  1. Have you tried copying the license and configuration files from the manual install back to the deployment folder (replacing the current versions) and seeing if that helps deployment Otherwise I think it's time to contact NSS
  2. Just checked my set up v10.5 is the latest version. The security key is an optional setting set in the general tab in the configuration menu - we don't set it. If yo have set the connectivity to host name I would still check that the IP address shown in the net support properties is correct (check against DNS). Have you tried a manual install one one of the workstations? In your position I would be tempted to start from scratch.
  3. Check if the computers are set to connect by IP address or Hostname. if you use DHCP and the IP address for the computer changes you loose the connection
  4. We have a number of Kyocera printers and we have always found it easier to contact them direct when we have any problems. A couple of weeks ago one of our year old FS2020s started making horrible noises. After a look we decided it was beyond us so, a call to Kyocera. 2 days later printer exchange complete - no questions, no quibble, just new printer sent out and broken one collected.
  5. I'm sure they could but would anyone apply a patch sent in an unsolicited email from Capita (or anyone for that matter) without checking. I have had patches mailed several times and as long as they are from the named person I am expecting them from with I see no problem.
  6. Roll on next week when my Exchange expert comes back off holiday. In the meantime I am getting an error message that the STARTTLS certificate will expire in 956C0643DA4BCEA0A9465ED204A1A3AB90B16108 hours. Can anyone tell me how many hours this is (it's obviously not a straight hex conversion). I don't really want to get bogged down in certificate renewal and am hoping that I can safely leave it until next week
  7. The only thing is I know my tech has a fairly straightforward way of doing it - I just forgot to ask him before he went on holiday and we have an issue with some pupils who applied for visas for a school trip and didn't put their correct school email address on the form (john.Smith@...... instead of 05john.smith@...). Now the teacher isn't sure if the visa application has gone through but the reply has gone astray or if there was a problem with the application. Obviously the embassy concerned aren't bothered about checking their mail logs for our returned mail. (The teacher now admits it was a daft idea to let them use their own email for the applications and it shouldn't happen again)
  8. I can't see a mail forum so I'm putting this here. I'm temporarily in charge of our mail server while the usual tech is on holiday and I only have a very basic understanding of how it works. I have been asked to check if some messages arrived on our server with the domain name name correct but the with the recipient name incorrect. Using the Bad Mail filter in message tracking I can see undeliverable mail but I can't see the recipient name that was used. Can anyone tell me how to find it
  9. Ditto - what about CPM and all those lovely DOS 5 configurations for autoexec.bat and config.sys
  10. If you're talking about moving SIMS to another server not the migration to SQL 2008, I do it by setting up SQL installing SIMS with a blank database then restoring a backup of the data using dbattach. I've done it a happily couple of times. One advantage of this is that you don't touch the original server or the data on it so if anything goes wrong you can carry on using it while you work out what happened then restore an up to date backup when you're happy. You can also do a trial run because until you remap the S drive (or it's equivalent) no one can see it. You also only need to take SIMS offline while you do the backup and restore.
  11. It should be fairly straightforward in any relational database - I'm just doing something similar in Access where I use a subset of my config database with a room form which shows all the resources in a given room (computers, printer, projector etc). It shouldn't be difficult to convert your excel sheets into database tables and then create the queries and forms you need. If you're not familiar with Access you might find this a good starting point http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/templates/TC010184591033.aspx (of course you don't have to use Access it depends what database software you have available or how good you are with SQL)
  12. Check on support net or with your local SIMS support but I've been told standard 64 bit server 2008 (and 64 bit 2003) are supported but there is as yet no support for R2. That doesn't necessarily mean it won't work
  13. I have an Access database which we use for recording our hardware. We label computers with the room number followed by a dash then the computer number i.e. Room1-01 etc. When I try to list them in order I get Room10-09, Room1-01, Room10-10; similarly Room1-10, Room11-01. Obviously Access is ignoring the dashes. Does anyone know of a way round this without rejigging our whole naming convention.
  14. You can get the end user enquiry tool from software shelf which puts an icon in the program tray which they can hover over to show their account balance - it also pops up notification if they try to print more pages than they have credit for. We use it under XP and server 2003 I don't see why it shouldn't work with 2008
  15. Capita do support 64 bit but not server 2008 R2 yet
  16. We use Print Manager plus and allow 5 prints per week - lower school, 20 upper school and 100 6th form. If they need more they can come to the help desk and request it but have to explain why. When we first introduced this there was a huge decrease in waste printing - stuff just left lying on the printer but now they are much more careful with it. Staff have unlimited credit but departments pay for their own office toner and photocopying. It's only if they are really mean and use the library or IT room printers that they aren't charged but we can spot it in the reports if it's happening regularly
  17. over 60 and female - can anyone match that
  18. If the spring main release has been applies you should be up to version 7.128 database build 3.61.643
  19. Date() works for me on a date column but I separate date and time into different fields
  20. I'm in progress of speccing a server for the SQL upgrade from 2005 to 2008, at present we have a separate disk for the transaction logs but reading around suggests that in SQL server 2008 this is no longer necessary. I wondered what any one else thought

    MIS System

I'm happy with SIMS. I like the ease of upgrading -- I hear of people having problems but for me I run SOLUS and it works and I have a script which runs workstation upgrades automatically with hardly ever a problem. The biggest annoyance is when an upgrade 'breaks' something which previously worked. My feeling is though that the best application for any job from word processing onwards is the one you know best. When my users have problems it is usually because they don't know how to get the result they want rather than it not being possible.
  22. We have discussed out of hours support but there is no demand for it on a regular basis. When it is requested it is for events in school. Maybe the 51% of schools who don't use 3rd party support have found this cheaper - I haven't read the full report so maybe it's explained there but I often wonder why there is an assumption that outsourcing etc must be cheaper - it's certainly not more flexible
  23. I do it by redirecting the connect.ini to the connect.ini on the server. Different shortcuts run batch files which map the SIMS drive (S for us) to the required server and I also incorporate a message in the bat file to remind the user which database they ar econnecting to
  24. So it's not just Capita that pulls upgrades
  25. I've found the answer - replace the " ' " with " ' ' ". The actual syntax is Com = Replace(Com, "'", "''"). Thanks for your comments Tom did you want to see the forms etc anyway or were you just interested to help me find the solution
