it really easy to find add apps. There are some cons, the battery life rarely makes more than a day and Android doesn't yet support A2DP. The G1 is a bit on the large side but this tends to be the case with any smartphone and IMHO the build quality is better than a lot of reviews made out. The built in GPS is really fast at aquiring your location but you can't currently use it for turn-by-turn navigation as you could with Win Mobile and tom tom. I'd describe as a typical Google project ie, they have released it whilst still in beta and there's still a few rough edges. Still a great phone for the geeks though.
