Good morning all, With the 12th rapidly approaching(which may or may not yield new IOS devices), the rumours of 1800Mhz LTE on the said IOS devices(maybe), and Orange/TMobile starting to roll out 4g on 1800Mhz(again maybe, on a date that is, will see what the event/webinar on the 11th holds, could just be a name change), I may take the utterly abhorrent decision of iPhones and iPads when our mobile contract is up at the end of the year. I want 4g for the future, and the thought of being stuck for 2 years without it, as we would have out of date devices for the term if we go with technology and a service that won't get near 4g for at least a year, hurts to say the least. So Orange, Everything Everywhere, or whatever they change their name to on the 11th, and Apple may be the way forward for me to kick start my future network strategy, and not get left behind until the contract comes up again in 2014/2015. I have always stood by the "IOS is not for the enterprise" mantra, I even got rid of my own iPhone 3g, powermac and iPods a few years ago in protest of the 'Apple Ecosystem' and never looked back. But the times they are a changing. iPhones, iPads, i* are in the enterprise and are here to stay(We already have 20 iPads, which still sit in their boxes on my server rooms shelves, where they have been since March, bar the odd few I have been made to deploy, under duress) If I go this white and shiny route, I will probably specify a mac mini server to look after it all, profile manager 2 etc. I am also looking at a Data VPN from Orange, so we have our own APN directly connected into the college network, no more clunky VPN clients on mobile devices(yey)! My questions after all the preamble and guff, is: Can PM2 track the iDevices? Like the find my i* feature on the web/app/icloud? I was just going to run Meraki and iCloud, but have since found out that you can only register 10 devices on 1 id for iCloud, I want to be able to see all 50(my projected initial number of combined devices) in one console/map of the world(why is x's ipad enroute to china, better wipe that, etc) and if we are going to do this, I am going to do it properly and all enterprisey.(Ok its not just the mappy thing I want from PM2, but it would tick the safeguarding staff out in the field box) Anyone know if PM2 does this? The bullet point of Asset Tracking on the features list, could mean one of hundred things, down to "it tells you what apps a device has", which while useful would not be my preferred explanation of that feature. Everything is tied to the microsoft account that was given when you went with EES, so its entirely possible you are looking at an old one. As licenses don't really go away, they hang about! At our college, I have some licensing on my email address, but the EES is on the technical managers email. I believe you can have everything shifted to one address, but not sure how!

You usually only get enterprise when you have SA and other things. I dont think you get it with a normal windows licence. The licence summary in the VLSC should tell you exactly what your are licenced for.

Have you got EES with a desktop pack or Windows licences with SA?

For some reason, if I click on the Windows shortcut in Downloads and Keys, it only shows Windows 8 Pro. but if I search for Enterprise, it shows! Weird really.

Depends what kind of key they gave you. A MAK key is one you use manually in setup, the traditional way. KMS is one that you use with a server for multiple automatic activations. The 2 kinds of code, although they look the same, are not interchangeable, so that would be your starting point. James

Seconded, you only need the management aspects if you want the management aspects, otherwise EES with core or enterprise desktop packs include the Forefront Online protection CAL, which as mentioned by plexer can be rolled out by script and 'managed' by GPO. James

You have tested the switch port as well, by plugging in something else? I say this, not in a grandmother sucking eggs type way, but in a learnt the hard way type of thing! Switch with ports that were flaky when we loaded it. Other than that, try newest drivers and newest firmware if available. Other than that, on-board NICs do fail sometimes, cheapest fix is sling a PCI NIC in there. James

Evening all, We have recently been toying with the idea of dumping our ageing(but in perfect working order)NEC TDM phone system, to the point of running a small trial for some home based distance learning tutors. Dell 2950 server with an 8 port OpenVox card with 6 FXO modules. These modules are then connected to 6 analogue ports on the old PBX, and I have programmed the server to give one line to each of the 5 new people(with a DDI on each one, and them locked to one line, effectively giving them a private trunk) and one to their manager(based in France, that's distance learning for you!) They then use the Jitsi soft phone client and a headset to connect. Works swimmingly well, the odd hiccup with them not initiating the VPN before the phone software, isolated hanging up detection problems, but on the whole, no echo and happy users. So now that's working and testing well, I want to start thinking about scaling up to everyone desk in the organization, 4 regional centres all connected with fibre based leased lines, some 80 ish seats, plus the 10 or so people who work from home, who will have soft phones. The test is on Elastix, which works lovely but is a little on the feature intensive side, I'm surprised Kitchen Sink isn't a menu option! I have now started building a PBX in a flash server, 1.8 Asterisk with 2.10 FreePBX, brown i believe, as it fits more into the start small and secure, add what you need as you go along category. This is on an old 1u Dell dual xeon, 2GB server, but it will move to the 2950 if I get a go in the distant murky future. What do people think about all the different distros of PBX? Are they all a bit much of a muchness or do some win more than others? Should I have one single server and just connect endpoints over the VPN's or have a server at each centre? Plan is mostly SIP desk phones with the odd softphone(I am playing with a 7961G in SIP mode at the moment, and it works very well(ringing voicemail mainly!), and probably 20 sip trunks. We can either have all the sip trunks hanging off a main server(100MB line) at HQ or spread them around the centres on distributed servers. Which is best for good service to my users? The question of fail over etc and loss of phones if VPN fails will come up, but each centre already has a phone system hosted by the buildings we reside in, so if things go down, they plug their old phone in again and off they go, so resilience and fail over doesn't really come into it at this point.(If the VPN is down, most likely so is the internet, so a local server would be useless as well) Anyone done this, any pitfalls or gotchas? Any advice appreciated, and if I can help anyone get started on the path to IP telephony, don't hesitate to ask. Thanks James

