Hi there, Does anyone know of any software, preferably free, to convert video formats? I need to convert the .Mov files on my camera to .3gp so I can play them on my phone. I had a look on t' net but all I found was rubbish. (Oh and it's the videos of my baby daughter... I know what you are thinking )

I start the pupils balances at about £2 then add 30p per week with a cost of 10p per colour pages. B/W is free though I limit the size of any single print job to 40 pages (to prevent "accidents"). I also restrict the printing of certian web pages (i.e. google) and a few pritners cannot print out direct from the internet. I also block the printing of unsaved Word documents as a tentative method of stopping printing too much garbage or "Naked granny pictures". This works quite well. Our Art and DT departments have their own printers which are not charged though the head's of department get a print out every term of printer usage to make sure that the printers are only being used for Art and DT. Works quite well. The only problems I have are people printing out photos/posters for school events or when some one prints mulitple copies of their coursework becase there was a mistake on 1 page

Apparently about two miles from the exchange. The Ali thing is due to a leg that was put in years ago when there was a copper shortage (40's?). I was told this by one of BT's engineers (not the one's on the phone the helpfull one's that come on site) and a couple of other people have been told that the physicall cabling to site is a load of rubbish.

We've got a consultant in doing some research for us. We can get business broadband they seem to be pushing a company called Chess which is supplying Easynet. Though unless we get a new line install I'm not sure how it will help. Sumply switching supplier won't make much difference I would have though unless you go for a leased line product over 6 Meg where they guarantee the speed.

Alas we are an Indipendent school on theedge of Clumbar Park in Nottinghamshire... so no LA and a long way from the exchange. What is also not helping is the dodgy cable installed by BT! Apparently there is an aluminium leg somewhere between us and the exchange. No ADSL2 yet but we are trying to find out when that will be installed.

Right bit of a stupid question here but I'm going to ask it anyway. We are currently runing ADSL Max here. I've done various tests when the school has been empty and generally we get about 3.5-5 Meg downloads. We are currently looking at what options are available to improves this speed. We are a long way from the exchange which is a problem. One of the things being suggested is a 2 Meg leased line. Now as we are not currently uploading much it would seem to me that, whilst the external contention rate will be less, this will actually be slower. It there some really obvious thing I am missing here? I am aware that you can put in faster lines (i.e. 10Meg) but only enable a small portion (say 2Meg) but this makes no sense to me. Help?

Sorry for the delay, @sukh - ACL's are fine, at least "everyone" has read permmissions and file and share level. @jamesb - No I have not (it's not configured which is the same as not). However the script is part of the users AD account NOT GP. @DrPerceptron - I've get "Legacy Login Scripts" set to hide but not Login Scripts (for some reason). I have however got it set in the user settings and I know that they are not being appled becuase I have not enabled "Allow Cross-Forest User Policy and Roaming User Profiles". I might wait until Friday (Our pupils leave Wednesady and Thursday's the Support Staff Christmas Lunch) and then enable the cross Forrest GPO Processing and see what happens.

Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the Office Form (Or possibly "behind the red door".... ) but I plumped for here. When Office 2007 was released the fist thing I did was download and deploy the Office 2007 Compatabaility pack from Microsoft on my machines running Office XP. Predicting, correctly, that some pupils would "acquire" the software, save their documents in 2007 format and try the excuse of "the computers here can't open it". Last year I migrated all the machines here to Office 2007 but like an idiot I forgot to remove the compatability pack first. The other day I thought it might be nice to tidy up and remove the compatability pack. This was a mistake. Removal of the compatability pack removed all the file associations for docx, xlsx etc etc. Even though I had office 2007 installed the computer didn't know what applications to use to opne them!!! Does anyone know a way to set file associations through GPO's? If not I would suggest removing the compatability pack before installing Off2K7!

Kind of answering Jamesb and DrP... If I log in to a machine in domain Y using a domain X usernmae I just get the standard desktop. My home drive appears (\\serverX\users\usernameX) If I go to Start ==> Run ==> \\domainX\sysvol\domainX\scripts\scriptname.bat I can see it and run the script. The script runs fine and all my drives appear. Now whislt I can manually run this for me (pain that it is) for normal people it's not really an option. Also I've tried FQDN's for the script path and in the scripts themselves.

