When we moved into our new office (September 08), the first few weeks I put up large pieces of paper to block out the EXCESS sunlight, as there was so much coming in, that we couldn't see the screens from the reflection! We got blinds eventually, which are always closed because otherwise there would be too much! We have a reasonably sized window in our office room, and a huge window (covers 80% of one wall) in our workshop room which is where we get lots and lots of light during the day! Also got a window in our office door which points out to a huge window on the side of the school, which gets sunlight on the other half of the day.

Thanks Simon. Did you get anywhere on the bracket? If it all comes to around £200 (including cables) then we can go for the bigger screen, however at £175 we may be pushing it. Wont know though until we get prices for all items! Cheers!

Was that first thing today, or tomorrow?

Did you find one Simon?

Whilst you're looking Simon, could you recommend or search out some means of locking/protecting the screen from "vanishing in to thin air".. The area where we plan to place it is covered by CCTV and in an area which is reasonably well supervised, however we think it best maybe to seek out feasibility of this whilst we're at it. Just of curiosity, how much more is the 24" screen? Size is only a limitation where funding is concerned, so if we're looking at no more than say 15% extra cost, then it may be worth pursuing that. I know that they'll want the biggest possible (within budget)! As long as the whole lot comes below £200 (or thereabout) then we're ok. Is the 24" screen going to be a similar sort of lead time (1 month is quite some time away)? Is there no way to source elsewhere if other suppliers have stock (even if it costs a little more)?

We're looking for a 22" PC monitor (vga connectivity) that has a hard glass screen and can be wall mounted (to be fitted on a corridor). We'll also be needing the actual wall mount as well; any with extra security, like a lock, would be preferable, but if that can't be sourced, then a standard would have to suffice. The budget isn't particularly big (roughly £200 for the lot). There may be some slack on the size (21"?) if the cost is more than quoted. Alternatively, post the best price anyway and we can submit that.

Feature differences between Adobe CS3 and CS4 DW?
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in Educational Software
Tried that, she doesn't know! Like I said, the tutor on this course made this note and she has passed it on to me. Apparantly, the interface means it is more aimed towards professionals and that the kids will find it harder to use (and there are fewer, if any templates available in dreamweaver). Are any you using CS4 DW with KS3 with no trouble? -
Our ICT teacher recently went on a dreamweaver course and came back saying that we need to get CS3 instead, as CS4 for dreamweaver/flash is missing critical features! I have been unable to get any concrete information on what these features are, or even if they are just hidden somewhere else, however the tutor on this course seemed to be the one who made this claim. I want to know if anyone else has heard this, or even someone who may have upgraded to CS4 (or used both) who can say if there is any major change in there which would make using it difficult? Is there a list of features removed/amended somewhere so we can see exactly what has changed? I don't quite fancy running CS3 alongside CS4 (if we are even able to get hold of CS3).

Just revisiting this again as we'll be looking to put some costs/proposals foward shortly regarding this. K.C.Leblanc, do you know if the duration is a legal requirement? As such, is it written somewhere that chairs that are adjustable would be necessary only for prolonged (1hr+) usage? Does anyone who has standard chairs (not gas lift) find that small/tall students have any difficulty in seeing the screen/using peripherals? We have only ever gone for gas lift chairs in the past for IT rooms, so wouldn't fully know the extent of using standard ones (we do have a few standards in place of broken gas lift chairs, but (un)surprisngly these aren't favoured)! What costs sound reasonable for a class of 35 chairs? Sylv3r's £15.80 sounds very appealing, however not being a regular customer anywhere like this or looking to purchase in any close quantity to 150, I doubt we could secure a price like that.

Richard, You obviously have clear views about the complexity of programming languages which should be taught in schools. I noticed you mentioned you do this with your year 8 classes - is this because you feel yr7 would find the complexities of gamemaker (compared tp say scratch) hard to grasp (maybe from experience or assumption)? Is it the whole of year 8 or just the upper classes?

Well done for digging up a 2 and a half year topic. Seriously, I have been seeing this a lot lately.. can't people read the date!

