So the store is (roughly) sysvol > policies > policy definitions, yeah? I ran the MSI from MS, grabbed the files, created the folder in sysvol and dumped them in there. Will check dates etc shortly.

Argh! I don't have that!! Am I supposed to do something after I've added the templates to the central store? I can see Windows 8 and 2012 stuff, but not that option. Is the problem that its 2008 R2 Standard?

Thanks, I've got that far...but am slightly confused as to how this helps me *blushes*. Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick of what I want to do.... I've exported the XML of my customised Start Screen using Powershell. Put it in a share accessible to all. A couple of my test users have picked it up but not others. As I've changed this GP locally to the machine, I want it to work on the other 15 machines but there isn't the option on my 2008 server to do this...

Ok, this it where I hold my hands up and say I don't know how to use it....I seem to have been able to last 6 years without it haha! So many guides on installing the damn thing, none on how to use it!

I'm getting myself confused here! ha! So, I've setup the Start Screen how I want it on my 8.1 enterprise machine. Exported the XML. So I have the file ready and waiting on a share. I only have a windows 2008 server. I've imported the ADMX files into the Central store and can see some Windows 8.1/2012 policies but not the Start Screen Layout setting one. So I thought it was a case of exporting the GP and importing it to the domain but i'm not getting very far. I can't find a way to export the GPO, i'm logged in as a Administrator. Have i made this up? lol

Is the boot to desktop option available in pro using GP?

I actually would really like to use the metro system. I think it would be awesome for our littlest users. Those who are saying they've run it successfully using just GPO's, care to share? So far I get a blank start screen and no way to get to the desktop unless I click around in the corner which seems to bring the button back.

Why, you guys have made me feel SO much better. As for the classic shell and the GP to boot to straight to desktop. I may be picking brains.

If you have....how on earth did you do it? The desktop part works just fine for me. It's the bloomin Metro Start Screen nonesense thats causing me a headache!!

oh! Now hovering down in the bottom left and right clicking bought up the windows icon, so that worked it stays after that. Reboot and its gone again. But thats no good for the kids. What have i disabled? EDIT: It doesnt appear in the Apps list either....

re-import it where? Sorry if im being dense.....i get myself into a muddle with certificates. Curricsvr1 is quite happily doing its bit. Curricsvr2 is the one with the issues. I just wish i had 5 minutes to sit and play with this stuff....

Nope, this is a very nice Dell desktop AIO. Windows 8.1 Pro x64.. Ok, so when a user logs on at the moment, I get taken to a start screen with no icons....so i can't get to the desktop. Slightly unhelpful. Even the keyboard doesnt help. The apps screen seems to have picked up what looks like my redirected desktop icons.

oh? How can the cert have been deleted though? Is this just something i can put back?

Well, what a bundle of fun this is turning out to be. So it turns out that to be able to edit the Start Screen easily, you need to install Enterprise and not Pro. I missed that bit. So has anyone managed to do this using Pro? Is there anything else this is going to effect (due to using Pro and not Enterprise)? I'm trying to decide if its worth just carrying on with Pro or start all over again with Enterprise....

Ah, I stuck them in the Central Store and think I see them now.
