Thanks James, but no it fails the same way - IE cannot display the webpage

I'm new to this Sharepoint thing and am getting a bit cheesed! After 2 days trying to get it working I'm sure I need your help. The system I'm working on is Windows 2003 server with SQL Express 8 and Sharepoint 3. I'm RDPing into the server and the sequence is: Created a Web Application which, when I Click on Web Application from Application Management, shows it as http://its/ Created a Site Collection using Team Collection just so I can practise. Clicking on Site Collection List shows it as URL http://its/ . When I try to connect to the site I get IE cannot display the webpage. In IIS if: Right click on the Default Website and select browse brings up the Under Construction page Do the same for the Sharepoint Central Admin site I get the login box and can login to the Admin page Do the same for the Site Collection ITS I get the cannot display webpage. The three sites are on different ports. Help!

Thanks heastaugh1. Sorry if the next is obvious. Do the clients show by client name or username or can you select? We use Ranger Remote and you can't show thick and thin at the same time!!!!

I can't see an answer to the point I asked about ABTutor. Sorry if it's buried somewhere. Using ABTutor in a mixed fat/thin client system can a single controlling PC, e.g. the techies' one, see all the clients?

Still not clear on whether any of you secondary schools have gone totally Open Office/Open Source and how do you handle MS Access and Publisher?

Right now I'm only going to be trialling wireless in one room, however I'm sure the powers that be will soon be asking me to extend coverage. In this thread there seems to be a number of offerings recommended, but just as an example, is it feasable for the single room coverage to start off with a single unit from Ruckus and then extend it? What sort of price is a single unit?

Still on the open source cost reduction bandwagon although the more I research it the more I feel uncomfortable about moving the wholeschool (apart from Admin with SIMS) over to Open Source apps. We are a secondary with 6th form and when I talk to teachers, mainly IT, I get words from them which say the curriculum is so geared around M$ Office products they couldn't get on with Open Office. In addition they say Publisher and Access are vital products in delivering the curriculum. Firstly if you are a secondary with Open Source applications (we use Windows XP PCs and 2003 server) do the teachers have problems with the heavily M$ Office biased coursework and support material, and, secondly, what products do you use instead of Publisher and Access.

We use Novus Networks at Novus Group Their technical guys are good and very helpful. Yes I agree with Ric about the cost of Citrix, although there is a rumour that they may be looking at Education charging. But I'm not holding my breath.

We use Ranger Remote Control (rebadged Net Support) but it can't be used with a mixture of Citrix sessions and normal PCs. This is a real pain in a mixed environment, on top of that even when setup to 'control' Citrix sessions it only shows the username of the logged in student, not the terminal name. This results in a not too careful teacher in one room takes control of a student in another. How does ABTutor handle mixed environments and does it display terminal names for thin clients. TIA

The Sun 7110 seems to be getting the thumbs up from everybody. I know we are running out of filestore and I'll have to do something about it. However I am a total novice in this area, how difficult would it be to incorporate the 7110 into a windows 2003 server environment.

I hear that MS are reviewing the Schools Agreement with changes anticipated later in the year - can't get a forecast. It appears they are under pressure regarding the 'any PC connecting to Windows server has to have a licence'. Let's hope they drop the 'any computer' in favour of 'those running an MS operating system'.

My half asleep assistant has just dug deep into the box and found the power supply to scanner lead, which is a more sensible length. My assistant is now making tea and sweeping the floors!

Be warned - we've just taken delivery of one of these units and the mains lead is a massive 37cm (15-ish ins in old money). I know companies are cutting costs, but this is taking cuts too far! I expect HP own or have shares in an extension lead supplier. It's actually not what was first observed. See correction post which follows

Thanks Michael. I'm not sure that's exactly what I'm trying to find out. Clearly I'm not explaining too well. Try again, thanks for your patience. What I'm trying to do is to produce a word document which might go along the lines of:- Project report for XYZ Project Bla Bla Bla To understand how the project is progressing see John's e-mail: here I want to insert the actual e-mail Once we have reached stage 2 we'll move the assembly etc. Bla Bla Bla End of report In the word document the embedded e-mail shows in exactly the right place on the page and appears an e-mail Icon with it's subject as the title. When the document is opened by any recipients, they click on the e-mail Icon and the e-mail is opened. When opened it appears just as if it had been opened by clicking on the original e-mail in Outlook. Hopefully that gives a clearer indication of what I'm trying to understand.

Sorry leco. What I'm trying to find out is how you embed an e-mail in a word document so that it appears as an icon. Does that help?

I've received a word document which has an e-mail embedded in it, i.e. there is the icon of an e-mail with its subject title part way down a page of text. When I click on the icon it opens the e-mail, which as it happens has itself got an attached word doc, but that's a lesser question! I'm sure it must be obvious but I googled it and can't get any sense. TIA

Not sure if anyone on this thread can confirm a bit I read somewhere but can't find again! Under the Schools Agreement as I understood it you had to licence every 'computer' regardless of operating system (MAC, Linux as well). Now the note I read suggested that Microsoft have changed the Schools Agreement such that you don't have to have CALS for boxes which are not running MS products. If this is the case then linux thin clients would not need to be covered by Schools Agreement - this could be a significant saving as the use of thin clients grows. The saving goes someway to offset the ridiculous price of Citrix!

As the planning starts for the next budget, the question of cost of MS licences has reared it's head. I've played with Open Office a bit and it seems fine, but using it across the whole school is another matter. I'd appreciate feedback on comparisons of Open with MS and any issues, etc. Does it work with SIMS? TIA

Having had the discussions about what is a release and when it should be released, has anyone actually installed it? We have to install it here because it's claimed it fixes a bug we raised in September, but, as always, I like to know someone else has successfully installed it before I take the plunge. So, if you've installed it was it OK?