That's a good point, and one we'll be sure to take on board if we attempt this. Although, if kmount has newer hardware and it wont work, that's sort of knocked me for six a bit!
-
Could we run that applet on a onelan box?
-
Gone a bit off topic :x I take it noone has even attempted it then? webman, I think your point is valid enough, and if there were to be an issue, maybe drivers or what not may be the only problem (although if fedora ships with any standard drivers, maybe it wouldn't be?). I suppose the only sure way to know is to stick the hdd in another machine and see!
-
Anyone attempted upgrading the hardware themselves (for those who have an old onelan box which wont support v6)? We have an NTB115 and it seems to be running a VIA C7 1ghz cpu with 256mb, yet the newer boxes only run Intel Atoms and Pentium DCs, so could it just be a case of spending a few quid on an Atom setup and moving the hard drive across? Essentially it's what's on the harddrive (the software) which runs the whole thing, and given the only reason we can't get v6 is because it isn't powerful enough to run it, then upgrading the hardware shouldn't be a big deal? Shoot me down if I am speaking out of turn or suggesting something which is frowned upon, however it just seems like just a simple way of sorting it, or is there a software-enforced limitation that means it wont upgrade from v5 regardless?

We have a digital signage system and have used the same template for well over 2yrs (not a good idea we know), and are looking to update it. Unfortunately, we have some very bad screen burn and are wondering what the best remedy is for it (such as having a plain colour showing for a period of time)? If the screen is plain white, you would be forgiven for thinking the burned template is the one being shown!

You'll struggle to get one with duplex as well within that bracket (and bear in mind, cheap printers tend to have higher running costs). Looked at LnL (lnlprinterweb.co.uk)? We have a few of their Konica Minolta printers (just recently got 2 of the latest 5650ENs) which are fantastic and have excellent economy, and come with network, within the price bracket you're looking at (£321 I think for the printer and starter (6k) carts). You technically don't own the printer, however we have bought one we leased after the 3yr period very, very cheap and it's still running. All parts and labour covered for the 3yr period too.

Does that mean that either 2mb customers will now pay the price 10mb customrs do, or that customers paying for 10mb will get a reducation to what was the 2mb speed, I wonder? I've recently cut a retentions deal with VM (on 10mb), however, with the recent price cuts already seen on 10mb, it is now not looking as good as it was just a month ago! Still, better than a kick in the face for those currently on 2mb!

Flash firmware on non-flashable HP P2015n
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in How do you do....it?
Well I have resorted to the DHCP method which seems to avoid it getting the wrong IP (setting a reservation for a specific MAC address); setting the IP as DHCP then saving changes meant it picked up the IP I set. Better than it not working at all I suppose. This has really put me off HP printers, especially the issues with our HP 2600n issues too! -
Flash firmware on non-flashable HP P2015n
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in How do you do....it?
Is it just a case of contacting HP support then directly and requested one of these modules? I assume you asked for 3 more when those 3 didn't work? Is this module a new formatter board to replace the existing, or to go in as well as the existing one, or something else entirely? It seems this printer has hardly been used, as we haven't been getting told about when the IP is getting "lost" - it happens so often they hardly see the printer working, so just ignore it! -
We have a HP p2015n and found that there is a firmware update here that is newer and seems to fix the problem of losing the static IP config. However, our formatter appears to be unflashable, as it says the 3rd digit needs to be 0, 1 or 2, and our's is 5 (also tried flashing it but doesn't update it). Now, what do we do from here? We have a printer which often forgets its IP and we can't upgrade the firmware because it isn't flashable! I have read somewhere that some have left it on DHCP then set an exception on the address it takes, hoping it keeps that one - I don't want to take that route. Will HP fix or swap the printer for one with flashable firmware or a fixed formatter? We only bought it in July last year so still under the standard 12month warranty.

That's a no Simon?

He did say 10Mb line though in the post..
-
How have you got that upload? I thought the 10Mb lines only had a 512k upload, and the 768k was for the 20Mb lines? Has there been an increase that I don't know of?
