Hi cheers, there was indeed Exclaimer running, can't say I'm familiar with it, but if you've heard of it and it's also on our system in stands to reason it should be popular enough to have a few tutorials online. Cheers for the nudge in the right direction.

Hi all, Just got a new IT role which effectively is taking duties away from an outsourced IT company and building an internal IT team, so as it stands I hyave no one to bounce questions to so hope you can help. Set my self up with a new email address today via the companies exchange server (2010) which went fine, sent myself a test email, also fine. When I opened my email I saw there was an automated signiture, which has obviously taken some details from my AD user mainly my name and job title. I'm just wondering, how to I edit that signature, I can find lots of tutorials on how to create an automated signature in exchange by creating a new transport rule and using HTML code, but when I look at the new transport rules on the server there are none listed to edit? Where is exchange pulling this information from and how would I go about editing it if required? Hope this makes sense, cheers in advance.

As said it was like that as I arrived, though I'm pretty sure it's like that for redundancy, or something to do with access to finance information being kept totally separate, it's never something I'd given a second thought to, you say there is no point "these days" what was the point in day sgone by and why is that point no longer valid?

Good Afternoon, Like a lot of you I have two networks in the school, my curriculam side and my admin side. MY curriculum side is 192.168.1.0 and my admin side is 10. IP range so I'm fine with that. Basically I'm looking to expand the scope on my 192.168.1.0 range to allow more than 254 addresses as I'm approaching capacity, the problem is I'd like this as none destructive as possible as the network has been configured well before I arrived so I am only moderately familiar with and being a school there is little room for everythign going down the pan whilst I fix the kinks. I've read things about re-subnetting and super scoping etc but am undecided on the best action to take. As it stands at the moment I have 2 DC's, a TMG server and 190 or so clients on my 192.168.1.0 scope, as well as things like printers, IP CCTV and IP Doors, I also have a trust between my admin and curriculam network for SIMS access and it's affecting that which is making me the most nervous. Is there a way I can expand my scope without then going in and possibly having to reconfigure everything on the network? Cheers in advance

What seems to be animportant factor in all of this is no one has come on to tell me how great they are and how much it has changed their school for the better...which speaks volumes..

Good Morning, A teacher has asked me to get a quote on some iPads for her class (maths) The rough cost of this looks to be around £9000. By default I think this is a bad idea, I'd be much happier getting a new set of notebooks in, which would cost roughly the same and be a lot easier to integrate into the network, as well as a HOST of other benefits, how ever I'm aware that I'm apple-ist. What is the general opinion out there of having ipads in the classroom, I have never yet met anyone able to give me a good reason why apple is the way to go aside from "they look good" "they are shiny" "they are modern" "they don't get virus'" "they don't crash" However...I don't care how they look, they DO get virus'...but even if they didn't neither do my school machines...they DO crash..and even if they didn't, neither do my school machines. You guys are usually on point so would love to get your opinions on the matter. Cheers, Liam

I've been on with the fellows at the councils ICT filter today, they have made the required changes and AOL seems to be working ok now for those who haven't tried it since. It would appear it was a block on http://aolcdn.com, and I have been informed access should be ok for all schools, this has fixed both the missing CSS file and the email problem.

Not good, that means you can't even have a nice cup of tea while you wait due to your terrible water.....I feel worse for you than I do for me, if it's stil down tomorrow I'll DHL you some tap water.
-
Well here's hoping those running the content filter get back to me asap, the panic this has created is absolutely crazy, they never seem too swift to respond though when ever I have sent a query regarding the filter. I've ran the test on the mail server as mentioned in the previous post and that has checked out, so it seems the problem must lie with the filter....lancashire only...racism!
-
Thats somewhat of a relief, as I've said I've emailed the guys running the filter/proxy, so I'll repost back in to this thread if I hear anything. If anyone manages to crack it, if they could posrt in here that would be fantastic, thanks everyone for your responses.

But when I click the basic connection method the page is just black text on white and the formatting awful, as per the screen shot, does yours look the same or is it ok. AOL.co.uk looks pretty much the same as that.
-
I've already done pretty much that, I basicalyl stripped everything back to suicide levels, everything allowed, everything on low, still no joy, also I'd be surprised if the same browser settings had been changed on every persons browser in the school, quite a few members of staff work on stand alone machines and the aol problem started the first day after half term after workign fine the day before we broke up. I have another thread asking people in lancs to try and it seems someone else has the problem, or at least i hope so........ Who the flip uses AOL anyway!!
-
If you could keep me in the loop and see if your problems mirror mine I would really appreciate it, I've still not heard back from the council just yet. I've checked the updates on and rebooted my proxy server, I've stripped back all my browser settings to let anything and everything through and still no joy. Every other website seems to be fine, just AOL uk and its mail.

