I know Edugeek uses AWS for its sites/associated services and this thread is also addressed to anyone who uses AWS. How do you prevent/mitigate against the possibility of getting a huge bill for bandwidth say something went rogue and started either pushing out traffic or someone constantly downloading from your services? Its the one thing that has put me off AWS/IAAS given that I've had the latter of the above examples happen previously, thankfully I was with a supplier which had unmetered egress.

When you set the path to the Chrome MSI, did you use a full UNC path: \\svr-01\msi\googlechrome\chrome.msi I usually give everyone read permissions on the MSI aswell to avoid any permissions errors.

I had hell of a time trying to get it to work. Just to check you must have the following in your proxy exceptions list (if you use a proxy that is): 127.0.0.1 localhost Otherwise it won't connect. Additionally, I found the software didn't install nicely on machines, so I ended up installing it on my machine and getting it working nicely, then Robocopying the software out to the clients.

Well it's a very dirty solution, but I've seen another school allow Youtube and then in the student GPO's, added *.youtube.com and all related youtube URL to the proxy exception list so it never hits the internet. However, as soon as you have BYOD, it fails. Realistically though, you need to investigate what your ISP can offer and the alternatives on the market as I know SafetyNet is very basic.

I was equally skeptical about the use of iPads. From listening to other schools around me at the time, it was chaos with kids smashing them up, losing them and generally just awful. There was no management of the iPads and they were skattered everywhere. Here however, it seems to be working really well. We have found that if we hold all the iPads as a central resource in our office with teachers then coming and booking them out, it works well. Teachers seem to take more care if x10 iPads are signed out under their name with Little Timmy not being allowed to run around the classroom balancing an iPad on his head (seen it before in another school). We've had one breakage in the last 18 months which was in fact a teacher with butter fingers. Kids love them, staff love them and as a whole, they're pretty easy to manage with Apple Configurator but depends entirely on the school's situation/circumstances.
