One student went in and corrected the spelling of her name. For some reason, I got a bollocking for this and had to change it back to the incorrect spelling.

Any recommendations? Our archivist has decided to step from the dungeon (literally!) and move the current paper records to electronic format. Scanning the paper to pdf is easy but we don't just want to dump them on to a shared drive. We want something to catergorise the docs and allow searches to be done to locate the one we want. They want it to be separate from the MIS and library systems too. There are a plethora of DMS's out there; any experiences both good and bad would be gratefully received. Thanks.

My box has 120GB (RAID 1), with the last 15 years of my life on it and it's only used 70GB and that includes the o/s. Mind you I take my many photos using film (which go into my photo album) and I don't download videos. As LosOjos said, it all depends on what you want to keep. If I was keeping huge amounts of stuff, I'd have a small disk with the o/s and programs on and a big RAIDed array for my data. It doesn't matter too much if you lose the o/s but it matters a lot if you lose your data. I would also backup the array to external media; when my box shuts down it rsync's any changes to an external disk.

Do you have two keyboards and mice or a KVM switch? When I used to have two machines (with KVM) I always seemed to be on the "wrong" one when I was trying to do something.

I often find vi commands in the middle of quick notes that I'm typing into notepad. I get extremely pissed off that I can't highlight text, and click left/right together to get the text pasted to where the cursor is. Ctrl/C Ctrl/V is so outdated. I get quite pissed off that I have to double click.

We do lots of posters in OpenOffice (much the same as Libre). You might want to use the Gimp for drawing flashy pictures to use on your poster, but there is a lot you can do with Draw. I make CD & DVD covers using Draw and they look almost professional. (I say almost, because the double sided printing means things don't quite line up when I cut it out, so there is usually a thin strip of white down one side.)

The least work option would be to use your existing Moodle. V2 has a very nice editor (IMO). Not strictly a wiki, but Joomla can do all that you want and is easy to setup and administer. Once you get into it, there are loads of plugins available to make it do more.

I would like to get a coffee machine for work, but I think those pod ones are pants. I've tasted them and I find it to be just as good as Douwe Egberts instant. I have three or four of those at work a day, and a couple of days a week, a triple shotter from Caffe Nero. We have one a couple of minutes walk from the college. I'd love to get a proper Gaggia for the office, but we can't stretch the budget that far. At home, I use either the Moka pot or the French press, depending on how lazy I am. The first school that I was at was looking at putting in an internet cafe. I suggested they forget the internet part! Unfortunately, they decided there were better ways to serve the local community; they built a sports hall and the locals can use it after hours.
