We tend not to use vanilla GPOs as it's CC4 and find in these cases applying a reg fragment is easier in the absence of a preset option
-
We recently acquired a bunch of keyboards with sleep keys on. Whilst we could log in to each machine and change the setting within windows, it would of course be easier to assign en-masse a reg fragment to disable this for us. Anyone know of the location within the registry this option it stored? It's the one that allows you to choose "Do nothing" when sleep key is pressed!

Pretty much that. The only other exception is when we opted to go with procurve brand consistency and changed out dlinks, netgears etc when money allowed but otherwise we just run them to death or until there is a justified need to replace with one that has poe for example (but to be fair most of them are no older than 07/08 currently). We have a full 48 port as a spare anyway and HP send replacements next day so we'd have to be really unlucky to have 2 die on the same day.

Thanks for the files you are sharing Arthur, going to save a lot of time! In your extras one, you have reg files for default templates and disabling updates - is this not something included in the MST config then (particularly the latter), or do we need to look at someone incorporating the reg files separately post-install? Can we not disable updates in the MST transform file?

Was going to post my own stresses with YfS but it seems it's well documented! Is it true then that any attempts to sign up post May 2014 have not been successful? I assumed the banner at the top saying "in a matter of weeks" was a recent addition and informed our staff that we should be able to sign up "in a matter of weeks", but it seems now that may need to be postponed.. to never? -
Moodle "unexpected cURL" error when trying to update plugins
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
the php-curl extension is activated and shows as enabled in phpinfo however it seems that it is a known problem related to certificates, but I can't seem to get the recommended workarounds working.. -
I am looking to try and update moodle over the half term however when I have gone to try and check the plugins I get an error: Unable to fetch available updates data - unexpected cURL error. Apparently this is related to certificates although when I manually add the certificate file in the location as instructed, and indeed apply the certificate on the server itself the message still shows. Just wondering if anyone else has had this and was able to work around it, or indeed whether this is even necessary (or perhaps even still present on newer versions) in order to actually upgrade Moodle?

[php] Can not open or read from file via command line php.exe
dgsmith replied to dgsmith's topic in Web Development
This was absolutely spot on.. it's something simple that I hadn't ever even considered.. I immediately assumed the most complex of reasons. Cheers -
We're going down the route currently of looking at changing our phone system and I am very taken by 3CX, but then our SLT have reservations about a system that seems too cheap and something which requires a lot of internal configuration (despite it looking manageable from the free version I have installed). The great thing about 3CX is their licensing approach by concurrent calls rather than extensions (i.e. there is no limit to extensions and no financial requirements beyond the physical handset). In saying that, I would really like the thoughts of a few using 3CX and whether they would still choose it if going down the route again of changing systems.

[php] Can not open or read from file via command line php.exe
dgsmith posted a topic in Web Development
I have a PHP file that is executed via batch file very frequently for live updating. This is a sort of "sync" file for reading/writing to a MySQL database. I am able to get it functioning absolutely fine when executed manually via a web browser (and my echo debug lines output the expected information), yet when I run the same PHP file via the command line, it seems to just not be capable of opening any file for reading, so the equivalent variables that are correct when executed on a web browser are blank when echoed through the command line. Is there a different way of handling reading of files when running a php script via the command line, or should it function exactly the same as when run via a browser? For instance: $k = "0"; $line = file("examplefile.log")[$k]; echo $line; The above will output the first line (line 0) of examplefile.log when run via a browser, yet in the command line it doesn't echo anything.. as if it's not able to read the file for some reason. -
With our exchange server, we were able to specify what name displayed when sending emails externally (so for me, emails from me internally displayed as from "Mr Smith" but externally they simply show as "David Smith"), however since the migration to O365 all emails just show from the standard display name (Mr Smith). Obviously we don't want to be changing the actual display names as these are relevant for internal network purposes, however does anyone know of the O365 equivalent to exchange's Simple Display Name feature?

Sorry to bump but just discovered this relatively new player in the market and wondered whether for education it's worth considering vs cubase elements? Ideally to function in a Windows-based networked environment, something which Cubase certainly isn't renowned for (to say the least)!

I am scratching my head trying to find what happened to the HP live chat? When we had a warranty query it was simply a case of launching the client and putting some info in, but now I can't find where the live chat "popup" area is, only an area that sends to me to a page that looks totally unfamiliar and says HP live chat isn't available. I can't even get the system to detect our products! Anyone used live chat recently and had the same problems? Seems they have hidden it best they can, then when you do find something it doesn't flaming work!

10% ebay fee on £870 = £87 less = £783 No paypal fee if cash If paid £800 then his argument is that he has saved you £17, but then as stated, a termination has to be raised, and accepted by both parties (and ebay, though generally it's an automated process). I wouldn't worry about your conscious as far as ebay is concerned.. they make way too much money to let that be an issue (10% imo is crazy), but then as also stated, if you didn't actually agree to it, then you should have forced the issue. For the sake of £17 out of what is a much larger sum, you run the risk (although slight) of ebay catching on, or the buyer not agreeing to the termination and you footing the fees, and not being able to exchange feedback. I always think in these cases do ebay actually check message history etc on random spot checks to see if the transaction termination is genuine, especially when they are set to lose not far off £100. Bit of a gamble imo.. if the buyer won it at the stated amount, and as far as you were concerned they came to pay that in full, then that is how it should be.

