    No Internet

Hi all Having major issues with are main windows server this morning. I started with SIMS failing and no one being able to log on to SIMS - getting a connection error Reason 3 (one of those useful SIMS error messages!) after a bit of research here on EduGeek and elsewhere on the internet, found a way to get them back on, but still none the wiser what was the cause The result was to change/add a line or two to the Connect ini file. I went to the server room to check on the server and found a Virus alert on the screen!! The virus had been deleted. I restarted the server and installed some updates that had been waiting and everything was fine. Anyway.... Since then the staff cannot get on the internet or print to the network printers. I've restarted the print services and checked proxy settings but still no luck. And can get on the internet directly from the server. We have a Apple Mac network here too (completely separate network) and all those users can connect to the internet fine and print to the same network printers that the windows users can't. i'm a bit stumped, anyone got any ideas? Andrew PS - i won't make any remarks about windows v macs
  3. Hi I'm having problems accessing external hard drives and memory sticks in vmware fusion. I'm running vmware on a mac in Mac OS 10.5, when I run xp on a virtual machine I click on the usb icons at the bottom of the window to connect external drives. The drives disappear from my Lepoard desktop, but I still can't see it in My computer in XP. The drives are formated for windows too. I've check the VMware settings and they appear to be set correctly. Does anyone have any ideads, because I'm very Andrew
  4. A driver is stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway. Nothing has moved for half an hour when suddenly a man knocks on the window. The driver rolls down his window and asks, - 'What's going on?' 'Terrorists down the road have kidnapped Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling, David Miliband and Jack Straw. They're asking for a £10 million ransom or they're going to douse them with petrol and set them on fire. We're going from car to car, taking up a collecton.' The driver asks, 'How much is everyone giving, on average?' 'Most people are giving about a gallon.'
  5. Hi I asked this question (in around about way!) on another forum on EduGeek. I would be grateful for more opinions. We are putting in a new Mac Network over the summer. 160 mac in total with an xserver at it core. We will be using Terminal servcies for SIMS and additional 30 windows users (pupils) on the network. This is due to the Tech department using some Windows only software. Although they are keen to move away from it to Mac software in the future. I should also point out that the windows hardware to be used doen't have much life left;) The school's inital idea was to have a seperate network for tech using existing hardware to run the small network to support them. The only issue being that users wouldn't be able to access their home folder on Windows network. As we are purchasing a new server to handle SIMS terminal services, my suggestion was to use the new Windows server to link in the Tech network. So if they needed to users could access their files on either Mac or PC. Our supplier has suggested that it would be best to have two windows servers, one for SIMS and the other for AD with a new RAID system on the Windows side and have AD manage users. I just wanted to see want others thought on this. As another Edugeek member has said as we will be a majority Mac network it would make sense to have OD mange users. And therefore is there any need for AD server? Can I just have the windows users connecting to the Xserve and OD? Andrew
  6. Hi thanks for your reply. Our supplier has suggested that we have active directory to manage all users accounts and home folders, even though most users will be Mac based. What I couldn't understand is why we couldn't have it the other way round (mac server for home folders and open directory to handle users. Andrew
  7. Hi all I am looking for some advice to see if the following is possible. We are having a nice shiny new mac network installed over the summer:D. We are putting in na ew xserve and a AD windows server to support a handfull of windows clients and vmware/dual boot macs (and of course SIMS). We are also looking to use some of older windows laptops as Internet resarch workstaions in some classrooms. The plan is to install Lunux (Edubuntu) on to these, to save costs, give a variety of OS and to have more reialable software;) My question is can I authenticate these Linux workstations against AD? So that they can save research data to there user areas and then access it on a Mac or PC? Any advice or pointers greatly appreciated:) Andrew

    New Mac Network

Hi Just thought that I would update you all. Tuesday night the Govenors decided on a new Mac network! Lot of the staff are really keen (there a few who are worried about learning a new system). Thanks for all your post and advice. I looking forward to a busy but fun summer! Andrew
  9. Hi Had problems this morning with pupil not being able to access their home folders and their ranger profile not running. After much headache I manged to get it running again and they now can access home folders and ranger profiles seem to be ok. Only problem is I'm not sure what fixed it! I have rebooted and when I restarted the server a Error message popped up regarding LAN Ranger: "Unable to open the file P:\Applic\Ranger\RgrShDbConnections.tab The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Delete this file and try again. The Ranger Licence Server will need to be stopped before this is done. Be sure to start the Licence Server afterwards or users will not be able to log on." I did as the message stated and once this was done the pupils no longer had issues. But.... i'm still getting the same message! And It doesn't appear to be running in task manager! I'm also geting a user enviornment message when I logon on to the server as administrator! It says It cannot find the user profile and loads the default profile instead. I'm getting new servers in the the summer and I can't wait! Anyone got any ideas? Many thanks Andrew
  10. I'm the same, I'm on my lonesome! Slightly less workstations though (175). It's lonely but very busy!
  11. Hello I'm a Network Manager at school in Southampton. I started in August 07 as a temp to cover the then current Network manager's leave in September. I had no IT support background, other than intrest in computers. I learned a lot from the Network Manager in the first two weeks, and then on the eve of his two weeks leave he quit! So what was only supposed to be a months contract has turned out to be much more! I found Edugeek when looking for answers to some problems I was having, and found it very useful. I have just started to posted too. I'm just in the progress of upgrading the hardware at the school (replacing all the desktops, servers and laptops - staff and pupils) so its challenging but fun! I have to say I never enjoyed a job so much! Andrew Network Manager.
  12. I will give that a try Monday morning. many thanks Have a good weekend!
  13. It was the IP address! Thank you for the help with that. Andrew
  14. Hi All I've been having a problem with a new HP Officejet Pro K5400 network printer. We got it in January for the History dept. They have been printing fine until last week when every document they send they get nothing and the print que says Error Printing. It's installed on a windows server running windows 2000. I've tried printing directly from the server and get the same. Also tried reinstalling the printer and the driver and get the same. And also been trying to set the printer up on the teacher's laptops so they can print directly to the printer, but I get a message saying that it can't find the printer on the network. The really bizarre thing is that I can connect directly to and print successfully over the network from the Apple iMac in my office! Anyone got any ideas? Thanks Andrew

    New Mac Network

Thanks for your replies. Most reassuring:) One of the main concerns is SIMS. I've proposed that we run vmware on the macs so that we can use SIMS, but have heard that it can slowdown the SIMS database? The Head has picked up on this, and I have suggested as an alternative that we use some of our existing PC as SIMS workstations. The Heads only concern with this is getting staff to log on to another machine to do the register, especially when they don't all do it now with it on their laptops. I know that some of you do the same (ie PC for SIMS) has anyone done the VMware for SIMS access?

    New Mac Network

Hi All I'm new here, and this is my first post. I'm Network Manager at a catholic school, and have been in the job since Aug 07, and new to the School IT support stuff. The network we have is on its last legs, pc, laptops and servers are over 4 years old, running xp and server 2000. I've been asked by the Head here to put together a proposal for a complete upgrade of everything! (with the exception of cabling and swiches which was done fairly recently). We've been working on it since October and I've got quotes from RM, a local supplier and a Mac reseller. The school has been deciding how best to raise the money but now its time to make a choice. I've suggested that we go completely Apple Mac, for all staff and pupils. I'm a Mac fan and i think they would be perfect for a small school like us with just over 400 pupils. Most of the staff like the idea, but I have a few who are unsure. The only problem I can see is staff training, which I feel can be overcome. I was just wondering what the members of Edugeek thought. Many thanks
