Same here- very good laptops

Well I have the best of both worlds. I love my job in IT but I have been a Special for the last 3.5 years and I love that too. However I wouldn't want to be a full time Police officer - the pay, shifts and paperwork just aren't worth it!

Well in the year since I started the thread things have moved on a bit. We haven't replaced any laptops but we have offered staff iPads instead but the uptake has been pretty poor, which did surprise me a bit. All classrooms have desktop computers which are attached the IWB etc, and we are placing more in staffrooms and department offices which seems to be well received. I think the laptops will die a death of a thousand cuts as staff realise that they aren't going to be replaced no matter how much they complain to their HODs! I for one will be glad to see the back of them.

No but we have had a demo of one that is very similar, but the name of which escapes me at the moment! Our finance director is very keen on it but with all the options including the SIMS integration it was close on £4000 to buy. After that there is an annual maintenance charge of several hundred pounds a year. How much is this system?

I would suggest you actually speak to people that actually have a CC4 network rather than people who "have heard about it..." And maybe visit a school that has it to see what you think. I came from my last job which had a a vanilla windows network (actually lots of them as the company had 200,000 employees!) and I have had no more issues with my current CC4 network than I did on that one - in fact relatively speaking, less. CC4 did have quite a few issues when it was launched (we were an early adopter) but these were sorted a long time ago and I can't remember the last time I had to make a support call. I happen to like the facilities the system offers, but hey that's me. As for equipment - well like anyone who is spending money you should shop around and haggle. We happen to use RM Ones as our standard classroom PC because we have found them to be extremely reliable and not poor quality at all. They also fit our needs in terms of resilience and footprint. Having said that we have just bought a number of Lenovo C345s for our 6th Form study area, and RM didn't win the contract to supply our new wireless system - net-ctrl did! In short, do a bit of research - avoiding the evangelists and the haters, and do a cost benefit analysis. You should then be able to see what the best way to go is.

Yes they work fine although I had to make a few tweaks to the Smoothwall box.

I love Eurovision Not the music mind but the kitsch and cheese and politics! It seems unlikely that we will win it again any time soon but you never know. . I don't think it costs millions to show it as its put together by the EBU but if you win it can be expensive to stage it. Rumour has it that when Ireland won it twice (or was it three times ?) in the 80s that it nearly bankrupt the state TV company!

The details are very vague in my head but to get some of the better deals when buying MS licenses the company who sold them to you are supposed to install them too. The license belongs to you but its a way a getting a better price. I suspect this is what is going on here but I could be completely wrong! I would get clarification and the costs for the reinstall. I'm not sure if you could just pay the difference between the costs of the licenses - which could be much cheaper than paying them!

We have a Paxton Net2 system and it works very. I can't remember how many numbers our cards and fobs have off the top of my head though. I'm not quite sure what your concern over this was? Like you I'd like to automate the creation of users and Paxton have made noises about integrating with Biostore and that may have even happened by now. I guess AD integration would be the ideal scenario

We had exactly the same request from our PE department about a year ago and after trialling it for a while, we decided to go for Groupcall Emerge. Its worked a treat and PE love it. It was very easy to set and is easy to use. PM me if you want any more information Edit - We use it on iPads and don't have any proxy issues but the devices need to be able to connect to your SIMS server

My reading of the MS website is that only extended support is available for ALL of the Server 2003 product range. Fortunately hardware isn't an issue as all the servers running 2003 are VMs

I had a feeling that would be the case - much of the software will need to be re-installed by the suppliers, so I will have to allow some money for that I guess. Then it begs the question whether to skip 2008 altogether and go straight to 2012? Hi All I have a number of Server 2003 SP2 32 bit servers that I am considering upgrading to Server 2008. Now my understanding is that I cant upgrade to 2008 R2 as its 64 bit and there isn't a cross architecture upgrade path. Some of these servers have software that I really don't want to have to re-install (or pay others to do) so is there any real benefit in doing an upgrade to 2008 32 bit? Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received! Thanks Steve PS - They are all VMs

For the purposes of your wireless network I'd just generate your own. There are plenty of guides and if you have a CA already its even easier

I just find the whole thing sticks in the throat a bit. The subscription model wouldn't be so bad if I thought it was actually for for money but the software is bloated and the support terrible. We have CS5 currently and I don't see us buying into this anytime soon.

And no doubt the support from Adobe will be appalling as usual

We have ours on a single VM. It has 4 cores and 8GB of RAM and has run fine until the last patch. CPU usage has never really been an issue (until now obviously) but SQL Server will gobble up all the RAM it can!

Currently using Backup Exec 12.5 with a D2D2T setup. We are moving to Cloud based backup in the next few weeks and I'm looking at VEAM to backup our VMs but I'm finding the pricing a bit hard to get my head around!

Be prepared for a lot of frustration setting these up and keeping them going. We have around 50 macs and an Xserve and they really can take up a lot of your time. Deploy Studio is very good though and free!

Yes indeed they can. I have one that works splendidly.

We have about 1000 devices and we've only just upgraded from 10 to 50 meg, which is absolutely fine for us.