Hello all, I'm just wondering if anyone in a school in lancashire who hits the lancsngfl proxy could test AOL.co.uk for me, aol.com works perfectly well? When I attempt it, the site looks like it has no CSS file, it's just white with black text, photos and some blue links, also if you try and access aol email, the progress bar just stops two thirds of the way accross and hangs. Could any of my fellow lancashirites please try this for me, I don't hit our schools proxy server so I'm confident that it can't be down to that, I've emailed the people running the lancs web filter but have had no reply just yet. If you get the chance to try an email you can use is [email protected] and password - goldpen23, the account and password are throw aways so abuse at your leisure. Or if anyone has any idea why all of a sudden I wouldn't be able to access aol.co.uk or it's email service then I'm open to suggesstions, cheers in advance.
-
Well this is a pickle, are either of you in the Lancashire region, I'm just wondering if it's down to them, the member of staff hits our proxy server, I have a direct line out yet we both have the same problems, the counties internet filter is the only thing we have in common.
-
Well that's a massive blow because I have no idea at all what could be causing this...are you able to access the mail box or just load the login window? What browser are you using?
-
Not sure which category to put this in, but usually everyone is helpful as heck so I have a quick favour for anyone willing ot help. One of my members of staff is all over me about his aol mail. if I go to AOL.com - News, Sports, Weather, Entertainment, Local & Lifestyle, the site loads fine. if I go to AOL.co.uk the site looks like it's missing it's CSS script If I attempt to access email, the bar moves about two thirds along and just stops, I've tried this on several different machines with the same results, how ever the member of staff is adament that it works perfectly well for him at home and it must be our system, I've logged all the actions on forefront when I log in and everything looks fine, but the blame is still being pointed at out network by the staff member. Could someone please test the two sites and tell me what they are getting, if you have the time could you also try logging into aol mail uk. [email protected] password - goldpen23 this is an abolsute throw away account and password so I have no issues posting the details of it. Any help and feedback would be appreciated as I cannot find any news what so ever and don't have access to any machines off our network at this time. Cheers one and all

This is all down to the users, you could buy any of them, they'll all work fine and all serve the purpose you require, how ever if you have a teacher who likes to check things around, take it home, lets the kids on it then it will suffer more damager, another teacher might keep it plugged in 24/7 therefore you'll suffer battery problems. As long as your staff are aware of proper laptop care then you don't really need to worry about which model, you're probably over thinking it a little. The teachers will be happy as they have shiny new laptops. The only answers you'll get on here are peoples personal opinions based on which brands people have used before, some people will love dells some people will have had nothing but problems with dells, and so on, if you really can't decide just go for the most cost effective option and send me some money, our nicest laptops are 7 years old, our PC's are older than that and are maxed at 2GB RAM running with IDE Hard Drives in, cases and components so obscure that any hardware failure is a death sentence and they weigh more than the moon. #firstworldproblems

Out of those four I'd be inclined to go with the lowest price, as I assume your school will too. They will all have the same warranty they will all have the same messing when it comes to getting a warranty repair if required, the one thing I will say is that in my experience DELL laptops have a nice power connector, it seems sturdy and doesn't seem to get lose or wobble no matter how much it is used, a faulty/lose power port seems to be a growing issue espcially as people tend to not take great care of laptops.

Good Morning Everyone, Last night I was attempting to install an update for SIMS (Patch 17822 [861-861]) in the same manner that has always worked every time before, and I can assure you all no changes have been made to the system since the last successful update, and all end users are blissfully unaware of problems as SIMS and FMS continues to work fine. When I launch Solus, what I think can only be an error message pops up for about a third of a second before the main solus windows loads, it's too quick for me to read any of it. Solus see's the update but when I click next to download it, I get the following error. The digital signature file for 3.61.861 to 3.61.861 17822 Patch.ZIP was not downloaded correctly. The web server gave the following error The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. This error occurs if I try and apply the downloaded upgrades, or if I untick the box to apply later. The internet in the school is absolutely fine and all users were logged off when this was attempted (I tried again this morning with users logged on and the same message occurs) I have logged a call with out support company this morning who were completely unaware of any update being available, so while I wait for those guys to get back to me I thought I'd try on here. Thanks in advance for any help.

What you should do is go to an apple store with it, walk around pretending to use it, see if you can get a member of staff to bump into you a bit, drop it and blame them, they probably deserve it.

There is nothing I like more than fixing things, and I've had countless hours experience with hardware repairs...fixing an ipad screen was one of the worst things I've ever had to do, you can just tell from the get go that it hasn't been built to make it easy for you, I'd just pay the little extra and get someone else to do it, minefield of glue, easily breakable clips, easyily scuffed panel and sticky pads and tape, send it away and put your feet up in my opinion.
-
Thats a Bingo, luckily the support company had a record of the admin unser name and password which meant I was able to give the user supervisor access, and hey presto. At least now I can stress the importance of me having top level logins for SIMS with school management, so I can ressolve issues like this as and when they arrise in future. Thanks for everyones help today, and hopefully people who have this problem in future have a nice clear answer to that specific error message. Cheers.
