  1. We use moodle for teaching and learning, however we want to replace our intranet with something else, mainly to host pictures and videos on (I don't like moodle for this, and our moodle is hosted externally so less control). Alot of replies which is good, and nice to know the free version of sharepoint should suffice for our needs, however I guess it wont work under Windows 2000? Would it work under Windows Vista? Any modules specifically for what we want to achieve? Not interested at all in using sharepoint as a learning platform or a VLE, so that side of things wont make any difference, I just thought it would be nice to use something other than frontpage and notepad to manually edit htm and php files!
  2. Don't worry about it guys - dabs can do a HannsG monitor for less than £69 which is also 19", so a bonus and with cheap delivery, and it doesn't seem you can match it. Thanks for trying though!
  3. It sounds like a daft question, but I guess we're a few years behind everyone else. I figure it is used for web sites/intranets etc, the latter of which I am pondering replacing our's with. Is this software going to do the job for us if we are just looking to replace our Windows 2000 intranet server (literally just a few html/php web pages) with this? We use moodle for the teaching and VLE side of things, and I was thinking our intranet could be better utilised to serve our vast repository of photo media and growing video media. Is this the right route to be investigating? I see that sharepoint services is free; what exactly would we need to pay for to get this running? Is SPS3 sufficient for what we would want to do as described above? I may seem a bit naive but I see this being mentioned quite often and never really caught on to what it actually does and whether we could get use from it. We have a schools agreement which I notice has CALs for sharepoint.
  4. hm.. dabs can do us £71 on that monitor with £3.40 delivery! It doesn't necessarily have to be 19" - are there 17" alternatives (even if it is a different, but reasonably reputable brand) with a similar spec (DVI-D)? As long as it's bigger than 15" there isn't too much of a problem. We'll also need the cable as well as I know alot of DVI monitors only ship with a VGA cable, and the DVI cable would have to be DVI-D to DVI-D (cheapest we have found is £4).
  5. Any luck Simon? We are looking to buy one now so just need to get the best price!
  6. Will just be the 1. Got a monitor that went bang so it will need replacing, question is with what (always comes down to cost here)! Monitor prices have come down a bit in recent months so hopefully we may be able to get something a little better than what we used to!
  7. Looking for a price on a DVI monitor (not widescreen) and the necessary DVI cable to go with it (DVI-D). Looking at either 17 or 19", although cheaper the better, so small may be better. We've been quoted a HannsG 19" DVI monitor for £70 exc VAT so far. Not sure about ordering anything yet though - depends what prices come back.
  8. We have had 4 printers off them, and plan another one this year (to replace an older model). Their prices are indeed very competitive, and in the contract, if you find the cartridges cheaper elsewhere and they can't beat the price (providing you give them a chance first), you can buy it elsewhere (I think there is a bit more to it, but that's the jist); we have never been in that position as they have always come out cheaper. Support is very good and the printers themselves are also very good. Overall, we are still satisfied and continuing the use the scheme over 4 years later and will continue to do so.
  9. I've just tried it on our smoothwall express box: Weighted phrase limit of 70 : 105 ((images, sexually explicit)+sexually+are at least 18+at least 18 years of age+18 years of age) Well done smoothie! Gatt, do you have the commercial version? I'm surprised you have needed to add it to block if we have the free version and it blocks accordingly (this is just trying what was suggested on the register).
  10. Goes through all the preparation, then when it is just about to start the installer bit, it reboots and reports the OS is now corrupt and needs repairing.
  11. We've bought a Samsung R510 laptop that came with an OEM installation of Vista Home Basic. We figured we'd save some money and buy a laptop with this licence as we have a school agreement to upgrade these to Vista Business. Problem is, we only have Vista upgrade disks and not the full version, so can't boot from these, and it will not boot from an XP disk or give the option for an XP install in the GUI of Windows. There is no option to upgrade through windows anytime upgrade and putting in the Vista upgrade disk returns the message "Vista SP1 is already installed on this machine"! Short of zero-filling the hard drive, is there any easier way of doing this?
  12. It's worth noting that although the "new" 10mb customers coming from the 2mb upgrade package (M) are paying less than existing 10mb customers from the L package, the M package customers get less bandwidth allowances before STM kicks in. Still, you're basically getting the same speed as L customers most of the time and if you're not bandwidth greedy, for a few pound less each month.
