We have vlans for: Staff PCs, Student PCs, Printers, Phones, Servers, Management etc. pretty standard. There is also a small scope in a VLAN for "Internet Out" so to speak. basically all this has in it is the firewall (172.26.233.219) - From here I can ping it from any machine, and I can ping any machine from the firewall. Good. In the Core's config is IP-Route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.26.233.219 What I really wanted to do was create a transparant bridge with the smoothwall. I gave this the IP address of 172.26.233.218 so it lived in the Internet VLAN 99. The bridge gateway was 172.26.233.219. traffic did go up the bridge but to get back to its destination it would come back down the management side. I should be able to just use the bridge with no management cable connected to port 1. As soon as port 1 was disconnected just leaving the bridge the internet would fail and I could no longer access smoothwall. The servers connected to the core were all untagged. Smoothwall bridge was untagged in its Internet VLAN99. Thoughts appreciated!!!!

I have recently taken over a network and Im struggling with what I envisaged to be a pretty simple task implementing Smoothwall having done it before. Ill try and make it simple. The network has various VLANS, I conntect my new smoothwall to the server vlan and give it an address. I can talk to the box from other servers no problem. I have a Staff vlan, I can rdp, ping talk etc to the servers from here. I cannot talk at all to the smoothwall box. Heres where it gets odd and I should probably have stopped because before this bit and left it at that! I add a second interface on the smooth and bolt it onto my staff vlan, I enable external access to this port. Fails. From the Smoothwall I can ping servers and get a reply. I cannot ping staff machines. I regularly see Reverse Lookup failed at the top of the ping screen, a clue maybe! #I have added the routes in Smoothwall for my staff vlan network, ive added in the server network to just for fun. #I've enabled external access on these ports as well in smoothwall - but Id of thought Id of been able to ping them regardless? Has anyone on any thoughts on why this issue maybe presenting itself? Cheers. Steve

I need to produce a report which shows all the students free. Column headings ideally would be: Name, Form, date, period Has anyone got any idea how you would start to even produce such a report...? The other way round is simple!

Does anyone use Ms sccm orchestra to automate the creation etc of staff and student accounts from their MIS. Previous school I used Tools4Ever umra. Fantastic. Out of my budget this time.

I found a post from 2011 but think some of my requirements are now more established. AirCon failed in our server rooms. Now I want a temp sensor which will report by email and iOS app. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My school has decided they was to digitalise the reporting of accident, incidents etc. Does anyone use or can recommend any software. Not a huge budget. Making speculative calls to some software providers has come back with £15k. That's too much. Any feedback welcomed! Cheers Steve

I have a moodle implementation that is coming along nicely and would like to move it closer to a production stage, although, one thing is stopping me! Whenever I try an upload a file Moodle Crashes. The wheel keeps turning and I need to close and re open the browser for it to be able to log in again! I can however use the mobile App which I know is like its own build of moodle so may not come as a complete surprise. I have lots of logs and things but wondering really if anyone has experienced the same problem??? Thanks. Steve

What version of Server are you using?

Is it possible to somehow create a rule in Exchange that when say 10 emails are exchanged between two accounts per day a email is sent to an administrator? I am thinking this through from a safeguarding point of view. Thoughts appreciated.

I know this is quite a well discussed subject on the net and more so since the impending end of .local issued certificates from authorities. I have a new Wildcard Cert, I also managed to get a .local cert separately from a Cert Auth. Good I thought, put the two in and exchange will be happy. No. Only the SSL will work for obvious reasons! So I figure to make exchange happy and stop my Certificate warning on my internal stations I need to change my references to my local server on the exchange server to .org ones where my Cert is issued for. I think I need to run this: Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity HostName -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri https://mail.yourdomain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -Identity "HostName\EWS (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://mail.yourdomain.com/ews/exchange.asmx Set-OABVirtualDirectory -Identity "HostName\oab (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://mail.yourdomain.com/oab With some internal DNS changes I should be able to contain the traffic etc where appropriate. I regularly rant at parent mail! I'm very very upset with the whole product, the award they prize on their website infuriates me and suddenly I become even more wary of companies that display accolades on the front page! I have pm2 +pay. Here are some of my challenges, I hope these are resolved in pmx - can anyone confirm? 1. Sims import uses preferred names, cashless uses legal. - legal is right I feel, money is involved! 2. The csv upload has 2 columns entitled forename and surname (student and parent) 3. No unique identifier for pupils and parents, they just hack together forenames and date of births. There seems to be a tense relationship with our cashless provider. The credit card processing element is unreliable. Payments are regularly not completed and takes the money out and puts it back 5 days later. The registration process for new parents is horrible. The road map is slow to deliver any new products. They sold it well but in practice it's so broken and hacked together the product falls flat on its face. The interface has been criticised by our parents no end. When I can muster up the energy to propose to management another move I will again look into another provider. I'm deeply saddened with the company and find few people speaking positively. If sims integrated with slg a payment module I maybe sold!