Tried that as well. No joy. Actually I don't think that a GPO will work. All our business users are in the same OU yet I have about 5 different scripts for different people dependingon what they need to access.

Might try that later as it's going to force me to impliment the cross forest processing of GPO's Still don't see why it's not executing as part of the login!

Didn't work. It looks like the script is not executing rather than a problem with the script itself. As I said if I browse to the other sysvol folder I can see the script and execute it and ir runs fine. It just doesn't run automatically. The Home Folder maps in OK as I have set up DNS records for the servers in the oposing domains in each domain. I did notice that I get the error 1109 detailed here. Whilst I get what it is on about I don't understand if this is the problem as the logon scrip isn't part of a GPO it's part of the users account. If it can map the home folder why can't it run the login script?

I have recently set up a trust between the two domains at our College. It seems to be set up fine, the security seems to work and I can log onto either domain from any comptuer. The problem I have is that when I log using an account in domain x from a machine in domain y my home folder correctly but the login scripts doesn't execute, thus I have no other network drives. If I browse for the sysvol share and the login script I can execute it manually with no problem, I don't know why it doesn't execute manually. Help.

It's OK. I just wondered if there was an easy (preferably cheap) way of getting it. As the answer seems to be, No, then I'm not going to invest too much time in it. Cheers guys.

One of the teachers here uses a tablet PC and really like the Windows Journal. Thinking it might make a nice alternative for the standard IWB software I was wondering how to get hold of a copy. I notice it's installed as standard now in Vista but as my machines are XP SP3 that's not helpfull. Any ideas on how to get a copy for XP Pro? (You can't do a straight copy of the Vista version either unless you need to do something other than copy/past the program diretory ...Plus I would guess that might be a bit naughty.)

Personall using MDaemon here. Easy to set up plugs into Outlook if you pay for the connector. Nice web interface (not perfect but good enough) for all accounts. Links in to AD so account creation is easy and it doesn't attempt to do terrable things to your AD Schema. Been using it for a number of years now and I've had nothing particularly massive to grumble about.

Anyone know what the error code "0x35" is for windows scheduled tasks? I run a number of scripts at vairous times to shut down blocks of comptuers sometimes they have this error. Given that they seem to work I'm guessing that it's to do with a computer not being on when the shutdown command runs. As it can't run the whole of that script successfully it generates the error code. But that's a guess and I wondered if anyone had an answer.

Sorry to ask this. Anyone got any links to the chairs with gliders that they have? I'm pusing for replacing all the chairs in one of our suites next year and I'd like to get in early.

Now roughly speaking I did that. However I was wondering what space limits people actually had. The reason being that a few people are butting up against those limits and I wanted to know it either I need to go shopping for some NAS or I need to tell people to stop saving so much rubbish. Hence I wondered how much space other people allwed their staff and pupils. (ours have nowhere near 1Gb each though I have quite a sizable shared area for people to save departmental stuff)

Right the Health and Safety Deamons insist that there are propper "fully adjustable" operator chairs. However I would quite like the pupils rolling round the room like they are on dodgems (and the kids here are 13-18 ). Anyone know what I can and can't get away with? Preferably with some kind of link to a governement website. For example can I take the wheels off them all?

Hi all, I am just curious about something. I'm assuming that most of you rund disk quotas to limit the amount of disk space taken up by staff and pupils. How much of an allowance do you give staff and pupils? Also what are you using to back it up?

If I were to manually delete all the Host and PTR records for the PC's on my network are they going to automatically be recreated the next time a computer starts up and queries DHCP for it's IP address. My DNS seems to have got a bit random. I have a number of duplicate addresses in both the forward and reverse lookup's. An interesting example is the entry I just deleted. PTR Record for "English2" IP 172.16.1.12 has just recreaeted itself. "Associated A record I hear you cry" (possibly). Well there is currently no record for English2 in the A records (I delete them earlier just to see what happens when the machines get switched on to experiment to find the answer to the above question) and the reserved IP address for English2 is 172.16.1.11. Any suggestions?

Choose the wrong domain/try logging in as admin staff. Generally I don't want to give them ideas, or the opportunity to try things.
