I picked up some leaflets about a company from the Education Show in Birmingham, I've passed them on to the Head of Science, I'll see if he still has them. They deal in teaching kits (little models) and proper power installations up to a few kW if I remember correctly.

This is why I like Moodle. It is easy to setup, has very few costs for a test implementation and staff can get used to the concept of a VLE without having to spend £££'s.

This sort of thing bugs me: "Nic card". NIC stands for Network Interface Card, so you have written Network Interface Card card. Similiarly annoying is people who say PIN number. (Ignore me I'm just a grumpy old bugger this morning.)

Sounds to me like you ought to be asking these questions to your boss. "He said that when I configure DHCP on the server make one nic private and give it an ip of 10.1.1.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and then make the other nic public and allow it to get an IP threw DHCP." As I understand things (and I've only ever tinkered with things other people have set up), AND assuming you are using Windows (which you haven't stated) in Control panel > Network Connections both NICs will appear (and any other network devices you have installed) Right Click > Properties, scroll down the list of "This connection uses the following items" to find TCP/IP, select and click the properties button. For the NIC connected to the router, choose Obtain IP address automatically, for the NIC connected to the LAN, choose Use the following IP address and fill in the boxes. Then you need to set up DHCP to issue IP addresses to the client machines. Disclaimer: This may not be what you need and I may have missed some steps.

I assume, given sufficient power, you could virtualise it though.

I've looked at FreeMIS, took a while to get ruby and rails working but i did. Doesn't appear to actually do any registration functions.

We don't have SIMS.net, we use Omnis, I don't think we have the attendance module (I try to avoid having too much to do with it to be honest and although the forms are set up, the classes are not as we don't use it for timetabling either).

I'm looking for some inexspensive (preferably open source and web based) registration software to use in school, initially for the 6th form but maybe the whole school later. I needs to register twice a day in form, but also in lessons and report to the tutor and head of sixth form of any absences. Most of what I have seen will only do part of what we want (without spending silly money).

I use Typo3 mostly for CMS based web sites, although I've not been let loose on my current school site (something to do with the Governors wanting to use a professional company ignoring the fact that I was "a professional" (in that I made a living from it) for about 6 years.) I didn't design it with all caps, and the horizontal lines were there to group sections of the menu, not to separate EVERY item.

Was it to tell him you have crashed his web server? I've just had a look and got "cannot find server"!! Yes please I'd love to have a great looking web site that no-one can see (trying it again a few seconds later and it works :?: )

It's definately not a Google offer, although Google are offering free transaction processing for a couple of months (I have just set it up along side PayPal on my lingerie shop). Might be how Ebuyer can afford to give £10 discounts? Or maybe they have signed up to some other arrangement with Google to get more people using it?

I've just created this for use during face to face training of teachers. You are welcome to use it if you think it will be useful. Rather than list all of the features of Moodle, I have concentrated on just those that the teachers are likely to use (I'm a teacher too). I use AD on Server 2003 and have the same settings as Geoff for First name and Surname but use userPrincipleName for email.

Now when I restart Apache it asks me for my pass key and that is successful but I still get "Could not connect to host localhost." when I try to access https://....

You can use some features for free. You only need to pay if you need the "advanced" features. I've not used it myself but my wife has and found it fine for what she wanted.

Moodle software is free, but the system as a whole is not. You need hardware, staff time for installation and maintenance, training. I am a great advocate of Moodle (we use it here in our ICT dept and plan to make it school wide soon) but it certainly isn't free. This is a good point. Isn't Fronter just a re-branded Digital Brain? (I loathed Digital Brain with passion and it's one of the reasons I left my previous job. I'd spent 2 years developing the use of Moodle in the ICT department with support of the Head of Dept and Deputy Head in charge of ICT only to be told that I had to scrap it all because the school was now going to use Digital Brain in line with the County. That was 2 years ago, I think the school still doesn't have a VLE implemented!)

As a simple solution, can you not make teachers "non-editing teachers" within the courses pupils should not see and set the availability to "this course is not available to students" You can also hide the courses or the containing course category so pupils don't even see them. Only enrolled staff will see them in "my courses" once they have logged in. I agree that fiddling with roles would be the way to go though. I'm planning a dual purpose Moodle installation (VLE and intranet) but haven't got far with it yet. (lack of funds for a decent server, atm it's running on my desktop!!)
