Unable to move the pagefile at the moment, but since this is the 1st occurance in 11 months of me working here I doubt it has much or anything to do with the location of the pagefile. I am indeed looking at it in the task manager and have had a good look through the processes. Nothing that would account for 99% use of a 7.75GB Pagefile (well 3.75GB RAM & 4GB Pagefile). It regularly sits around 1.5-2gb usage. Thanks for the responses though. A restart has cleared it and no recurrence so far.

Our Pagefile uage has shot up to 99% on our Forest Root this afternoon ... nothing obvious is sucking the life out of the server ... not looking for a miracle cure as we'll reboot systems this evening and apart from being unable to access the management console and RDP (although this appears to be working again now) ... users are currently unaffected. Any ideas where to llok for causes? Event Log hasn't yielded much yet ... but there's a lot to trawl through. Luke

Luke_T replied to meastaugh1's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
time to ressurect a nice old thread, we got 55 of these on the cheap and I have configured them locally with a usb key & setup ftp updating which seems to work ok to configure them on masse, also the power control at least is working through thte altiris deployment console. Has anyone had any luck modifying any more settings? -
Shameless bump for the last 24hrs of the ad :-) Although with 18 applicants you'd think I'd be happy ...

Closing Date for application is this Friday (24th) & interviews will be scheduled for a week later onwards.

I do question his sanity on a regular basis!

Glad to hear it! I look forward to reviewing your application along with all the others. Luke T

Indeed, we have had a fair amount of investment in the IT department this year and more for next year, which has (finally) trickled down to pay.

Hey All, So after a month and a bit without a technician (1 of 3) the Powers That Be have finally approved the new pay scale & so we can now begin the hunt! My name's Luke and I'm a recovering geek. As the Deputy network manager I'd be working with you you day to day so any informal queries, feel free to post or pm me. Details can be found here (Oxfordshire Council) and should appear on the school website tomorrow. A few notes after some questions: - NVQ 3 is the minimum qualification & have a degree is not a bad thing. - The ad does state equivalent qualification &/or experience so it's pretty open ended! - JD 2. PAT testing is something I am desperately trying to get contracted out and am very close to achieving! It is still in the JD as 1 of our technicians is currently qualified to do it and bizarrely enjoys it! I would encourage anyone interested to apply or at leat enquire. Cheers, Luke T Old posts relating to the same position if anyone is curious to the back story: Post 1 Post 2 - a little useless since I deleted the ad when the post above went up

Thin Client Hardware Comparison
Luke_T replied to Luke_T's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Admitedly ... she did reneg the hp price down to within £10 of the Axel one ... and that includes a keyboard & mouse ... and she's getting the TFT's from RM also at a very good price ... and she did quote the audio as 1 of the factors ... and we already have desks with built in mounting for a thinclient so no TFT mount needed but with no testing of the HP unit and the poor rep it has for speed and for the remote management software ... I'm a little disappointed ... since I'll be the one setting them up and keeping the operational ... gtg she's coming up behind me .... -
Thin Client Hardware Comparison
Luke_T replied to Luke_T's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Despite my best efforts ... RM were not forthcoming with samples ... and approaching manufacturers directly we were quoted a 30 day lead time and in order to get these installed on time my boss decided we did not have a month's grace. So the only unit I did manage to get a hands on was the Axel m70. And a wonderful experience it was too ... from unpacking it to setting it up was the easiest experience of my computing career ... comparable to plugging in 4 cables, clicking on the English language button, entering 10 numbers in the right order and ticking a box ... in fact that's exactly what it was like :-) All done in just a few meager minutes ... a startup time of just 17 seconds on a static IP and 22 seconds on DHCP ... it was as easy as that. Upon conclusion of this test ... my boss decided that despite our lack of need of any audio support ... and a lower price ... and a simpler setup ... faster boot time ... quicker repair guarantee ... smaller physical and energy footprint ... we would not be going with the Axel unit. AGHHRRRRR Matthew at Axel, was very helpful, accomodating and competative ... but despite this neither he nor I were able to beat the combined brand power and comfort of ordering HP Thin Clients from RM. Hopefully, everything will go as smoothly and easily. -
I'm in the process of arranging for a trial of the following Thin Clients: Axel m70W (on it's way) HP Neoware c50 Igel Smart CE Wyse s10 (They're arranged in quoted price order for 55 with the spaces indicating a significant difference in price) If anyone's interested I'll post up some photos, findings and general thoughts, when i get down to testing them! Hey all, just thought I'd kick things off in this brand spanking new forum by asking what people use their PDA/UMPC/Phone for in their school. Make and model might be useful for those looking to get into it: PDA: HP iPAQ 114 - Soon to be used for wireless registration with ePortal (Serco) by the PE department. UMPC: Samsung Q1 - Used in the past for general maintenance and testing of network, wireless connectivity, setting up of IP cameras, remote to servers, err ... Phone: Various - Used in the past as work mobile phone for contact over a large (split) site, calls routed from office after certain time ... Might be useful as a reference for finding new uses for those flash gadgets we have ... Luke T

Hi, we're having a problem with viewing our RM management console. It will open and expand all trees, EXCEPT the desktops/curriculum tree for which it gives the error "The response from the server was not valid xml: End tad 'head' does not match the start tag 'link'." I was wondering if anyone had ever had the same/similar problem ... or if it makes sense to someone more technical insight ... RM are as usual blaming everything but their software so whilst working through their endless list of checks ... (which have all been done before ...) any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Luke T

Virtualisation of Thin Client Server
Luke_T replied to ndavies's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
oh did I enjoy that video paper! ahh those blue sky dreams just got updated! -
Hi, I'm in the same position as tazz ... I was initially just looking for any general tips you can give me ... our rollout of serco on an RM CC3 system is happening over the summer. - what kind of things might have helped you prepare in retrospect? ie: ways to prepare the RM network for serco? things that went wrong that could maybe have been avoided? we're also moving from sims to cmis/eportal but that's a whole nother kettle of fish! Hi, My name's Luke. I joined the ranks of IT technical support ... well back when i was in school ... Our incumbent (read ancient) IT technician was less than willing to learn new tricks ... so despite not doing any IT qualifications in school I became the IT prefect and defacto technician ... fun times :-) I then defected the cause and went to study Philosophy at university, dragging it out for 4 years and travelling extensively ... well actually what i did was start up a little computing business at the university and study in between doing that! When I (finally) graduated ... I decided it would be a waste to actually use my degree and I became a part-time IT tech for a local school ... I have just (today) secured myself a permanent job as an Assistant Network Manager at school in Oxford. :-) errr ... that was quite an egotistic post ... but i'm in a good mood and celebrating.
