We have had issues with our Presonus sounddesk for a while and it seems that Presonus do not support the pci firewire card(s) we have been using (all fairly cheap ones, sub £20) and only show the more expensive ones on their "tested and supported" list. What I want to know is, why should we spend at least double in some cases to get a more expensive firewire card and would that actually be better/more reliable than a cheaper one? What are the actual differences? I know the better ones have firewire "B" ability but the sounddesk does not to this would be a redundant feature. Should the cheaper, low-end cards be capable of running this or is there a reason why presonus note we need to get a "beefier" one?

Got a bizarre problem with our Buffalo bridges (Airstation WLI-TX4-G54HP) whereby they no longer link up printers they're bridging to the network and the orange activity LED on the printer doesn't blink (but the green "connection" LED does). Plugging the bridge into a computer works fine and plugging the printers into the network directly works fine. Same issue on different buffalo bridges and different printers, though the printers with this setup are the HP 2600n - and yes they are naff but this setup has worked fine for years! Only recent change is the upgrade to ruckus, however the bridges themselves still ping and communicate fine, and as I say link up with desktop PCs without issue so a bit baffling why the printers stopped working! Any suggestions?

We mostly use a single supplier that manufactures/refurbs the cartridges themselves and accepts their own empties back, plus even pays us for them despite the fact they're reusing them for us. Doesn't get much greener than that and keeps the costs rock bottom.

New Ruckus Install - advice/checklist/guides?
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in Wireless Networks
Thanks for this, but for someone who hasn't setup a vlan in his life it's a little bewildering Is it equally fine to get the system running first before looking at creating VLANs? Otherwise we may be pushed back quite a while it'd seem! -
We ordered Ruckus last week, due to arrive tomorrow however we're effectively starting from scratch, as our current setup is a mess of unmamaged linksys/dlink/hp WAPs on a flat network (we've bought a HP Procurve 2910 so we can implement VLANs). Does anyone know of some good areas to find advice and general best-way approaches, or perhaps even from your own experience? We don't know whether we should be looking to try and get a few APs in use first before looking to create a VLAN (got no experience doing this and no VLANs at present so should be fun)! or if we need to be getting this part done first before starting to configure the ruckus. One of the reasons for wanting to create a VLAN (besides being able to split the traffic) is to create a guest VLAN that is entirely separate thus more secure, although we don't know if ruckus's own implementation of this is sufficient or if we should still consider a VLAN for other reasons? Also, we don't particularly want to disconnect every AP during the install process, as it may take us some time (days/a week?) however would it be wise to do this or could we leave some on in areas where we wouldn't be installing a Ruckus AP until last?

Nor has the ability to filter the printers before showing a list of pending jobs, but I don't want to go on about that (however much we desperately want that ability)!

How does that differ to a network admin having access to sensitive documents on a day-to-day basis? I don't know for sure seeing as we have yet to upgrade, but I imagine papercut will have perhaps put in the ability for certain printers to not log a screenshot of the documents being printed, and if this doesn't exist I guess it may be useful to have this ability. But still in saying that it isn't really any different to having the standard level of access network admins have to certain areas anyway. If it causes a problem for us when we upgrade, we'll simply just omit the sensitive printers from papercut logging seeing as this feature (from a school point of view) is only really beneficial for logging student activity.
-
Just saw today that papercut was released (at last) and when I saw what this version brings.. well.. I am seriously impressed! Far too often we have students printing "Document 1" and "Untitled" and unless they are sending alot through of the same copy, it's almost impossible to trace who has sent the spam/rubbish on the printer. We're on v10 now so definitely I think time for us to move upwards, though still waiting after 2 years for the ability to filter printers in the print release queue before seeing a list of pending jobs, which is very important for us to be able to do (just thought i'd throw that one in there again)! But yes very, very good feature and it's why papercut is still one of our best, value-for-money purchases we've ever made

Our current phone system, a Panasonic D1232 super hybrid digital is getting on a bit now - I imagine it's probably around 20yrs old and has very little functionality that you would typically expect and take for granted on a more modern system. Just looking for some advice really on what others have or better, would recommend? We've been recommended the Avaya IP500 v2 which looks to be a popular choice, as are the generous array of handsets on offer. We'd be wanting to look to try and offload the current phone system (which has around 25 digital handsets) however the best price we have so far is £200+VAT all in and that feels a bit tight! The main struggle is justifying that we need one, and whilst features such as auto attendant and network integration sound good (for the IP range), it's not going to be easy to convince the HT to part with comfortably over £5k for a system that to the average person functions as expected.. receives/makes calls! Is there any useful advice we could benefit from having or indeed arguments we could use to help the cause? In a nutshell, would we benefit from upgrading to a new system, should we go digital or IP (or mixed), what systems are the most popular and can we expect more for our old one?

