Hi all We recently switched all our Lenovo laptops for shiny new M1 MacBook Airs in our Primary/Elementary school. Everyone seems pretty happy. However we really need to continue using the Nelson Handwriting Font that our handwriting scheme is based on. I have contacted OUP to see if they have any plans to make it compatible with M1 Macs and Big Sur, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone else had any experience of this combination or other suggestions for fonts for teaching handwriting that work on these machines. Thanks, yes, I think we'll go for good old Windows Photo Viewer for the time being - at least they'll be able to open photos to look at them. Then I can point them towards Pixlr or something if they want to edit them.

Hi all We are having a nightmare in our Primary Computing lab with the Windows 10 Photos app not working on half the computers - seems to be user-dependent too, with it working for some users and not for others. Our technicians (who are normally very competent) assure me that they cannot find a solution. We liked the Photos app for it's simple interface and basic photo-editing features. Can anyone recommend another app that will open photos and allow basic editing (e.g. cropping, filters etc.)? We have paint.net but it's way too complicated for Y1 and Y2 children to use - we'd like to avoid anything with a layer system, and we don't want to use an online app like Pixlr (although the features and interface of Pixlr are at about the right level). It needs to be something that will open when you double-click a JPEG/PNG etc. We've had XnView and ACDsee recommended but they don't seem quite simple enough. Anyone else had problems with the Photos app? Anyone have a good alternative for use with younger children? Thanks

Yes, that does seem to be what I want! It doesn't seem to be possible in Meraki, or, at least, there is no way to enable it explicitly. I don't know if anyone else using Meraki has encountered this issue?

Hi all I had an interesting discussion with Meraki at BETT over the weekend. We are paying Meraki customers, which we use for managing 300+ iPads in a K-12 environment. We thought that the reason apps were not automatically updating (when an update became available in the App Store) was something to do with the restrictions we have in place that prevent students installing or deleting apps. It's very annoying to have to manually push app updates from Meraki, when apps should be able to update automatically. Teachers' iPads, which don't have those restrictions in place, happily update their apps automatically as and when those updates appear. However Meraki told me that, in fact, since iOS 9.3, Apple have changed app-update behaviour so that apps that have been pushed by your MDM and which are managed by your MDM will not update automatically - updates have to be manually pushed from the MDM. They said this was true for all MDMs, not just Meraki. It seems odd that our teachers' iPads continue to happily auto update their apps, although I am going to check this again as I may be wrong! Anyway, I was wondering: Can anyone using another MDM (e.g. JAMF) confirm if apps will automatically update, even if they were pushed by the MDM and are managed by the MDM? Also, has anyone found a way for apps to auto-update even if app-install restrictions are in place? If so, which specific restrictions are you using?We have: "Allow installing apps" unticked "Allow in-app purchases" unticked "Allow app removal" unticked "Allow App Store" unticked It must be a common requirement to have app-installation restricted but wanting existing apps to automatically update? Does anyone know if decent quality generic USB hubs would work for simple simultaneous syncing with iTunes? Or even with Apple Configurator? I'm just desperate to avoid syncing each one, one after the other!

OK, so it looks these are the options around the £500 mark, all doing 10 ipads at a time: RM Qube Griffin 10-bay MultiDock Kensington Charge n Sync Cabinet Half the price of anything else, but I would have to sync in two batches.

Hi all I'm looking for a cheap solution for simultaneously syncing 20 iPads in a school context. All the trolleys seem to be very expensive, over £1500-£2000. I'm looking for something that's more like a hub than a trolley, and hoping to spend a lot less! The closest I've found is the IQ 16 Sync Charge Box at £938.95 Does anyone know of any alternatives, hopefully for 20 rather than 16, and preferably even cheaper! Or am I living in a dream world...?

Thanks for the reply, BC. Rather than using Configurator for the initial setup, what do you think of the idea I read somewhere of setting up one iPad exactly how you want it, then backing it up to iTunes, then restoring that back-up to all the other iPads so they are identical? Is it even legal?

I am trying to set up an iPad scheme with 24 iPads in a school in Portugal, where Apple's VPP program is not available yet. I understand that, in this environment (multiple users and multiple devices) you have to purchase each app for each device, and I think we will have to use iTunes Gift Cards to purchase apps for each iPad. I have a few questions which I am hoping members of this community will be able to help me with: 1. Am I right in thinking that I will need a different iTunes Gift Card for each iPad? 2. Can all 24 iPads be linked to the same iTunes account, or will I need multiple accounts? 3. Is it possible to use Apple Configurator to set up the iPads if you are not using the VPP scheme? 4. If not, then is there any point getting a trolley that syncs as well as charges, or will each iPad have to be sync'ed individually if not using Apple Configurator?
