  1. Thanks Guys, Yes we are a SIMS school and FMS for the time being, the first meeting with PSF is the 25 Feb but I dont think its anything to do with the technical side of thing.
  2. Hi Everyone, I just have quick question for you all, does anybody use PS Financials as our finance officer has decided to ditch FMS and go with this solution. She is very vague in what she is telling me as regards to the setup of the system so just wondered if anyone is using it and wether you can answer my questions please; 1. I beleive it runs on SQL Server 2008 (do they do it themselves or is it left for me) ??? 2. I also beleive it has a web portal for some reason, does this need any ports opening on the firewall etc 3. How easy are the clients to setup ??? Cheers in advance, Stan.
  3. Its fairly straight forward, if you go into system manager and create a backup it will create a .BAK file, copy this were you want to. Install the SQL instance on your new computer then drop to the command prompt, navigate to the location of your SQL instance, i.e. c:\program files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10\Binn the run DBattach /RESTOREUI This will then run DBattach and allow you to do a full restore of the database without any loss of data.
  4. Hi guys, If you dont mind me asking how much are we talking about smoothwall costing ??? I have someone coming to promote this product to me on Thursday at 1100 and just want a comparison to see if its a good deal or not, I have been talking to websense for the last 2 weeks but they still wont tell me how much it will be.
  5. Is there anything showing in event viewer at all ???
  6. Good Morning Everyone, We are currently looking at replacing our existing IWB with new touchscreens, the touchscreens come with there own software but the teachers are use to Active Inspire and Active Primary 3. If we get rid of the IWB's are we still covered for the software on the touchscreens or do we have to purchase another licence ???
  7. Does it actually have to go on the server ??? I was going to install this on my network when i start next month but my new office and the server are at opposite ends of the building and I cant really leav an RDP session to the server open all day.
  8. What sort of machine is this on ???, we had a big problem at one of our schools with this and it turned out to be one of the chipsets in the viglen pc's that was causing the problem. Until we got a driver update from viglen it just kept doing it but after that it was fine. So maybe first have a look and see if any of your chipset drivers can be updated.
  9. Good Morning Everyone, Well things have advanced in my search for a wireless solution and both Meraki and Ruckus are sending me some equipment so I can do some testing of my own, both of them have very good sales people each saying there product is the best but due to the construction of our school i.e. 2ft thick concrete walls I would like to see them both in action. I have created a series of tests to perform and will then write up a report to give to the head and chair of governors, what I am looking for is a piece of software (preferably free) that will monitor wireless performance whilst carrying out the tests, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated either for windows or ipad preferably. Regards, Stan.
  10. Thanks guys, I gave spoken to a supplier and they are coming out on 4th March to do a wireless survey and leave me some equipment to play with.
  11. Hi Everyone, I came so close to purchasing Meraki for my school when I decided to look at the Ruckus solution, it does come in a lot cheaper and they will do a free wireless survey for me then leave me with some of the equipment to trial. I plan to install an AP in each classroom and when I spoke to sthe supplier he said it was a bit of overkill I had to correct him and say it was future proof, but my question is for an average size classroom which AP's should I be looking at as I want to make sure if we do this investment I want it to work. Thanks in advance, Stan.
  12. Hi Everyone, Well we went to the Bett conference yesterday to have a good look around and my new boss ran into a company called 'webanywhere', they were promoting a product called 'school jotter' (School Websites - School Web Design, CMS and Hosting - School Jotter Website Builder) then came back raving about it. Does anybody know anything about the site and how much it costs ???, I did ask them while I was there but they seemed to be a bit shy when you ask how much it is going to cost. Regards Stan.
  13. Hello again, Just a quick one this time I hope, is there a quick way of migrating all existing emails and folders from a live@edu address to a gmail address ??? Regards, Stan.
  14. Dont worry about if folks, in between posting and waiting the domain is now confirmed
  15. Hi everyone, How long does it normally take to set up a new email system for staff at my school ??? I thought I would get this sorted today but after over an hour google is still veryfing payment and wont let me do certain tasks. does it normally take this long or have i missed something ???
  16. Hi everyone, Has anyone paid a subscription for this site https://iamlearning.co.uk/, my ICT Co-ordinator has asked me to have a look and see if it is a good buy, sadley I am the Schools IT Manager and do not get involved in curriculum software decisions. Has anybody used it and is it any good for a primary school ?????
  17. Thanks Guys, I will give advanced installer a go as well, got a teacher that has purchased 72 pieces of sience software and not a single msi on any of them
  18. Thanks guys, this info has certainly given me some food for thought.
  19. I did wonder about that, and with the tile system that Windows 8 offers as you say may be a bit confusing for the staff rather than the children.....
  20. Good Morning Everyone, I am new to my post and looking for a LAN toolkit to tidy up a mess the previous chap left behind in the nursery, There is a 3-com 48 port switch screwed to the wall, all the cat 5 cables come through the wall and have RJ45 connections on the end of them. It doesn't look very nice and its not professional so I would like to order a cab and a patch panel and re-cable it all but I dont have a tool kit, it would have to have the obvious tools in it for crimping and punching down etc... but also some sort of device to identify which cable goes to which socket would be nice. I have seen this but has anyone seen anything better ??? LAN Installation Tool Kit | Screwfix.com Cheers in advance Stan.
  21. Good Morning Everyone, Does anybody have any experience of using Windows 8 in a primary school IT suite ??? I am wondering how it reacts to restriction policies from a 2008 server ??? is Server 2008 capable of doing the restrictions or does it need an admx update etc ??? How are primary school coping with Windows 8 do young children struggle with it or is it the way to go, we currently have a suite of out of warranty Dell pc's running xp sp3 and wish to replace them all. While Windows 7 would be an upgrade I was contemplating missing this out all together and going to Windows 8. Any advice would be helpfull. Regards Stan.
  22. We went down the Kyocera route, it was a big change for us replacing every printer in school and 2 years on we have had no problems with them whatsoever, other than the obvious replacement of toner cartridges, highly recomend them.
  23. Thanks John, In between the replies I have had a call from a lady called Hannah and arraged to see her at BETT on Friday :-).
  24. Hi John, What sort of price is smoothwall ??? Its really difficult to get an answer at them when you want one.
  25. Hi Everyone, On April 1st this year I am to take a position of Schools IT Manager at a local primary school, at the moment they get there web filtering from the LEA via a central websense box. At the end of March the LEA will be disbanding the schools team and the schools will lose access to the web filtering they currently receive. I have no experience in setting up web filtering as this is something my previous boss insisted he would do (knowledge is power), so my questions are as follows; What is a good solution for a school (e.g. smoothwall, symantec cloud etc) Which solutions are cost efective (e.g. best value) Minimum and ease of install (e.g. is any special hardware needed etc, will companies set it up for a fee etc). Ease of use after installation. Thanks in Advance.
