I have attended Cisco training and we use Procurve switches. I found that the concepts are the important thing. Procurve CLI is similar enough to Cisco that you should not struggle to apply the same logic. Of course, some commands and features are proprietary Cisco - a good trainer will explain this. I found that the standard Chrome Gopher does not give you any more information than is available in the admin console, though it does aggregate it nicely into a spreadsheet for you. So unless you go premium, no you don't get log in / out times, just a list of session times and a corresponding list of most recent users.

Sounds useful. It actually might be worth revisiting for us. Rightly or wrongly, I got the impression from the engineer that they prefer to avoid IDex identity implementations if possible.

We came from Lightspeed - that did have a client to pass identity info to the web filter. Functionally I suppose it's similar but there's more components to using IDex than a client that directly communicates with the web filter; it's a separate service installed on the DCs. Our Smoothwall engineer advised that a logon script would be a better option for us. Hence my advice to discuss the options

No they don't have the equivalent client, but a number of other options are available to provide identity. The fall back is a log in option on a block page, and you can control the timeout. You'd be best discussing the options in the design stage of your install.

Nice. I have had a few people raise a concern about our ability to wipe their entire device via Google Device Policy, as we have enabled MDM. I promise we won't do it (unless they do something to upset me ). Looks like we may be able to ditch that requirement now.

I did advise this, but (a) it was not as easy (cheap!) to get FTTC and (b) as it's purely a box ticking exercise then I don't think requirements will be properly assessed until the day it fails. Hi All. Just looking for a bit of advice around back up connections. We have a leased line (200 M) as our sole connectivity at the moment, via our Smoothwall UTM. SLT are looking for a cheap, "ticks a box" backup option, i.e. ADSL. This is to allow access for staff to Gmail and other essential cloud services should we have a failure of the main link. Obviously in this scenario, with the reduction in bandwidth, we'd have to put additional manual measures in place, e.g. blocking access for pupils, blocking streaming services, etc. That's something I can write up and deal with on the day. Here's the question: we have the option for the ISP to set up a VRRP setup (i.e. transparent to us), alternatively we connect the secondary connection to our Smoothwall and configure the Smoothwall for load balance / failover. I'd be interested to hear what you would go for, if you think there's any advantage of one or the other, or if you think the different setups have little practical difference for solving the problem. TL;DR: Smoothwall load balancing or VRRP FTW?

@Oaktech - would you be able to PM me some details of your pricing for UniFlow SMB? I'm disappointed as we have had a quote for it and it's working out at £1000s rather than £10s! I had got the impression it was considerably cheaper and it would be a good way to give our staff follow me printing with our existing Canon MFDs.

If anyone has any available (or knows where to get them at a reasonable price), let me know. Happy with used ones, as long as they work.

Support have offered the option to go up to the VPS hosting level for a dedicated IP, the cost of which is too much for us and overkill for a single website. We don't necessarily need a dedicated IP, but it seems that there is no segregation of adult content on your load balancers. I get that this would add significant admin overhead. @vidahost @Zakah anything you can do before we have to look elsewhere?

@vidahost Our school's new public facing site is live on shared hosting and looking good. Unfortunately the hosting shares its public IP with some websites with adult content. This can be problematic for web filtering when we are serving our site over HTTPS; all sites on that IP end up tarred with the same brush. Do you have any IP addresses that you only use for public sector hosting plans? I'm thinking similar content is unlikely to be found on any institution that's going through your public sector solutions offering: I appreciate this is probably an easy question to ask , and a difficult one to answer. There seems to be a lot of FUD around this sort of thing. A similar thread popped up on the ANME site a few weeks back. This one mentioned "Wand" (sic), others pointed out the Wonde service is legit, if you use that service for data sharing. It would be great if someone affected could take the time to clarify what's actually going on.

You can use free Smoothwall Express or pfSense to do this pretty quickly. Performance might be interesting but either of them run on minimal resources.

Finally got round to doing this. With the help of support it was relatively painless to transfer in the domain. One snag - I was unable to use the automated system as it viewed the name.area.sch.uk domain as a subdomain of area.sch.uk. We've had similar problems with the Norton Safe Web service before; it blocked the whole area.sch.uk as one school had been flagged as hosting malware Just the DNS records to replicate now before the LA remove our records from their nameservers!

@tomgrindle - what do add-on / extension do you use for RDP on your Chromebooks?

No, the SA password is the same as it has been for years. Just waiting on support for a response. We had a migration to Server 2012 / SQL 2014 not too long ago - wonder if it's something to do with that process.