GPO CONFIG.docxI can replicate this issue quite easily now, here's my issue! Deployed DirectAccess (1 NIC, 2012r2, behind a NAT) Deployed GPO to machine, works as desired off the CorpNet When on the CorpNet (wired) no problem! When on the CorpNet (Wireless) we have an issue. Issue symptoms: 1. DirectAccess acknowledges its on the CorpNet 2. I can Ping IP address of DNS 3. I cannot Ping FQDN of DNS 4. Anything needing to access a FQDN fails (eg Exchange, Lync) 5. Removing the DA Client from the GPO lets the machine work fine on Wireless. In addition, not being able to resolve FQDN means the URLs to establish if a connection is internal or external make the functionality unreliable. Has anyone had any experience of this issue?

I have installed and all working install of Direct Access. Have to say, there is something very slick about being able to load SIMS from the desktop and remote around the network without being in Remote. Here is my issue: When I view Youtube (for example) on my fast internet connection at home, with DirectAccess enabled, its slow, very slow. Now no doubt up and down stream connections are having the impact here but my question really is, is it possible for IE traffic to be using the wifi connection my pc is hooked on rather than sending all the traffic down DA? I have a weird issue when using UF675w. It loses connection with the projector and I get a blue SMART screen appear, it reconnects momentarily later. If I have the speakers on it will also ping like its found new hardware. It does it on all 4 of my UF675w projectors (HDMI) but my 60 Epson 475w are ok.... Has anyone else experienced this. Its only happened of recent... Cheers. Steve

Hi I'm thinking this question might be a few months to early for E.Geek but going to give it a go anyways. We are a big Dell school, we have just got new Dell 3340 Lats in which are the educational designed ones. In addition we have just got the new V2 Trolley and the Upgrade kit so they slot into the trolley - no wires! If anyone else has one let me know as we were told we were the first in EMEA to get them. My Issue: WoWLAN. I got WOL to work after correcting some bits in the BIOS and Network Adapter which was easy as we had to do it for several hundered OptiPlex as well. To get the devices to wake on the wireless is proving hard work! Corrected settings in the BIOS, network adapter again and applied a RegHack supplied by MS Configure Wake on Wireless LAN (WoWLAN) Anyone had any luck? Steve

Does any one have a structure in place using the VLE for delivering training with regards to e-safety? I would like to consider some sort of SCORM package for our VLE (Frog) where by I can give to students and staff to complete and keep track of training delivered. Anyone any thoughts? Steve

Is there a way that a Java Applet can ensure its running on at leave 1.7 before launching? I have an applet I don't want to run using old Java. Any suggestions? Java_Version Parameter was my thought.

I have a Wealth of testin to go with this but in short, does anyone else get a hid class error using verifier with just smart notebook installed? I can replicate this on loads of different hardware and new out the box dell laptops. The en result it our machines restarting. Staff stayed quiet about this when it started to happen and when we became wise we got mini dump logs from every machine with it installed on (smart notebook) Any one willing to test ms verifier on machines with smart note on id be great full of the results!

I have it working. Not 100% it's working properly internally but it should be. What have you done to date to get it working? Adfs 2 installed? Meta data to frog yet? Certificates in order? Frog so negotiated with frog? I have sent them lots of bugs so expect some interesting change requests coming out soon. Where is your school? Pm of you like. Steve

I've been working on this for the past few nights and cant seem to make it work, if anyone can offer any guidance I would be grateful. Table: Transactions: ID,Date,Title,Category,Value, Budget Name Table: Budget: Budget Name Budget Years: Budget Name, Date From, Date To Form entitles Budget, Fields : Date From, Date To, Budget Name So within the form budget I have a subform which I want to group the categories and get a total value. THE tricky part is, I only want it to include values from the budget specified in the form and the date range of the form. Tweaking my approach, I can do one or the other but not both! Thanks. Steve

Today something strange happened to one of my 3 Windows 2008R2 Servers, strange isn't the work really! Running VMware. It failed its backup to disk last night, I had errors every 5 or so seconds saying there was no space left on for Active Directory Database, this also refered to only one user, which didn't really stand out for any reason apart from a tweak with SIMS earlier on todo with logins... Another message suggested it had stopped replicating. All pointing to a pretty unhappy DC! Anyway space was ok, around 20GB min free on each.. I gave it a restart as planned anyway today after installing some updates. On coming back to life, I got recovery mode for Server.. and a quick flash of a blue screen. The DC is my 2nd DNS, DHCP, my only WSUS, WDS and a couple of other roles. Do I: 1. Restore from backup, demote and promote DC 2. Build a new one and use this opportunity to implement a 2012 server well I'm at it, maybe to a spare VM the old DC for some of the setting etc. 3. New install of 2008 and play it safe? Id be interested to hear your suggestions, right now I would be hoping on the backup route to be honest. This is a worst case scenario assuming I cannot get the old DC working tomorrow. Does anyone have it so users Quotas increase slightly year on year? How can I do this on a per-user or Per Security Group or OU Basis? Thanks. Steve

I used this command line in Impero but it could be made into a batch script: MsiExec.exe /X{3EF2D2B9-5937-49E0-823A-77DD319B6C1B} /q You may need to find the ID from Registry for uninstalling the MSI but google uninstall MSi from CMD will point you in the right direction.
