A few questions for you to consider: Which people/roles make up SLT? University seniors, eg Vice Chancellor and their direct reports? Heads of School? (Humanities, Science, Engineering, Languages). Heads of department (Geography, History, Maths, Physics)? Heads of research groups (Quantum Physics, Biophysics, Astrophysics)? Academics tend to think they're fairly autonomous and have often been allowed to operate that way. How many devices do you actually have control of? ie Are they bought and managed by your department? Are they bought with research grants and therefore may not belong to the university, but to the person the grant was awarded to? What about visiting academics - do you fund and provide machines for them to work on our do you allow them to connect their devices to your network? I know what I'd like to happen and you should define your desired ideal outcome, but there may be several steps on the way and you might have a long path before you can get to locking down all machines that access your network.

At my last school I set up dhcpserver.de on the admin PC as a backup as we only had a single server to run all roles, so it was part of my emergency plan. Once we replaced the file server with M365 my main emergency plan was mobile phones as hotspots!

That's one of the complications of moving to cloud based servers. Your major expenses move from capex to opex. I did it with software years ago when we moved from buying perpetual software licenses to ovs-es. Wasn't difficult in my school as the bursar was completely onboard.

It's so bad and so long I'm tempted to change default browser to something else and hide Edge from the start menu and toolbar. Probably more effort than getting rid of the first run experience, but it's really off-putting

And yes, they have to pay the increased energy bills, the 1.25% employer's National Insurance uplift and the increase in salary due to the uplift in national minimum wage for any employees on that (probably quite a few IME), salary increments, plus any public sector wage settlement out of that 3% increase. When I was a governor our staffing costs (salary, NI, pension contribution, sickness insurance etc) gradually increased from around 75% to 80% of the total budget. And yes, the only way to save money was to not replace staff when they left and try hard to recruit inexperienced teachers!

It's possible that in some limited circumstances you could justify this. However I think there are better ways to do it than have posters on the wall. What happens when the child isn't in that classroom? You need a system for that, in which case you've got a system that works without having posters on the wall. We had a cupboard in the medical room with boxes for each child with a medical condition which had a photo of the child on them and any relevant medication inside. There were also photos on the inside of the cupboard doors. For information in the classroom, whatever system you use for registration should have the facility to store and show that information including photos.

I bought a similar Aeotec device. Partly because it outputs to a local device (not that I'm paranoid about someone setting my data, just don't want to be relevant on an app working) and partly because there wasn't a 3 phase version of the Emporia device when I was buying. All a bit irrelevant because I haven't found an electrician who's prepared to come and fit it. Having a new electricity meter fitted this week and they're going to put isolators between the meter and the consumer unit. Once that's done I'll probably fit the energy monitor myself. It's not complicated, but I don't fancy working on the consumer unit without knowing it's completely isolated.

In BIOS utility the only USB options I have are legacy USB support and xhci handoff. When I turned legacy USB off it didn't get beyond trying to load the files and reported a hardware problem. Xhci made no difference.

I should have said- I did turn off UEFI and secure boot and turned on legacy boot. I also tried (after earlier post) turning on and off xhci. I've also tried a PS2 keyboard and using USB 2 ports as well as USB 3. It does feel like missing drivers, but not sure how I'd check, where I'd fine them or how easy it would be to install them. Maybe I need to crack on with getting WDS set up and see if I can bypass all of the install options - although I've a feeling of the drivers aren't there I might just end up with a complete Windows installation that I can't use...

I've had a special request to install 32 bit Windows on a new machine to support some specialist hardware. I've tried various ways, but when I get to the Windows Setup screen the keyboard and mouse stop working so I can't select any options or click on Next. Keyboard and mouse work fine in BIOS and when I use a 64 bit install. I've tried a download from VLSC and the Microsoft media creation tool ISO download and get the same result. Any ideas?

What can you do without installing an MDM to restrict which wi-fi networks a personally owned device can connect to? I know you can force filtering by mandating installation of a certificate if the device connects to the school's wi-fi. But as far as I'm aware, you can't control what other networks a device connects to. For me, the options are policy and behaviour management, not technical. If I was running a private school (about as likely as me becoming Queen) I'd put the bill up by £150/year and buy 1:1 devices and then have complete control of them.

It's a bit bizarre - definitely an issue, but fortunately not one I'm going to have to fix. We have a shibboleth based SSO platform and some kind of federated AD. At the time I posted I was trying to work out whether it was our systems or Microsoft's. Looks like it's ours, but luckily for me there's a team that manages it [emoji41] And since we put a message on all the digital signage the constant stream of people to the office has slowed. It's only affecting usernames starting a to j, so I'm getting quiet time to do some work and my colleague in the office is being bombarded.

We're getting lots of users unable to login to Microsoft services. Anyone else seeing this? Most are getting "your account has been locked" and it was people trying to login. I've just been locked out of all my logged in services and I get wrong password error message.

Dehumidifier is often a good idea if you're air drying clothes indoors. If you live in a modern house that's completely draught proof you'll end up either living in a stream room or opening the window and letting all the heat out along with the water. If you live in an old house the moisture released from the clothes will condense on the cold walls and give you damp and mould problems.

Thread's getting quite long now, so just a reminder that these are student owned devices. Lots of options for preventing use of VPN/locking to specified networks if they're school owned - not so much for devices the school doesn't own.