12x 900GB 2.5" SAS 10k drives and each blade has 2x Xeon E5-2450 v2, 2.50GHz with 64GB ram (and small flash storage). We queried about 15k RPM drives but apparently the 10k ones are actually as good as 15k ones (I can't recall the given reason, but the explanation made sense) plus they were cheaper and meant we could go with the 2.5" option and only use half capacity than the 3.5k version and use all of it.

We just confirmed our order for Visualization last week, to go ahead in the summer using a Dell VRTX. We were VERY impressed when we saw a demo of it, although I was very disappointed we weren't able to progress the order with the supplier who actually went out of their way to give us a demo, however it was pretty much sold to us once we saw it in operation. We went with 2x M520 blades and 12x 900GB HDDs (so basically half the chassis capacity). Obviously can't comment on the VRTX usability itself as it's still on order although the single point of failure internally has been addressed by Dell (unless of course you consider the chassis itself to be a single point of failure.. i.e. a fire!, as opposed to having the physical hosts and SAN in actually different locations). Not really an issue though with a decent backup solution in place, although perhaps maybe a little inconvenient if there was an actual fire and the whole lot was destroyed! We did say though that we'd have a lot more worries to concern ourselves with if there was a fire (and the backups would be on the other side of the school anyway). I would really suggest anyone to at least consider the VRTX, but ideally try and see it in operation. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, nor will it be suitable for all setups, but for us it certainly was (and the 40% cost difference vs a traditional 2x physical host, separate SAN helped)!

No difference when turning the switch on with the console cable already connected Technically the switch isn't faulty though.. it could be classed as user damage. Are you saying you just contacted HP and actually said the button is broken and they swapped it, no questions asked? Nothing in DHCP.. I don't even know if it's on the same IP range as our network, despite the fact devices plugged in to it work on our network fine Buttons themselves have been pushed through and/or snapped internally.. the pin goes straight through and no contact with a button is made (unlike our newish switches where you can feel straight away the small depression of the button(s). This is the older style of switches which uses a serial port on the actual switch end (our newer ones with rj45 ports all work fine). Nothing can be done via the console as it doesn't seem to be making the connection. the main thing is clearing the vlan configs though as currently we can't use all ports on the same network given it seems there is some vlan config internally that we can't get to and clear.

It's a 2600-8-POE. Can't say I'd feel entirely confident in shorting buttons on a powered up (and still functioning) switch though! I have tried several serial cables but none seem to produce anything on putty. In contrast, with out newer procures that use an RJ45 at the switch end, we can connect to the console on these fine (even when using a serial to USB converter). Not sure if the serial-to-serial ones need specific cables?
-
We have a procurve bought 2nd hand though with lots of config we need to clear. Problem is, the reset/clear buttons are long broken and connecting via serial doesn't offer much (and even then it'll probably be password protected). Is there any way to totally reset these besides the obvious approach that we can't use?

As part of our virtualisation project, we'd be looking to adopt a D2D2T setup however typically what spec would the server need to be to store the backups on? The advice at the moment is to go with a server that has 2x Xeon E5-2440 CPUs with 32GB RAM, for essentially what is a server to store our backups. At a cost exceeding £3k (although including controllers to connect to a storage library and 5yrs warranty) is this typically what you'd expect to be paying, or indeed is the spec suitable/reasonable for what it is and not overkill? Similarly, would you normally look to take an ongoing yearly support contract just for the disk backup server?

Sorry to bump this but it's come to my attention (when reviewing our phone system, bills etc) that our alarm system also dials an 09 premium rate number when set/unset. Did you successfully get this changed where you are? I have rang around a few companies attached to our system (service provider, monitoring centre etc) but none seem to either feel like they are responsible or know how to advise. With these things, does it tend to be that there is always a standard rate alternative or can it be hard-coded in the system and unchangeable unless the system itself is changed?

Did the update via TFTP and voila once the new firmware was on it had the upload/download button again, so I guess it must have been on such an early firmware release that the feature simply hadn't been made available then. All good now though!

It may well be that I will have to do this, despite the switch location being very awkward and nowhere near ideal for even connecting to any kind of computer/laptop device, but I can at least access it via the network. This isn't an older procurve though.. it's a 2810 model. We have other identical 2810 models, both 24 and 48 ports, and also 2510, 2610 and 2910 and have this button on all of them. I am just baffled why this switch doesn't have it in the interface, which is otherwise identical to the rest we have.

See image below - where the link should be is missing.. haven't got this on any other switch as the link is there, but I can't even see is on the GUI for this particular switch. Is there somewhere else where the link can be enabled (which would be bizarre if there were, but I am running out of ideas)?!
