So what are people deploying with at the moment? I've downloaded Enterprise as it stands (not LTSB), is Education likely to ever get any specific goodies or is it solely being targeted as a licensing SKU rather than a product \ technical one? As much as I like 365 and the goodies we get in truth MS have only been generous with O365 because of the competing Google Apps offering. Remember the original free for students, paid for staff line and also charging for iPad apps until only recently. There's a similar silly situation going on with the EMS Suite that's only just come down to a sensible price; however the offering of "pay for staff, free for students" only covers the InTune half of the suite but not Azure AD Premium which has a silly per-user cost attached for students. That killed our interest stone dead and apparently many other institutions have said the same. Hoping these oddities will get sorted as having seen Google's latest pitch they're tailoring a lot of their products for education and taking market share so MS will have to keep giving more away to compete - which is only a good thing for us

I thought the components that used to re-trigger activation were motherboard and HDD, other bits like RAM and graphics card are usually OK. MS have made this free upgrade way more complicated than it needs to be imo.

Saw that posted the other day just after I used the ESD files to get my work laptop upgraded a day early using a USB stick Downside being my laptop at home has Linux on it at the moment so to get the free license I have to put 7 on first which is a pain.

- Cortana demands a Microsoft account, annoying if you want to solely use your Office 365 login but still have voice search - free Windows 10 license can't be claimed without going through an upgrade, wish there was a power user tool to run locally that would convert the license then allow you to back it up onto a USB stick for a clean install straight away - there's a Note button in the Action Center that opens up what seems to be a bundled version of OneNote but again no option to sign in with an Office 365 account rather than Microsoft Account Need to test out a spare machine and join it to Azure AD to see if that solves any of the account annoyances above, a business machine should never see a prompt for a Microsoft Account imo

Annoying that Cortana requires a Microsoft account. I guess MS are assuming it'll be disabled on business devices but a shame they still haven't twigged that if a user has an Azure AD login they don't want to be asked for a Microsoft account... ever. Been using my Win10 install today and tried the Tablet Mode option, not convinced that's going to look great on my Surface. Taskbar seems a waste of screen space and browser no longer touch friendly, ideally needs to resize some of its controls for tablet mode too.

Just dropped a long-overdue SSD in my work laptop, set it up with the factory 8.1 image and upgraded to 10... ...installed OK but needs an extra reboot after first login for the modern apps to appear (Edge etc.) apart from that feels very snappy as you'd expect from an i5 \ 840 Evo combo

Our Palo support usually says to hold off any brand new releases until they're classed as stable. May be worth checking if you have maintenance on the device and see if you can ask the question to whoever holds the support contract to confirm which version is best to move to.

Would do on a spare laptop but waiting on the upgrade license. Anyone been running it on a Surface Pro 3? What's it like with Continuum compared to 8.1 (which on a tablet does work well)

Always seems to be related to upgrades, I know MS seem to want to push people down this route with Win10 but what of us who like an old-school clean install I heard that got changed to "it remains free, but only if you stay on the Fast Ring for future updates"?

Does anyone know how the free upgrade license will work if I do a fresh install of Windows 10 (or indeed upgrade, say build 10166 to RTM?) I remember seeing that the Insider "free" copy only stays active if you agree to be a guinea pig (OK for my VMs but not on my SP3 etc.) so are MS offering a route to effectively "trade-in" your existing Windows 7 \ 8 key for a Win 10 one but not have to go through the upgrade process from the old OS to new?

Regardless of site permissions be careful with how users share individual documents. We've found that because the overall SharePoint instance is tenant-wide it also means any documents shared with "Everyone" will appear in search results for students and staff. You also need to keep the SharePoint license assigned for students for them to be able to use OneDrive so no way around that either. I'd feel much happier if there were a way to separate SharePoint to the level you can using the GAL options in Exchange but it doesn't seem quite as mature in that regard.

Bit of a weird one this so not sure if anyone else has done something similar, maybe @EduTech may be able to advise? We're currently using the free version of Centrify Identity Service to provide SSO functionality for Office 365. It works fine for that and we've been happy with it but recently some other cloud \ hosted apps that we're implementing all show steps for ADFS in their authentication instructions. Unfortunately those steps don't map like-for-like on Centrify and it'll cost us £££ to get them to build custom app definitions, which also means going onto a paid plan as well. On top of that some of the vendors won't support using a different product to ADFS (although in theory they're all using WS-Fed \ SAML at the end of the day) and we don't want to open ourselves up to being stuck in the middle of two vendors if something doesn't work. With that in mind I'm thinking of setting up ADFS but what I'm wondering is if I can leave Office 365 where it is and just point the new apps at the freshly built ADFS URL when it's done? In theory I think it should work as you define the SSO URL when setting up each application but not certain if there's something at a domain level that might clash at some point? The only reference to something similar is where someone had a badly-configured ADFS server they wanted to move away from and the gist was that it was OK to build a new one in-situ for the new application - has anyone been in a similar situation?

Just out of interest what's the reaction been like in terms of parents being asked (told?) to buy the iPad? Always been interested to see how these schemes work in practice as it's somewhat taking the cost of equipment and passing it onto the students depending on how you look at it.

We also tried NTFS shares but had similar issues with Adobe programs, way too easy to corrupt files just by clicking "Get Info" or similar actions. In the end we've got two products that have finally given us a stable setup for 300+ machines: - Centrify for Mac deals with user provisioning and allows GPO to configure settings - ExtremeZIP serves out AFP from a Windows Server Both paid products but worth it to get a setup that works in a networked environment.

Sensible idea, holding the key doesn't have a current equivalent so wouldn't be too confusing for users and fairly easy to "market" as the OS runs through the OOBE phase
