Hi, I have been talking to Fluidata recently, thought that I would check on here to see if anyone else was using them Could I ask those who are using them, have/did you notice a difference in the lower contention ratio? They are currently advertising 5:1 for the Burst buy I think they said they have no customers (currently) on my local exchange. What routing equipment did you have installed? They are offering me at the moment either a Speedtouch 608WL or a Cisco877-M

Just spotted that Acer have launched the Aspire Revo 3610, has a Dual Core Intel Atom 330 processor - has anyone got one? Products

I got myself a r3600 and it runs Windows 7 OK. Just read that a dual core Atom 330 version will be released at somepoint!

ISA 2006 using half potentual bandwith
drewp replied to drewp's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Ok, so after checking a Win XP Pro client with IE7 speedtest.net thought the ISA Server are 14-15MB. So I think I need to change the question to IE8 on Windows 7 Pro slow through ISA 2006 Server. I have installed firefox on the Windows 7 system and i get the 14-15MB speedtest result as well - any one else seeing this in W7 with IE8? -
Hi, I have a problem with a new ISA 2006 Server which I installed over the Summer Holidays. Internet access appeared to be a little slow this morning so I decided to do a test with speedtest.net and I got 5Mb through our ISA 2006 - if I connect a computer directly to our ADSL router I get 15MB I did not do a speedtest when it was first setup so I don’t have a base reference to go from but as the test when directly connected to the ADSL router is much faster I know the problem is somewhere in the ISA environment. So far I have - changed the network cables changed the ports in the network switch updated the network drivers on the ISA Server stopped Websense Internet Filtering Service and re-run a speedtest ISA Best practices analyser does not highlight anything All of the above don’t improve the speedtests, I'm sure it's something in the ISA server Config but I'm a newbie to ISA Server and used the Edge Firewall Template to configure it. Server Spec is Server 2003 RC2, ISA 2006, Quad Core Xeon 2.6GB, 4GB RAM, 2x Intel Pro/1000 EB Nics, SAS Disk Drives. Old ISA server was Server 2003, ISA 2004, P4 with 2GB RAM, Broadcom GBit Nics, SCSI disks and was able to do much faster speedtests. Any Suggestions on what I could try next?

So which is the better choice the Veriton or the AspireRevo - There is only about £28 between them with 2GB of RAM... I would be looking at installing Windows 7 on them, is the driver support for them OK? What is the general performance like with them?

Thanks for help so far, The users we have already using SIMS all say that it is slow, not used SIMS as I don’t have a logon (and it’s on the other network ) but is this a normal user comment? We are using Sophos AV and I have configured it not to scan remote files, and excluded the c:\program files\SIMS\ directory to see if it is the AV that is causing the slowness but not had any feedback just yet. Users can’t really give me a specific time of day when it is slow, but some days are worse than others. Is there anything else I could look at, or is this something that I should talk to Capita about?

I'm new to the Sims package as well and could do with some questions answering or advise! My first thing to achieve with Sims is to remove the Admin Domain where Sims is installed and then join the server into Academic Domain as a member server where we have the Teacher user accounts so that everyone can use Sims. Has anyone gone through this process? Have read a few posts on edugeek about people having this done but have not found any posts about the same sort of migration, rather moving Sims to new server hardware. Planning on keeping the Server name the same as I think changing it will cause even more problems! The advice from Sims was that once the server had AD removed and was a member server in the new Domain that SQL would have to be reinstalled and then the databases mounted. We will also need to change the Mapped Network Drive that Sims runs on as we already have that Drive letter in use on the Academic network. - I know that if Capita are coming into do the job I should not be thinking about how it’s done, but I am nevertheless! The other questions I have are - 1) Are all the user account details for Sims held in the Sims database? I’m almost sure they are not the same as the AD account details. 2) Does FMS work in the same way for the user accounts and groups as there are some AD groups on the Admin Domain with accountancy terms for the group name. thanks in advance for any answers or advise with this

All our users who need to use SIMS.net permanently are connected directly to the Admin Network. I think our goal is to start allowing Teachers to access SIMS.net to use the assessment modules and report writing modules.

I saw earlier in the thread that this was mentioned, perhaps He has old information? Is there any chance that you could give me your Project Manager's contact details? Part of my problem is that I have until now had nothing to do with SIMS.net and I feel that I have been thrown in to the deep end on this. I have used Terminal Servers in industry before I joined the School, so I’m getting frustrated with all of this!
-
I'm finding it hard to convince our Director of Studies that using a Terminal Server is a good idea. We have a split network and He wants Teachers to start to access SIMS.net on the Admin network which is behind a Firewall. The best way I can think of is to have a Terminal Server behind the Firewall with a Port redirection allowing RDP's to the Terminal Server (rather than removing the domain on the second network and then making a single domain) Would anyone here be willing to speak to me or our Director of Studies about your experiences with SIMS.net in Terminal Sessions?? From this thread I have gathered it needs 4GB of RAM and 30 connections per server. His main concern is that SIMS.net if fragile and Captia have told us that there is no support available for Terminal Servers.

I was thinking about the possibility of using Umbuntu for desktops rather than upgrading to vista...

