Hi All Currently doing a search for this, just wondering if anyone else has come across this? Got a user with a brand new Windows Laptop, Windows 8.1, Office 2013 that can't print from Powerpoint or Excel. No issues when printing from Word. The issue occurs when printing to to a Network printer. You can select print from menu, you get to the point where you can change printing pref. But once Print button is pressed (the point where you actually send document to the printer) you get a Error Message stating Powerpoint/Excel has stopped working. Anyone seen this? Andrew

Hi all I'm a plex user at home and love how easy it works. It got me thinking that it would be handy in school too. A central media server for Videos downloaded, TV recordings, Films etc for various uses in school. I know that we have the relevant licenses to show films etc in school, but I have a question about digital copies of DVD's the school owns. Where do we stand with this? Also does any other school use Plex as their media server? Interested to know your thoughts. Many thanks.

We run it for a term and it was a nightmare. We did it at lunchtimes and had loads of grief. Pupils arguing, running mod clients, cheating. Wouldn't recommend it, created loads of extra work. If you are really keen, look at the edu version, seems to solve a lot of the issues we were experiencing.

Pearson Active Learn - Website Trust Issue
webby74 replied to webby74's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Attached screenshots. We only have Impero filtering web traffic then LA. We have Impero set up to filter the room and other computers in the room are fine, just 6 or 7 PCs -
Hi All Our Science department use Active Learn for assignments etc. Using it for sometime with no issues, but today some of the computers are coming up with a Privacy Error. For example on Chrome you get "Your Connection is not Private" message telling you that the attackers might be trying to steal your info from https://www.pearsonactivelearn.com You can click to proceed to website but it doesn't run correctly and pupils can't work. Also get a similar message on Internet Explorer on same computers. Its seems to be computer specific not the user, as user can log on elsewhere fine. Tech Support at Pearson suggest clearing cache, but that had no effect. Anyone got any ideas? Webby74

Hi all, thank you for all your replies! Interesting comments regarding 802.11n vs ac too. We have considered Meru, but the pricing just doesn't compare. Andrew
-
Hi Luke, Already speking to your colleague Graham, and he has given us some very good pricing. Just after some experiences of Ruckus in use. Andrew

We are planning on installing a new wireless network, and currently looking at Meru and Ruckas. Having a look on here and now we have the pricing, Ruckus seems to be well in in front. We are preparing to go to governors next week and my LM (and myself) would really like to speak to a school who has a Ruckus system and get their opinion on the system. So who has a Ruckus Wireless Network? Andrew

Hi all thanks for the replies... The plan is to reinstall mac os on the server, so this will be a fresh install. The fresh install will be on two new 500GB drives which will be set up as RAID 1. Not sure if all the suggestions would work with this plan.... soveryapt: Your suggestion of cloning onto a drive seem like a good plan. But looking into this, the Xserve has three hard drive bays, so if I buy two new 500 GB drives and install them into the empty bays, is there anything stopping me from doing the following: Boot to install disc Launch Disk Utility and configure the two new drives as RAID 1 Install and configure fresh install on new RAID, leaving existing drive as is Once install is complete, reboot and select old drive via ALT key on boot up. Then when work is carried out just boot to new drive Thanks again Andrew

Hi all Looking for some ideas... We run a dual system, Mac and Windows and we are having the two systems integrated in the Spring Half Term. This is being done by external contractors when they come in the upcoming half term holiday and install a shine new windows server. Now long story short. The school, for reasons that I won't go into here, are insisting that the work is done in this coming half term, the same half term I am away on holiday. My holiday was booked and organised months before the work was scheduled. The last few months have been a nightmare with planning this work, my discussions though line management and SMT about doing the work when I am present...nightmare. Anyway, I am getting side tracked, I said I wouldn't go into it ... At the end of the day the work needs to be carried out at this time and the IT Tech here is more than capable of overseeing the install. The problem I have is that part of the work requires the replacement of the single SCSI 80 GB drive in the Mac server, the installation of two new 500GB drives, creation of a RAID 1 mirror and the reinstall of Mac OS 10.6 Server on the new drives. All of this needs to be done prior to the engineer on site and after school finishes Friday. Now I have the experience in Mac so its a job for me. Usually if I wasn't on holiday I would come in Saturday and get some overtime. The other option is to stay late on Friday night. I would like to try and avoid this. So my questions is this: Is there a way I can complete the work prior to this on one my evenings I'm scheduled to work late? And still have the existing configuration working until the half term break? One idea suggested was to install the two new drives and configure them separately from the existing drive. Would this work? Would it be as simple as installing the new drives and just selecting the drives to install the new OS install on? Then selecting the old drive to boot from until the work is started? Does anyone have any alternative ideas? I'm confident on installing Mac OS Server, but just want some clarification on the hardware side and any issues this idea might cause. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Having a weird issue with Dreamweaver 8, and yes I know its old :roll eyes: Pupils are creating a website and working away with no issues. The problem arises when they next work on the files. They go to their network home folder and find that the html files have gone and there are .tmp files in their place. Although these files aren't named the same as the original html files, but weren't there before. Just seen this first hand. A pupil logged on to a computer goes to his network home folder and only gifs etc there, plus a .tmp and no html file. He takes me to the computer he was on earlier in the day and logs on, goes to his network home folder, and the homepage.html is there, and no .tmp file So far we have been recovering via backup, but this is obviously a workaround rather than a solution. I don't know Dreamweaver that well. Anyone seen this before? Cheers Andrew

Censornet does provide the block list update, but unfortunately it often fails to update as the LA block the update.

Hi All Its been a while since I've posted on Edugeek. I visit lots, but now looking for some opinions. We are currently testing Lanschool and Impero, and we are very impressed at what Impero can do and does everything we need. The only thing is cost, the quote I've received is over my budget. I'm just trying to see if we can achieve the same set up for the budget I have. Presently we don't have any classroom/network management software (other than one AB Tutor station and Apple Remote desktop). We do have Censornet for Filtering the internet for pupils. We also have the internet provided by our LA, which is filtered at their end by Websense. My thinking is we give up Censorent and let Impero do the work of filtering the internet on top of Websense. Websense covers most stuff, but Impero as far as I can tell, can take over the role that Censornet does in school. Currently all we use Censornet for is disabling internet to users/rooms, controlling what and when pupils access on the internet, and blocking games sites. Do you guys use filtering on top of LA provision? Is then any drawbacks I might of missed by losing Censornet? Other than gaining Impero. If I do this, the cost I save on Censornet will cover the additional cost of Impero. Thanks for your opinions in advance Andrew