Squid/Dansguardian - pages not loading correctly?
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
cache_dir is commented out (unconfigured).. not sure if this can cause issues or not? Would it suggest there is no cache to clear then? I never thought about the HDD, but funny how it started "all of a sudden" rather than a gradual process. I wouldn't even know what process to use on linux anyway to test for HDD health. -

I know you have prob just copied that from google, but I noted on the opening post there is no such dir in the /var/lib area which is strange I thought. -

But it's been set up the same way for a while now and not had anything like this issue. Plus I still can't find how to clear the cache(!) -

Student proxy settings are configured to the squid/dg explicitly although I can't recall if the box initially was set up in this way or transparently (even though regardless of this, it had worked fine for the last ~6 weeks since I finally got it working in mid October). I also read if set up transparently it's very hard to then change it to explicit or vice-versa, if configured undesirably initially.. -

Internet is fine when not going via the squid/dg.. it'd be a bit embarrasing to have not checked that before making the post Staff don't go via this filtering box and have no issues whatsoever; when we flicked students over to the backup filtering (NED box), they then have fine internet too. -

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately the cache log file does not show anything before today and even then the messages I am not sure about. I have attached a screenshot of it below.. if it makes any sense! -
Got a bizarre problem as of this morning whereby no page will load correctly 90% of the time (if you constantly refresh, it may load it fine); the extent of this is practically no formatting, most images do not load and on Yahoo's home page, the result is shown below (as an example). Have rebooted the server and read something about sometimes the cache needing to be cleared, but I can't find where this is on our server (not in /var/lib).. this may not even be the issue though. Any ideas?

Got a rather annoying problem with the latest HAP rather than a stopper - whenever a user logs in they get this message. The logon goes through fine and there appears to be no other issues, and indeed it prevents logon altogether when an actual bad combination is entered (which obviously is expected). Any reason for this, particularly as it does actually log users on fine?

Bad idea - we have upgraded some of our 5yr old core 2 machines with better CPUs as these are now more cheaply available 2nd hand. What I don't get is, should the change go ahead, would it just affect brand-name OEM machines (HP, Dell, Lenovo etc) or even system builders like RM, Stone etc?
-
The proxy is LEA hosted (we have no control besides blocking/unblocking sites), but we decided to try and run it through our own one temporarily to see what sites it's accessing, ans it was the ones we expected which are already in the exception list. Doesn't really make any sense!

Noone else had this issue then?

Having some very frustrating problems trying to activate Cubase Elements 6 over the internet as it seems something somewhere in our filtered connection is blocking the access required for licensing. We've contacted steinberg who beyond giving us the sites they say it looks for, wouldn't offer any further help. We've added http://licensetransfer.elicenser.de, Syncrosoft, Home-elicenser.net, Home-elicenser.net etc to our allowed list, including the https variants and additional ones with the port on the end but nothing seems to be allowing it. We know it has to be the inet as we can use a bluetooth dongle to activate via a mobile connection which works, but is very faffy and unreliable. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues or could offer advice?

We're looking to upgrade from exchange 2003 to 2010 and from what I read here and been told, the current single domain certificate we bought will not be functional with 2010. Looking on godaddy, the other 2 options are "multiple domains" and "single domains with unlimited sub domains (wildcard)", both which are showing as being compatible with exch2010 but the latter is quite significantly more expensive. We use https://mail.schooldomain.com to access OWA but I can't work out which of these 2 we'd need. Would the cheaper multiple domains suffice or is there a reason why we'd need to opt for the wildcard one?

VLMC - it's still a buggy, barely useable alpha unfortunately.
