  1. Hi, We have tried deploying printer with GPO and its not going very well. Some users can access all printers and some cant access any. Even if they use the same computer. SO we are now going to try using a login script to see if that works at all. Thanks to Nick67 im going to use his script of cd \ c: cd C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US Pause Cscript Prnport.vbs -a -r IP_10.0.0.74 -h 10.0.0.74 -o raw -n 9100 Cscript Prnport.vbs -a -r IP_10.0.0.75 -h 10.0.0.75 -o raw -n 9100 Cscript Prnport.vbs -a -r IP_10.0.1.75 -h 10.0.1.75 -o raw -n 9100 Cscript Prnport.vbs -a -r IP_10.0.0.78 -h 10.0.0.78 -o raw -n 9100 Cscript Prnport.vbs -a -r IP_10.0.0.73 -h 10.0.0.73 -o raw -n 9100 Cscript Prnport.vbs -a -r IP_10.0.0.72 -h 10.0.0.72 -o raw -n 9100 Pause cscript prnmngr.vbs -a -p "Ricoh Front" -m "Ricoh Aficio 3228C PCL6" -r "IP_10.0.0.74" cscript prnmngr.vbs -a -p "Ricoh Back" -m "Ricoh Aficio 3228C PCL6" -r "IP_10.0.0.75" cscript prnmngr.vbs -a -p "Ricoh Engineering" -m "Ricoh Aficio 3235C PCL6" -r "IP_10.0.1.75" cscript prnmngr.vbs -a -p "HP Cait" -m "HP Color LaserJet CP2020 Series PCL6" -r "IP_10.0.0.78 cscript prnmngr.vbs -a -p "RonBrother" -m "Brother MFC-9840CDW" -r "IP_10.0.0.73" cscript prnmngr.vbs -a -p "VVBrother" -m "Brother MFC-9840CDW" -r "IP_10.0.0.72" He however forced the computer to update the driver lst from windows update. Our problem is that our printers arnt on windows update and therefore that system cannot be used. Is it possible o point this script to drivers located on a shared folder on the server? Many thanks, Dan
  2. Thanks to both of you. Yes we have just experienced the incompatible database as our c drives were locked down to tight but never thought of that affecting this. Good idea about the virtuals. We have a couple of virtual machines for testing so that could be a really simple solution. At least we can say that our school has provided a solution. I will say to other schools what our plans are and then i will see what they do. I've only just started working in IT so dont know much about sims at the mo. Does all the data get pulled of the schools servers and collected by the council?
  3. Hi, A member of staff has joined us who required SIMS for our school, the problem comes when she also needs access to other schools SIMS as she moves around the schools in our area. I've seen on this forum how to connect to multiple databases but i cant seem to find a simple solution to let her connect to whichever server she needs to collect data from. Can anyone think of a way around this without 5 laptops? Thanks
  4. Hi, We experienced this the other day when SIMS was updated. We were told it was down to us not giving admin staff the correct permissions to folders and registry settings on the c drive. Do you run simsperm?
  5. Thanks Denon, will have to read about what it backs up. We have five sites, primary and secondary. The server went down this morning leading the whole school without computer access until we got in. This lead the IT manager saying that we need another server so he has sent the other IT Tech off to find a motherboard identical to our existing server so we can get one of our old server up adn running on server 2008 r2. I would like this to be a thing that i can do. Sort of like a mini project that i can learn from. What is possible regarding backup and replocation? If we had active directory U&C and group policy backed up on server 2 then that could keep the school going until we fixed server 1. Is anything like this possible? Thanks p.s. We dhave server 2008 enterprise. I've just found out about clustering. No idea if this would help us or not.
  6. Hi, So i've got my first job in it working in a school and im getting to know the systems that they have but the thing i have noticed is that there is a single server that does everything except storing of user data. There are NAS drive with hot swap HDD in them that store the users private files but my biggest concern is that there is a single server which handles everything else. If that were to go down then everything would go including curriculum and admin. In our workshop we do have two servers sat that, not even plugged in. Cant say how old they are at the mo but it seems a bit of a waste. Is it possible to replicate the server onto one of these other servers so if the main server were to go down then the other server would kick in? I've never done anything like this before at uni so im learning by doing it. Has anyone got any recommendations on wht we can do as i dont like the current situatiion? Thanks
  7. Hi, SIMS has been setup on the server by an outside guy and its now up to us to install it onto the workstations. WE have made a few guesses but would like to ask for some assistance. The setup files are located on the server so we have mapped the sims folder onto the admin account. The local program files is left default on the c drive. The shared program files has been linked to \\server\sims but we are unsure if this is correct. When we try and log in after installation we get error 0. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Fred
  8. Hi Richard, Thanks for your reply. as we have the software we thought it would be goood if we can set some permanent policies like blocking anything with facebook in the url and automatically shutting down computers at 5:30. I have tried adding the policies to groups but this doesnt gt applied to offline computers. Can i also ask, if i were to apply the policy using our admin machine and we were then to turn it off would the policies still remain?, Also do the policies update on restart so if i added a new blocked website to the list, would the offline computers pick this update up when they turned on? Finally if we apply a policy to the computers onour adming machine and then installed ab tutor control onto another computer, would this computer see what policies have been applied. I would test for myself but teamviewer has crashed again and would like to know for when im in next. many thanks Fred p.s. We do use a website filter which is provided to us by the council but we would also like an instant website blocker.