  13. We've stopped getting OEM cartridges across all our ranges (exceptions are brand new printers and office printers where documents go out externally, as we need that reliability). Our 2600n printers (we also have alot) are some of the least economical, but count the majority of our colour printers overall, so we need alot of stock, and can't afford to run them unless we get compat cartridges. Generally the more you pay for printers the less they cost to run.
  14. All our machines are half-height and I can't see how 3 VGA ports would get on 1, unless it occupies multiple slots; still would be considering - what are these called? I guess the projector would need to be on yes, however we do have some computers which are only used when a projector is in use, and these are the ones I was thinking of. When teachers don't want to project their image, they tend to just change source rather than power off/on, so that mostly wouldn't be a problem. Still a fair point though.
  15. Something crossed my mind recently about why we don't utilise the "VGA Out" port on projectors. We use VGA splitters (as I am sure everyone else does) which creates more wired mess, occupies an additional plug socket (an problem where they're limited) and needs more VGA cables. I've noticed all our projectors come with a VGA Out port specifically for connecting an external display (such as a PC monitor) to output the same image like a splitter does. I'm concerned why none of our installations have the VGA Out port wired up to the faceplate (like audio, vga in and composite do). Am I overlooking something? Why do we use splitters when the projectors have this functionality included? We looked in to using VGA Y-cables (literally just a cable which splits into 2) but the signal quality was poor as there was no additional power (monitor and projector images where dim), so we dismissed this idea. Surely it's cheaper to use this port than to buy splitters where needed (we're talking PCs, not laptops) and would be alot neater?
  16. No worries mate - thanks for trying. If you don't ask these things you'll never know! Makes me feel better anyhow that it seems to be a good price.
  17. Need to get this ordered before the end of the day really, as currently the classroom has no projector! Looks like maybe the RM price is the best one?
  18. Forgot to say - the bracket is a fixed plate with holes in a fixed place, and we really don't fancy replacing it. I've attached a picture of it, so if you know what the hole arrangement is in the projector, hopefully you can see if it fits!
  19. Doesn't have to be that exact model - so long as it is XGA and some kind of lamp warranty!
  20. We need to replace one of our projectors which after 7 years has given up, and isn't economical to replace the lamp. Trying to keep some consistancy, we are looking for an Epson projector, with XGA resolution and some sort of lamp warranty (whether that be free lamp or lamp replacement). Cheapest we have found is on RM here, which is an XGA projector with a 3yr lamp exchange warranty. Can that price be beaten?
  21. They price hardware only - you would need to get the OS added separately, even if you have a microsoft agreement (I think the only exception is if you have a retail version of the OS and are transferring it, or buying a retail version yourself, though correct me if i'm wrong).
  22. Must be the excessive demand since this thread was started I recall Viglen having a unit similar to the RMOne (Omnino or something?), which looked nicer from the pictures, though I never did query the pricing on that. Similarly to Soulfish, we have never really considered Viglen as a potential supplier before, simply because there is that much choice of suppliers we never really felt the need! Do Viglen supply components and accessories (such as cables and smaller devices, the kind of stuff you would go to dabs/misco for), or is it mainly just hardware and specialist software?
  23. We have other printers besides HP. For instance, phphp says it only does hp printers similarly to HP's own JetAdmin, however ideally something that can do our brothers too (maybe konicas, but I don't hold a great deal of hope) Don't particularly want or need nagios, nor to install it just to get the printer consumable info Ideally, something that can be ran in a windows exe or a web browser. My hope was that there would be a simple (or at least, easy to use) script/program to input the ip addresses of our printers and that does it's best to grab just some basic info, including toner/ink levels. Am I living in cloud coo-koo land?
  24. Our's has just been paid and came to £8857! Did take a while to get the "all clear" mind - not surprisingly, and it'll be the same next year of course! How is the cost-per-client worked out? We have the OS, as well as office and exchange cals. We have renewed licences for 340 workstations (which on the up each year)..
  25. Any particular software you can suggest that doesn't come bundled with unncessary additions? PHPhp seems interesting but quotes it only works with HP printers. That is what I have used for a long time, but it is still eaiser and quicker to see an overview (especially when you have quite alot of printers)!
