The LinkSprinter from Netscout is £300 and is great value for money - tells you which switch/port the socket is connected to and what distance and faults are. Just about affordable too.

These are instructions on how to get Youtube for Schools working through an ISA server. Can't vouch for it myself as I gave up on getting it working - seems a lot of effort for minimal gain. I was just reposting in case anyone else found it useful.

I recently used myTenders Procurement Home Page - myTenders to advertise a public tender - it meets advertising requirements and did get some very useful companies to express interest. Basic useage is free. Public procument is tricky and not just a question of asking your mates/preferred suppliers to quote. Seek advice from LEA if possible would be my advice or find out what your school policies are (what do you mean you don't have one!).

A couple of websites (Animoto - Video Slideshow Maker with Music and Prezi - The Zooming Presentation Editor) will only display correctly for staff - students get a text only page and the Flash video components don't work at all. Animoto bleats about wrong version of Flash and Prezi refers you to support. Flash 10.3 is installed and other flash-based sites work OK. Animoto support says "upgrade Flash" and I say "read my lips" and I'm waiting for prezi support to get back to me. However since this is happening with a couple of sites I think it may be more generic. Did Flash 10 to something fancy to permissions? Any insights from anyone gratefully recieved. We have same issue in Herefordshire - not a member of a grid, but use the Local Authority network to connect. We use Websence filtering, but it is straight out after that I believe, so can't think what 4OD requires to work. Your ?cdm=ak ploy works a treat though....

You may want to have a look at www.aviary.com - an online suite of goodies that includes music composition. Haven't used it in anger, but looks interesting.

Interested to know on what grounds the school was being negligent... Also, it would seem to me that either you are or you aren't allowed to post photos and to post images for up to half a term isn't effective if there is a CP issue here.

After a photo of a student was copied from the network and defaced, I have been told to remove all pictures of students from the network folders that students can access . This is on the basis that it is a child protection issue and that we are breaking the law by having photos of students available for students to see. These are photos of trips, special events, sports days, music/dance/drama performances etc. Apart from the work involved in trawling through the 30,000 images in 9,000 folders, this just seems daft and plain wrong. The misdemeanor is in the defacement, and babies should not be chucked out with bathwater. Anyone else has policies regarding posting student photos or comments on this?

We put in an RM CC3 network into our secondary a year ago. Various options were tendered (CSE,Viglen, bespoke using Class Server etc) and RM were the CHEAPEST with the most functionality. Cheapest by a significant margin! Telephone support has been excellent - e-mail support is awful (the choice is yours). Hardware prices are higher than availabe elsewhere, but you can't always get similar elsewhere (RM One PC has cables clamped internally with a screwed down cover so students cannot pull cables out of the back - that's worth something to me in support time savings). Sure, given time and effort you can do the same manually, but I want to get on embedding ICT in the school and not just making sure the little darlings don't trash the network and fixing GPOs... RM were pretty awful from what I hear, but they have listened to customers and CC3 has some great features and the basic system costs are not that great - you don't need to buy their PCs.
