  1. Hi Everyone, This is turning into a very interesting thread. On occasion I mix my words up in sentances especially when teachers ask what I'm doing or how I fixed the problem. Does anyone else find talking and explaining things in a logical way a problem, I know there are many types of dyslexics so this may not be an issue, but I'd be interestd in knowing. Thanks for the replies! Martin
  2. Hi Everyone, We have "Autograph Version 3" Unfortunatly our CD is damaged and the manufacturers won't send us a replacement CD. They charge £200 for a replacement CD. If anybody has this version is it possible to mail us a copy in the post, PM me if you can. P.S. It's legal to do so under our license agreement. Many Thanks, Martin
  3. Hi Everyone, I'm Dyslexic and I was wondering if anyone else here is and how it's helped/hindered their IT career and working in a school.
  4. Hi, I've been searching online and in some of the Edugeek forums on how to install SIMS.net on Windows 7 64 Bit and unfortunatly I couldn't find any specifics (I'm probably just not looking hard enough). Anyway I managed to install SIMS.net on Windows 7 64 bit, heres how I did it... 1. Make sure regional and keyboard settings are set to English/UK 2. Turn off UAC 3. Right-Click the installer executable (not shortcuts) and click on "troubleshoot compatibility". The wizard then suggests running the program in "Win XP SP2" compatibility mode. The the program in this mode and everything should run smoothly. Cheers, Martin
  5. Hi, We are currently looking for a free to use network management tools that will send us e-mail alerts when a problem is detected on the network so we can resolve any issues before it becomes a problem for the staff. We're specifically interested in printing i.e. out of paper, out of toner, jam, drum, printer name etc etc. I have a found a free program called spiceworks which I hope to play around with later today. So I was just wondering if anyone else knows/uses free network management tools on RM CC4 and their overall experience
  6. How have you been getting on with the home learning college I tried to do the MCSE with them and I felt pretty much left to fend for myself the tutor support was horrible to non-existant. So because of this I quit the course and they said it was non refundable - £2000
  7. I did a web development course in my local college I would start there, possibly a part-time course? In the meantime there is a brilliant website: W3Schools Online Web Tutorials Which have step by step tutorials, code snippets etc etc. Once you've learnt HTML4, CSS and javascript I would recommend learning PHP or ASP as a server side scripting language with SQL to boot. On the W3 schools website once you feel confident in what you've learnt you can take practise tests, which you need to be getting at least 80% pass on. The website also offers online exams if you pass them you get a certificate. I also highly recommend the CIW course. But furst things first get enrolled on a local college web development course either a city & guilds one or a BTEC. Hope I helped PM me anytime if you have further questions.
  8. Very, very depressing.
  9. I completely agree it shouldn't be devalued, just wondered if there is an IT equivelent.
  10. It's a pity it ever caught on maybe BCS will create one
  11. Hi Everyone, When Googling earlier I came across this website: EngVibe That explains that engineer graduates are awarded a ring for their chosen profession I was wondering if anyone agrees this is a good thing for IT technicians and computer engineers etc etc. Yes/No ?
  12. Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I'm glad this is just on CC3 then; since we're migrating in a couple of weeks it's not that much of a problem. Cheers. Martin
  13. We've used a number of USB mice from a number of brands e.g. Microsoft, IBM, DELL, Genius and RM. Is that with a student account?
  14. Hi Everyone, This is probably a stupid question and one easily answered, but we've never had the time to really look into it... We are on CC3, soon to be migrating to CC4... Students often remove USB mice from the workstation and put them into another port or steal them from another PC. However students don't have admin rights to reinstall/install the mice again; so someone with admin rights e.g. me has to go and logon and reinstall the drivers. It does sometimes work if a student sees the username password prompt (asking for perms to install driver) and clicks cancel. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and if they know a solution. Also is this issue still in CC4 if so is there also a solution to that as well? Many Thanks, Martin
  15. I am creating a new GPO as normal through GPMC the standard ADM's are the ones that are missing.
  16. I guess the only solution is to use removable media then, at least we can control their file size.
  17. I'm being careful at the moment I've created a workstation type through the RMMC which is a clone of "Shared Laptop" and i'm editing that if theres a problem I can just delete it through RMMC.
  18. Sorry I should of started off with me initial problem. We have 20 wireless laptops that we are hoping to build on CC4 so far everything has gone on ok. But when the students need leave the network for some reason e.g. another room or on a trip they need a method of storing their files until they get back to school. The problems with USB drives and SD cards is that they can get lost easily so thats a non-starter. We have also looked at RM's built in functionality called RM Synchronise or something similar, when requesting some more information about this RM admitted to me that there are still performance issues with this solution. The solution works by users marking files they wish to edit offline, very similar to MS Offline files. However students can also mark their entire profile available offline. When they get back on the network the offline files automatically synchronise to the network, now picture the previously stated performance problems on a wireless network with 20 laptops. Long story short we are now looking into redirecting my documents to point locally rather than their N drive, it looks like the only way to pull this off on CC4 is to use the loopback policy that is now missing from AD Thank God It's A Friday
  19. Yeh but sometimes RMMC has it's limitations.
  20. Hi Everyone, I was just browsing through the active directory today (as you do) and I found all of the built in Microsoft Administrative Templates have been removed from all GPO's. Even if I create a GPO from scratch I still find they are missing. Instead of Computer Config\Admin templates\System etc there is now just Research Machines. Has anyone else came across this? This may be a big issue for us as we often create custom GPO's
  21. I second that!
  22. We usually build our laptops by deploying an image via Acronis Snap Deploy. Currently students logon to the vanilla laptops with the same account that they use in CC3 however... ...because CC3 is managed by GPO's and some software components for one reason or another the students account at one point becomes corrupted. Acronis have consistantly given us bad support for a number of years so we would like to move away from them, we are also looking into Norton Ghost as a deployment method but we'd rather have both the laptops and workstations all managed under the same technology as it's easier/quicker/consistant to manage. As for using USB/SD cards we may have to use this as a solution but it's much easier to lose a USB drive/SD card than it is to lose a laptop.
  23. Where do I donate, can't find the page?
  24. How do I become and Edugeek supporter? I've seen on some accounts they have an edugeek supporter badge. Martin.
  25. I was wondering what other schools most commonly reported problem is? Our is: Q: "Nothings displaying from my laptop" A: "Fn + F8 to display on both projector and the laptop" Whats yours?