  9. Hi, We have been looking to install wordshark on the student machines but the problem is that wordshark requres the cd to run. We have thought about sharing the cd drive on the teachers pc to the student machines but having 15 computers connecting to a single cd would probably slow it down too much. Is there a away of installing it onto the server/machine to get around this problem? Thanks in advance. Fred
  10. Hi, Is it possible to apply Policies in ab control to computers that are switched off so that when they are switched on the Policies apply automatically? AB tutor does have access to AD. At the mo we are having to go round the entire school switching all computers on to add or delete a policy. Many thanks. Dan
  11. Hi, We are looking into running delprof remotly from one of our admin machines but when we try to run it at the mo it complains about not having backup and restore permissions. Does anyone know which user this would be run as so we can give it this permission? I have yet to do any proper research but is it easy to give a user backup/restore privilidges? Thanks Fred
  12. Thanks for the replies. I guess we could combine the features of delprof and runas but this would mean having to type in every computers name. I wonder iif i could just type the delprof comand in followed by the password on the next line and submit the whole lot if it would treat the password then as the password and not a command. Will give it a go tomorrow
  13. At our place it is unlimited. However, i would like to put in a limit so staff have to be more careful on what they store. I would probably go for 5-10gb if i had the choice but its up to the manager who want to keep it as unlimited at the mo.
  14. Hi, On the C drive on every computer we have delprof2 to delete the local profiles. The plan was to then run it remotly using AB controls command prompt feature. The problem comes when we are asked for the administrator password, if we type it into the input box then it treats it as a new command and not a response to the last command request. Does anyone know of a solution to this? Thanks in advance. Fred
  15. Hi, We have deployed around 15 printers over a few school sites uover the unified network. Three sites appear to print fine but the other two sites are unable to print and the print option says that the drivers need updating. We have just checked that non administrators can install drivers for printers so dont think that this is the problem. Has anyone got any ideas of what could be wrong? Thanks
  16. found out that there is a setting in the remote session host configuration ' restrict each user to a single session' I wonder if its possible to get three sessions going. It doesnt like it if they all use the same account at the mo.
  17. Hi all, The other day i needed to reset a user account password but was unable to remote desktop into the server as another administrator was setting up a printer. Is there a was of allowing two people to perform different roles on the server at the same time? Im guessing a remote desktop piece of software wouldnt work as i would see what he is doing so im wondering if there is an active directory user and group editor that can be installed onto a admin machine. Thanks in advance.
  18. I guess its to do with security as its going to hold software etc. Tried to do a folder share but couldnt access it due to being restricted. Probably something that has been set up in the server as its been locked down quite a bit. Also one of the techy's only does one day a week so it would be handy for him to be able to send stuff as well. Thanks cpjitservices will try CentOS. Does it have to be 5.6 or can it be the newer 6.0?
  19. Hi, We are looking to create a FTP server that can be acces by the computers on site. We have bothe computers joined to the domain and also stand alone computers. We are hoping to get it running in a virtual machine on a admin workstation. We were looking for a linux system but we also can use windows 7 with software on. Can anyone give any tips please? Thanks Fred
  20. Hi, I have read several bit of info on the net about how useful the ipad can be for technicians, admins etc but does anyone know how the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer running android would do? I know it is capable of running the remote desktop software that my school uses but not sure if android provides any other useful apps. Thanks in advance.
  21. Hi, I have also been looking at the asus, it would seem that its a good competitor for the ipad 2. I was going to try and get the ipad but i think im now going to save the cash and go for the asus. Have you found any more info? If i find anything il let you know. May go and try one out tomorrow if i can find a shop thats showing them.
  22. Aahh, so the sound my WD external HDD makes every so often when i plug it in. Thought that my be something to do with power but never looked into it. Thanks, will go with the WD blue i think, one of the cheapest.
  23. Thanks, I might go for a 5400 HDD something like the blue if the startup load is lower than the 7200rpm black edition. Hopefully less chances of it drawing too much power and failing to start. Does the zalman give any warnings if it isnt getting enough power or does it just not even light up?
  24. Thanks LeMarchand, I wonder if you have the Y lead for 7200 HDD's and single for 5400. Normal external HDD are 5400 arnt they? update: Just had a look at western digitals site and they say that the 5400 and 7200 use the same power. 500ma 2.5v.
