  1. We are just starting our budgeting season and I was asked if there is a web based software for it. Teachers and staff can submit their wish lists of equipment, software, books, etc. though a website. Then as an administration team we look at these and approve then add them into the budget. Currently she uses just one big excel sheet which is pretty much coded so only she understands it. Is there any procurement, purchase requisition software that anyone is using they they like? and maybe open source? How do other schools do it?
  2. I have a large group of profile folders that lost permissions or have the incorrect permissions assigned to them. I'm in the process of redoing everything but is there an easier way to give users permissions back to their files then going one by one into each of their folders and applying?
  3. I have a different view on this, I give them full access to the student shared drive and use treesize to view the folder once in awhile. Its 2014 kids do everything on mobiles they rarely use the share drive to mess around with. Kids delete things, move things etc... they are fully warned that its for short term sharing of projects, papers, etc. Its not on a backup cycle. In there I have drop boxes for teachers that students have read/write too. Really the only problem I have is sometimes they place minecraft or prison architect to, but a simple script that runs every 30 mins deletes exe/dmg/app files on the folder and home dir folders fixes it.
  4. fill in the blanks send as the admin user or you can try root in the send Unix command. dsenableroot -u adminusersname -p adminpassword -r rootpassword or send as the admin user dsenable root adminpassword rootpassword rootpassword
  5. you have Group 1 with members and Group 2 with the same members. Remove the members in group 2 then join WorkGroup 1 to WorkGroup 2. This should apply MCX's to each group. I have a students group with just student MCX's and the student group is joined to a group with most of my MCX's for all the users on my network.
  6. We have all Cisco small business switches and was just donated a meraki cloud managed switch. Can I use a SFP from one of our Cisco switches or does the transceiver need to be the same brand as the switch?
  7. Is anyone else having the issue of setting the default image for the background/wallpaper to always and it reverting it to often. I set our students background to our school logo in SL, just moved the MCX from often to always and there was no way to change the background... now with lion when they login they are able to change it. Is there a different com.apple.desktop.plist for lion or is lion smart enough to know there is no always option for it?

    Mac Server Rebuild

I have done this in the past also, The way I did it was take a iMac or other intel based machine, installed server, updates, services. Unplugged it from the network setup IPs, DNS, OD. Then imaged it. When it came down to the night I switched us just made an image of the old server, and took a backup of OD. Restored the "NEW" image from the imac to the server, restored OD and was done. Think that all made sense...
  9. We do in house only, I am a apple certified tech. We only buy the hardware apple care. Apple will send us parts overnight and most of the time we do not even have to return the bad parts. My 2 techs that work for me just use my account to order the replacement parts and we go from there.
  10. do you have the afp/nfs/smb home folder location ticked in sharing?
  11. mind posting a copy of your config to see it, remember to remove your passwords
  12. systemsetup -setnetworktimeserver time.apple.com be sure to send as root
  13. not sure if its the same with 10.3, but the smb options are under the share point tab when you click the shared folder under sharing. There should be a protocol option and select smb.
  14. For a younger student it would be better to setup a local user with a simple finder... This will make a user they click to login and only show a list of apps for them to use. This is what I setup in the k-4 areas of my school.
  15. Since the opening of the school we have been Mac based workstations and servers. I changed us over to AD when apple said they were moving out of the enterprise realm. When I seen 10.7 server in beta I was just shocked what they now call a server. RIP Xserve... After dealing with open directory freezing every other week I'm glad I changed over. Our AD server hasn't been rebooted for anything other then updates. I am looking into resara server though I like where they are heading...
  16. hmm let me test some things with WGM and the com.microsoft.office/word/pp. Something thats odd is the students profile on the network should have a documents under it. In other words the Studenttest$ as your pic 2 shows should have a Documents folder in it and this is where the default save location should be. Can you login to the machine under a local admin account and check under users is there a studenttest profile? There should not be...
  17. sure does, in directory utility open your active directory settings... click the down arrow for more options and untick force local homes. Now you have to delete all the saved profiles on the machine so go to the hard drive and the users folder and delete all the users profiles. This will force osx to use the network as the profile save point. edit- make sure you dont delete the local users homes only your network ones!
  18. Is smb turned on? And what setup is smb... Workgroup or PDC? And are you using you Mac short name or full client name?
  19. Do you mean a home directory or the save location when you file save in office?
  20. You could change the wording around in this package to suit your needs Policy Banner for Snow Leopard — ps Enable
  21. Hi Martin, I can post on my experience changing over from a full mac server setup to the windows side. I had some of the same issues as you and most of them were permissions based. First of all I didn't choose the dual directory "magic triangle" setup, it seemed like to many points of failure. I edited the active directory schema to all the apple WGM XML files so our domain controller issues the managed preferences. If your interested in this I can go further into it and also post the LDF file for changing the schema. Ok back to some of your issues, Can you create a file/folder in one of the folders apple loads into the home directory automatically rename it to something different? Just create a folder inside the library folder then rename does it give you a permissions error or ask for a admin login? Do this on a standard account. This will just be a simple test of the permissions from unix to windows permissions. Slow logins- What folders do you have redirected to the machine? Not sure with the "magic triangle" setup but make sure you at least have the cache folder redirected. I have a lot of the application support folders redirected to the machine also. The powerpoint issue taking 10mins then asking to save as is due to the users not having the correct permissions in the root folder of your share. In the root of the share there will be a hidden folder named TemporaryItems make sure everyone has read and write access to this folder. losing space on your server- Get TreeSize Pro its a program that will scan directories/home folders to see what is taking up lots of space. I run it about once every two weeks to look for huge home folders but it mostly comes down to me deleting iTunes libraries because students have sync'ed their iPods. Again if you do not have folders redirected the cache files/folders gets pretty large. .local- I never used a .local because I pre-read the issues, but if I remember right if you add the .local domain in the "search domains" in network preferences on the local machine it will search there before it goes into the bonjour .local search. There is also people adding the .local domain in the hosts file. Either way I guess fixes any issues with this.
  22. This is the same problem we had and the lpreset install would totally fix this. Lpreset runs a script that deletes all MCX printers before the actual MCX's from WGM loads. Try it out and let me know how it works for you. The link is posted in my first post on this thread.
  23. I'm not a huge fan of 10.7 downgrading is what I instantly did when I replaced 2 of our open directory servers over the summer. A friend of mine made step by step notes posted here wazmac.com/servers_network/fileservers/osxserver_setup/index.htm That would walk you through everything you need to know just starting out from DNS to file shares and home directorys. Stay away from the mobile sync its to clunky, logins take forever and fails all the time. Regular home directorys with some mcx settings is all you need.
  24. There is a couple ways of doing this, one is to remake the cups file which will reset all printers on the machine, so works just fine if you do not have any local printers attached. Take a clean image install all the printers that you want on it then copy and replace the following folder and files to the same directory on the other workstations. BUT like I said this will delete all printers once that file is copied and only leave what you put onto your clean image file. Copy this file /etc/cups/printers.conf Copy this folder and anything inside /etc/cups/ppd/ Make sure you overwrite the current files and restart the machine. If your having problems with your network printers like queues pausing or erroring out, replacing a printer, etc.... something that's easier then messing with the workstations cups. Look at installing lpreset. This deletes network print queues/printers and reinstalls any mcx printers. We have this running on all workstations 430+ macs. It runs at login so it will delete all installed all mcx printers and install the printer if that workstation or user has an mcx for a printer. This will not work if you installed the printer manually on the work station. sdunster.com/project/lpreset Well for my first post here I hope it helps you and anyone else