Hi, I'm sure that this is a really silly question as i dont know much about open source software... Can Ubuntu work on an Windows Active Directory Domain? How easy is it to get it to work if it is possible i have spotted that Likewise Open is on the ubuntu website, is this the right thing to use? Does anyone have a site that just runs Ubuntu?
-
Thanks for the quick reply! I have used Terminal Servers before so i think i should be able to do it again. Is there any special settings or tweaks to do in order for SIMS.net to work correctly? Has anyone else been told by Capita that SIMS.net can not be used in Terminal Server environemts?
-
Hello, I had a good search on the site before I posted this, so sorry if it has been posted before. we have two networks here, the Admin Network had SIMS.net on it and School network does not. I have been challenged to give access to SIMS.net while on the School Network. I have read a lot of posts about merging networks to achieve this, but our SMT want to keep the two networks as separate as possible. At the moment none of our Teachers have access to SIMS.net I have been thinking about using a Terminal Server behind a firewall in front of the Admin network. The advice I had from Capita was to Mulithome the Admin Server which would cause its own problems as it is a DC and mulithoming DC's is not a good idea. Will/Does SIMS.net work in a Terminal Server environment? I think I remember reading something about remote users making VPN Connections and then using a Terminal Server to access SIMS.net but there were problems with multiple connections? If someone could give me some advice, or a link to an article somewhere about this I would be grateful!

Thanks for the posts so far... My cache is sitting on the same mirrored disks for the OS and ISA installation. I think its a no brainier to get a reasonably priced 15k SATA HDD installed to hold the cache and see if that improves the boot up speeds. I dug my ISA 2004 book out by Dr T Shinder and checked over the cache settings. They are all set at the defaults - Maximum size of URL cached in memory (bytes) 12800 Return expired object only if expiration was - At less than 50% of original TTL, but no more than 60 minutes Percentage of free memory to use for caching - 10% The caching rule is set to return the object from cache only if a valid version exists, caching dynamic content and content requiring user authentication. Not caching objects larger than 5MB and caching SSL responses. HTTP caching is also on, with the TTL at 20% of content age, TTL boundaries no less than 15 minutes, no more than 1 day. Found a MS document that suggests having 10-20MB of cache for each user.

Hi, I have a question about ISA 2004 and Internet Cache size and settings. Just noticed that mine is currently 1Gb, which i think is a bit too small seeing as we pull down about 2Gb a day. One thing that worries me about making it bigger is that when the ISA Server is booted up it takes about 45 minutes before it can be logged onto as the cache is being checked. Is this normal? If you have ISA 2004/6 how big is your cache size and the settings for it? Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help on this, I was wondering if that could be slowing the network down. I don't know that much about VLAN's so will have to do a bit of reading about them. As I understand it at the moment VLAN's will only allow data to pass between the ports configured in the VLAN and not other ports on the Switch. So a really silly question is how would a node in a VLAN communicate to something outside of its VLAN?

Thanks for the replies so far! A bit new to packet sniffing, so going to have a few gaps in my knowledge... Just done a 1 minute capture - 179 packets 89 ARP packets - 49% (84 of them are broadcasted) 61 Intel ANS probe packets - 34% 29 Internet Protocol - 16% The ARP packets are all from Server IP addresses for Client IP Addresses, so i guess this could be normal
-
Hello, I'm hoping that someone here will be able to answer a question about ARP traffic. I have been using Wireshark to try and diagnose a slow network and, I seem to have lots of ARP traffic. It's about 40-45% no matter how long the capture runs for -smallest capture is 5 minutes longest is 2 hours. Should I be seeing this amount of ARP traffic on a network? I have about 250 computers 8 Servers. I have a gigabit switch as a backbone which links up to other 100mbit switches. I have a vanilla Windows 2003 domain with DNS and WINS configured and XP SP2 clients. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have just spotted on the Citrix forum that MS now have a non public 32-bit hotfix for this, KB941158 is what it is called. However trying to get them to give you the hotfix over the phone is difficult. I have tired and failed, where others have tried and succeeded There also is a posting that referes to making a registry key change to stop IE GPO from being processed which also seems to stop the logon delays. I have spotted a problem in using the IE6 branding dll. I have some favourites defined in my GPO which are being applied, but the url for the listed favourites are jumbled up e.g. I have two shortcuts’ one for goggle and one for hotmail the goggle link gets the url for hotmail and visa versa. I have also noticed that with the IE6 branding dll in place my WSUS server is forcing IE7 to be reinstalled which of course puts back the IE7 dll. I guess if you are using a terminal server environment you might not have it as a WSUS client, so this might not be an issue. Sorry I did not notice this earlier!
-
I only applied 899409 to my XP clients, I would personally leave the DC as it is... what were your login times before you applied 899409? It might be best to keep away from IE7, until M/S have a fix for it or if they ever intend make one. Lets hope that they do...
-
Glad to be of help to someone at last! It's definitely a M/S problem and not a Citrix problem. I read somewhere in a forum (I can't remember which forum at the moment) that M/S know about the problem with the IE7 Branding dll but don’t have a fix for it as it's a core dll. Also forgot to mention that Windows File Protection will pop up when you rename/replace the dll in the dllcache folder. Also noticed that windows updates also seem to replace the IE6 dll with the IE7 dll. I guess what would be handy is a script of some sort that renames the IE7 branding dll and copies the IE6 dll to the right place. My scripting skills are not that good  but it have been able to make a batch file that can do it, but only when an administrative account is logged on. Anyone want to rise to the challenge of writing a script for this :?:
