iOS 7 App Store licence management- "Coming Soon" - WHEN!!! ???
cvl4 replied to cvl4's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
At last - I have not needed to buy any apps recently so have not logged into our VPP account for a while. Why can't they update their web page!!!!! Thanks for letting me know -! Caroline -
According to the Apple UK Education site The App Store Volume Purchase Programme now offers institutions the ability to assign apps to users while keeping full ownership and control over app licences. Institutions purchase app licences through the VPP website, and can use their MDM solution to assign apps to students, teachers and staff over the air. Students can enrol with their personal Apple IDs without providing it to their institution, and apps are placed in their purchase history for self-service download, or are installed automatically via MDM. Apps can be revoked at any time and reassigned to other students. In addition to iOS apps, VPP now also supports the purchase of Mac apps and even books, so students can be provided with all the tools they need to get their work done. but it says "coming soon" - my question is does anyone have any idea when!!!!???? This year? Next year? Sometime? Never? Apple (United Kingdom) - iOS 7 - Education

Have been using Meraki MDM for about 6 months now. Ever since iOS 7 came out have been experiencing issue where devices appear to spontaneously loose the Meraki management profile and become unmanaged. I am fairly certain this occurs after the user updates the iOS version on their device. Nearly every device became unmanaged within a few days of ios 7 comming out, sine then some devices get re-enrolled and then the same thing happens again. The latest has been when iOS 7.04 came out. Not all devices drop out some have upgraded several times and never dropped out of Meraki. Some of these devices have been supervised with Configurator other's are staff owned devices that have never been set up with configurator. Have been in touch with Meraki support several times over this but so far no joy and I feel as if I am the only one seeing this issue. anyone esle experiencing similar with Meraki or other MDMs ?? Arrrgh !!! It's driving me nuts!!

cvl4 replied to cvl4's topic in Educational IT Jobs
In answer to several people who have queried the fixed 1 year term - the post is initially for 1 year but there strong likelihood for whoever is appointed to stay on after that - dependent of course on the outcome of the restructuring and their performance during that first year.- 4 replies

Hi Am I the only one or does anyone else get a lot of grief administering It's Learning. Every academic year it's the same story - it takes 2 to 3 weeks of reporting errors and chasing up calls before finally we have managed to get the new academic year synchronised with SIMS. I won't go into details (would take too long) but last year our school ended up publishing a letter in our school news letter from It's Learning apologising for all the trouble and grief they had caused at the start of the year and it looks like we are heading for the same this year. I AM SO FRUSTRATED!!!!! It's not just at the start of the year - we have at least one major bug that has been officially recognised on their support site over 2 years ago - but still no solution! Are there any VLE's out there that work. For example Fronter - if we moved to them would it just be out of the frying pan into the fire! They also use SIMS VLE export I beleive to synchronise data between It's Learning and SIMS. Is that where the problem lies? It's Learning always try to implicate SIMS but so far it allways comes back that the problem was their end. Lynchpin (anyone using this) certailny is an improvement on the direct synch option we had before - but still lot's of issues. Caroline

embc mail filtering and encrypted documents
cvl4 replied to sparkeh's topic in East Midlands Broadband Consortium (EMBC)
Sparkeh Hope you got it sorted since contacting support? I have used Mail Marshal to successfully create rules to get around this problem for regular senders / receivers of encrypted documents so I know it is possible. -

Hi sparkeh Yes - we have been using it for successfully for the past 2 years - have you downloaded the latest version of the instuctions posted by Dan Broad on EMBC - the original version(s) had some omissions/errors. -
Closing date now extended to Monday 14th November. If you know of anyone suitable in our area please give them a nudge. We are happy to consider candidates with less than a years experience or those who have recently completed an IT Support related qualification and are looking for their first post.

Thin Client / VDI schools in East or West Midlands
cvl4 replied to cvl4's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Thought I would just provide a brief update. After careful deliberation we decided to go with Cutter - they have been absotutely brilliant. I would highly recomend the company to any school considering Thin Client. -
Not that I know of - you could check with James at Leamis - but I doubt it. PS this is a while ago I now see - did you ever find an answer? Caroline

Dedicated Desktop in every room would be my choice - Once they got used to it staff now prefer this. Far more reliable. We are no longer replacing the staff laptops - some staff have grumbled but most have accepted the situaion. With VLE, SIMS learning Gateway and remote access there is no real need for laptops except for key staff.

3 ICT suites each with 36 PCs Library suite 32 PCs 1 Suite with 24 Pcs 10 PCs + 10 laptops in Learning Support Classroom Teacher PC in every classroom 730 ish students - SLT and myself find this is just about adequate - yes there are times when the rooms are empty but because of the way the timetable works at other times you will get at least 3 teachers fighting over 1 room. Teachers do have laptops at home - they no longer bring them into school and we are not replacing these as they die, can't afford to for starters!

Hi We are considering investing in thin client technology at our school . Are there any schools out there in the Midlands running Thin Client systems who would be willing to allow our ICT coordinator and member of SLT and myself (Network Manager to visit and see how your system is working first hand and maybe talk to some mebers of the teaching staff for their views? Anyone with experience of Precedence, Cutter Project or DataSpire? We are a 11 to 14 South Leicestershire High School and with aprox 750 students and 40+ staff - we wouldbe especially interested to hear from similar sized schools. Caroline Lucas / Network Manager Edy O'Connor / Assistant Headteacher

Hi I think Russ might mean NEOS IT in Worcester NEOS IT Training went on their "windows 2003: Network Services course (3 days) it was excellent lot's of hand's on experience. Easy to get to by train or car from Leicestershire and I stayed in an excellent B&B near the cathederal and 5 mins from Neos - very reasonable rates They have reduced rates on some of the courses for schools - just ask Caroline

Workshop? has one been scheduled then?

Same here! Why can't they just add a proviso when mailbox is created that if not used after certain period say 6 - 12 months then the owner of the mailbox is notified and the site admin then if no response then the mailbox is deleted. It's no use comming up with all these explanations and excuses, this problem should have been identified as a risk factor early on and a system put in place. I am some un-impressed - anyway must get back to work - there is just me here I have no other help and over 250 PCs and 750 students and a curriculum and admin network to manage.