Good old MS, their age old trick of using the general public as beta testers! The days instead of weeks looks like a good one, might try that, if after the next 3 weeks we get the same problem, or the catalogue problem you describe. I am going to regret saying this, but I've never had to restore from tape, I've just dipped into the disk backups, either onsite or offsite, and restored from there. The tapes are mainly as a total disaster backup. You watch, tomorrow all hell will break loose after saying I've never had to restore from tape!! Right, as we run a 3 week rotation, and I have retention set to 3 weeks, maybe the content isn't quite expiring in time for it to be overwritten. I have changed the retention to 2 weeks and keeping the 3 week rotation, will see what happens. Thanks for the input James

Hi all, Any DPM gurus around? I have a problem with our tape backup. We have 2 standalone LTO4 tapes that do full backups from separate groups over night every night. The problem we have is that when a tape comes back in the rotation, DPM appends the new backup and then errors because it has run out of space and no new tape is available(which is right, as it is standalone, and not a library) Is there anyway for DPM to overwrite every time, rather than append? Any help appreciated. Thanks James

Do you actually need native mode? I was told it was more of an arse than was it was worth. Unless you need the super secret squirellynes of the full https though. James

And, if you log into the MS VLSC and check your licence entitlement, you should find numbers in the SC 2012 boxes, showing how many you are entitled too. As far as I know, 1 virtual machine = 1 SC2012 licence needed. James

The transfer of licences is one that you get a certain amount of licences of 2012 in exchange for your 2007 licences. You do know 2012 is available? And if you are currently licensed for System Center with SA, then you can go straight to it? James

Orange offer a service, where they will create you your own AP for 3G. It involves installing a router on your network, but everything mobile uses your AP which automatically connects to YOUR network, applying all filtering from YOUR LAN and providing VPN access without having to faff about. It's called Data VPN. I've got a data sheet somewhere if anyone wants it. James

I followed it for our RTM install of 2012, but 'adjusted' accordingly, when items differed from what I needed for the install. And anything that wasn't outlined, I have used my google-fu and know-how, and the good-folk at windowsn00b and here have helped along the way. All in all, a good write-up, but meant for a lab, any proper production install is going to be tailored to fit the system in hand. Our one site system runs on a dual proc dell 2950 with 4GB of RAM, and we use SCCM,SCDPM and SCVMM. This is connected to a DAS shelf on an R700 over ISCSI to provide the storage for DPM and the rest is local, plus 2 standalone LTO4 tape drives, giving us 3TB a night backup capacity(compressed, so not quite that much, depending on type of data). We also have SCCM distribution points on the 2008R2 servers at our remote sites, providing PXE to those sites. A secondary SCDPM server sits off-site (10MB BTNet there and 100MB BTNet here, as boy do those servers talk, throttled during business hours of course! Firewall is at 188GB total out at this moment in time, and that's since last reboot, which wasn't long ago)and keeps a secondary copy of the main site DPM data, for disaster recovery purposes, this is mainly our virtual machines, which we can restore to running VM's on another DAS shelf there. Lots of TB sitting doing nothing, but JUST IN CASE, I want to be able to say to the boss, yes of course, we will back up and running in a few hours, depending on the time it takes to restore the VM's, which are both Windows and Linux. Sorry for the explanation, but it will give people ideas to how good these systems are for the EES money(I use good loosely, as its not entirely perfect, which users of it will know!) James

Does the drive hold any AD profiles? If profiles are locked down to user only, they won't report space used back to the logged in server user. Made me scratch my head a bit on the data server. James
