tried ipconfig /flushdns already (several times ) I'm trying from a run box, so explorer. Also, MS Word crashes when trying to print to a printer connected by server name, ok when printer connected to the same server by ip address.

Curioser and curioser... \\server.domain works. NSlookup looks ok too DNS looks as I'd expect and the advanced Tcp/Ip stuff is as @twin-turbo said it should be, too. Wosnext?!

... but it is Friday so that sometimes doesn't take much! I've got two Win7 teacher laptops with the same bizzare problem. When accessing one particular server (PDC, also hosts most of the printers, Running Server 2003), for examply by typing \\servername in the run box, they fail with "the network name is no longer available". However, they can resolve the server name to the correct ip to ping and can access all the resources by ip address (eg \\10.xxx.xxx.xxx\printername). These two observations, together with the fact that only these two laptops are affected, are really confusing me! If it was DNS everyone would be affected, they can resolve the address ok (for a ping) and can access the resources by the IP but not via the name. They can also see all the other servers normally so the networking seems ok??? Incidentally both have up to date and working Sophos AV... I only mention this as I'm beginning to suspect foul play...? I've tried: ipconfig /flushdns adding the server to the hosts file adding the server to the lmhosts.sam file Anyone got any better ideas before I reimage them both?!

I used to use Opera too - liked the speed dial, the ctrl-enter password thingy and the speed as well as the "realtime" editing - but fell out with it and went to Firefox instead when it stopped handling proxy authentication properly and kept prompting for usernames and passwords even with "remember" ticked. I twas all over their forums, but has not yet been resolved AFAIK

Yes, that worked fine Annnnnnnd breathe. In the end, I did the following: Create an empty calendar (called 'temp' or something) in Outlook on the PA's machine Copy, as described by @themightymrp above, the events from the 'orphaned' sharepoint calendar to it Reconnect the restored Sharepoint server Send / Recieve in outlook (at which point, as expected, all the recent entries dissapear from the 'orphaned' calendar) Copy all the events back from the 'temp' calendar created above, same method Send / Recieve again to copy all the events back to the server. Then take a snapshot of the server and sort out some better backup:rolleyes: That's meant that the original sharepoint list is being used, so no need to set anything new up in sharepoint. The only downside to that is that it means that events that were actually in the backup will be duplicated - if that's an issue I guess you could restore to a new list in the same way, but for this it's not a big issue. Right - let's get the coffee on!

You know what, that sort of thing might just work - I've just (partly) given it a go. I'll copy the events to a blank calendar from the "orphaned" sharepoint one, create a new calendar in Sharepoint and connect to outlook, then copy them over to that:D

+1 for this - it's what I've done in the past (just note that the printui.dll PrintUIEntry is case sensitive(!)) and that, I think, you have to be a local admin to install print drivers in Win 7:rolleyes:

I need a little assistance as I'm having a bit of a panic:o! We have a small-scale sharepoint system created so that the Head and his PA can share a diary. I've got a diary on there too, mainly for testing purposes. It runs in a Virtualbox VM running Server 2008R2 connected straight out onto the internet via a bridged NIC, and they connect to it with Outlook 2010. The host machine, unbeknown to me, has developed a hardware fault which has been causing it to reboot occasionally without warning; as virtualbox was running headless as a service, starting automatically on boot up, it's just been restarting quietly... until half an hour ago when it's mangled its virtual HDD by being "powered off" without shutting down correctly. I've restored the VM to a snapshot taken a while ago, so it works again, and immediately tried "send/recieving" in my outlook, and all my recent entries have dissapeared. Not a problem for me as most of it was test data, but for the Head, it may be as he won't know if he's coming or going! I've suspended the VM so that their calendars don't synchronise and lose the lot! So... How do you *populate* a sharepoint calendar from outlook, rather than synching outlook with it? (or has anyone got any ideas how to get out of this mess?!)

At the risk of appearing a bit dense, what's the difference between an Intel I350-T2 Bulk Ethernet Server Adapter (Intel I350-T2 Bulk Ethernet Server Adapter (I350T2BLK) - dabs.com) and an Intel I350-T2 Ethernet Server Adapter (Intel I350-T2 Ethernet Server Adapter (I350T2) - dabs.com) ?? One of our fileservers caused yet another LAN storm by jabbering this morning, so it's getting a new card - "Bulk Ethernet" is a new one on me, and I can't see any difference in the specs apart from the name.

I've just bought 30 pairs of headphones (nothing fancy, 'bout a fiver or so each) for a class set that's used either in the IT room or bookable for use by departments with their laptops and netbooks. Anyone got any bright ideas on how to store them? Putting them in a crate all the cables get tangled and they get damaged as a result sliding them on a brush handle type affair may be better but less portable:music: .....? Incidentally my first preference was to get a truck load of 80p earphones to sell to the pupils for £1, and have a set of earphones added to the required list of equipment alongside ruler, pen, pencil etc. but it didn't get past SLT . This time. I may take it back to them later!

That could work and it's something I was thinking but I'd discounted as I wanted to keep the physical seperation... but I guess I could make the new server the host and put the image in a VM on it... I'll give it a shot and report back

I'm approaching my wit's end with this one, so need a little input. Some time ago, I set up a sharepoint server initially to host the head's shared diary (and mine, plus some teachers who have asked question that can best be solved sharepointilly) but to provide us with a handy facility to expand to other things later, on some "test hardware" (read "old PC from a classroom") and it's been working fine, doing exactly what I wanted it too:cool:. I therefore need to move it to its proper server hardware, so that it's quicker, robust and the Head's PA can stop making paper backups. For my peace of mind, it's connected straight to an outward facing IP, is its own DC (in its own domain and forest) etc and has no connection, physical or otherwise to the rest of the network; all connections to it go out onto the internet and back in through that IP. It's Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Express 2008 R2 running on Server 2008 R2. I had (naively) hoped to simply ghost it and do an in place upgrade to repair Windows, add any drivers then plug it in to the same port and away we go... Except that for some bizzare reason you can't do an in place upgrade of Server 2008R2 (or Windows7 come to that) unless you can boot it:rolleyes: (IMHO the biggest clanger M$ have ever dropped - and that's saying something - the main reason you'd want to do one is because you can't!). The recovery options on the CD don't help either. I've also tried sysprepping it (having first deployed the ghost image on a similar PC) but that fails too, probably due to driver issues on the server RAID, though I don't see why it would as Server 2008R2 can be installed on it without any extra drivers. So to plan B: set up the new server as identically as possible and tried to restore a sharepoint backup into it. I've got Windows, SQL and Sharepoint installed, but the restore fails too and I can't make head nor tail of the logfile (attached)sprestore.zip If anyone can shed any light on any of this it will help - What's the correct procedure for moving a sharepoint to a different server? What's going wrong according to the logfile? Any educated guesses at why? Thanks all:)

These two are pretty well even on specs (apart from HDD size which is, in this case, largely irrelevant), so I'm interested in experiences. I haven't bought Lenovos for a while (for no other reason than they didn't fit the price / spec fit at the time as well as the ones I bought), and I've never bought Fujitsu laptops. Lenovo used to be built like a brick outhouse - is that still the case? The shortlist is: Lenovo B580 (Lenovo B580 Core i3-2328 4GB 500GB DVD-Writer 15.6" Widescreen 1366x768 Windows 8 64-Bit (M94A9UK) - dabs.com) or Fujitsu AH512 (Fujitsu FUJITSU LIFEBOOK 15.6" Intel i3 2328M 4GB 320GB Win8 64bi (VFY:AH512M33A2GB) - dabs.com) Any comments please (Both CAN and WILL be downgraded to Win 7!)

My mate once installed Windows 95 on a 486 DX2 66, it took two and a bit days, mainly because he'd accidentally turned the turbo off... He's still never lived it down. I've seen to that.
