Try poking and holding in the reset button on the back for 5+ seconds, then recalibrating it....it's sorted 2 of ours now that were acting VERY oddly.

I went a month ago, after a longish delay (according to their records, 2003...oops). Net result - eyes stable, prescription unchanged. Had 2 new pairs of glasses (still made the original frame!), kept the previous ones too...baby daughters and glasses, argh.. I raised the subject of contacts too - I was told in 2003 that "no chance, not with your eyes...". The optician looked surprised and said "times change! Come back on the 9th April for a test fitting, free. See how you get on. We most certainly CAN do that..". Bonus!

Ours don't have any settings - battery in and walk away.. Actually, there's an exception..my much loved (and frankly indestructible) projector alarm clock. Bought in Summer 2000 (when I got this job) with a friend who bought one as well, both are running flawlessly 11 years on, and mine is on it's..ooh..still single figures set of batteries. Psh. Amateurs. Radio-controlled clocks FTW. Clocks change in our house automatically. Old school tech 3, mobiles 0. Nice. I suffer with SAD, and in the winter I made my own. 1 plug in 24h timer, 1 flexi-neck lamp, 1 60w daylight bulb. Set that to power on about 30 minutes before the alarm went off, and no more issue. I find a 16 month old baby sticking her finger up my nose makes an effective alarm that's not fooled by the clocks, but run by stomach..hah..

We're looking at buying now...Renting is OK, but..currently paying £545/m down a black hole is annoying me. Plus where we are has no garden, is a git to heat, bills are huge etc. Went to HSBC, had a chat..on our combined income (just over £30k), using the "affordability" method, not the "x times your salary" malarkey, using our housekeeping spreadsheet etc...they've offered us a mortgage of £104k over 30 years. Fortunately I have around 30k sat in an ISA whose sole purpose is to act as a deposit.. Scary. But then, it has been pointed out that I'd be paying towards an end, not "losing" the money as we do now, and besides, children are an even bigger commitment than a mortgage - from that view, it's less alarming. We live as frugally as we can (within reason), and rarely buy new. My gadget count is I suspect low in geek-terms..and I don't even have a TV license. I'm going to have a chat to an IFA who was recommended to me...I'll feel better with an impartial viewpoint. Furnishing wise - 90% of my furniture is secondhand/free, my TV is an ancient 21" trinitron, etc etc.

Heh. Netbook - Original AA1. Stripdown, 1 week later. Upgrade to max RAM (1.5gb). Next week, did the same to Jems. Also change out the damned Atheros card..yuk. Mobile..Acquired a new (to me) K800i. Next day, stripdown and clean, hunt down and reflash firmware with later, non locked revision. Same as when I got my Motorola MPX200 - find iffy Winver upgrade, hit apply. WM5 ran quite well. Kitcar, yes..I know that feeling.. Would settle for being able to find a way of getting EasyTronic system (automated manual shift) onto a non-easytronic non CANBUS vehicle..they appeal to me, but not in the MK5 Astra.

oh YES. Missus bought me (well, officially 16mo daughter, but you know how it goes) a 2010 re-release of the BigTrak. I've been forced to do an initial teardown to silence the speaker, as it's too loud and terrifies Isabel! Just as I remember it, pretty much. Heh. Most things get at least a partial disassembly within a month, as curiosity beats me. My second Astra lasted all of..the time it took to drive home before I had the injection manifold/throttle body/DIS pack etc off because a) it ran badly, and b) It's a drive by cable C14SE Multipoint injection, and I was curious as to how it stacked up against the main car (Z16SE Mpi, drive by wire). Same system in effect, different operational strategy, several improvements in execution etc.

Yep, I had it on my Aspire One original - Atom, upgraded to the max 1.5gb RAM, still using the godawful PSSD1800 SSD too - ran fine. Now running a lightweight Linux distro on it, with Virtualbox set up to run a Win32 VM for vehicle diagnostic purposes. Impressively nippy.

I had one last week too from a staff member. I've seen worse..but it IS a PITA. Very SpyAxe-esque.

Heh, ours is ticking over nicely with the 6th form here. Using a Y-Cam white, with external enclosure up a light pole, connected to 30ft of PoE cat6, set to FTP a still every 10 minutes to a location. Currently the location is a 4gb USB pen in my SnakeOS home BT client box, that's living in the building cab. Works well. (Of course, if their IT guy hadn't supplied us with moody media converters it'd have been FTP'ing back to our IIS box and showing on the website, but heyho..fibre is fine, but his media converters are not.)

Congrats! Echo the "sleep whilst you can" bit.. 16 months on, we class a sunday 7.30am wakeup as a lie in.. Take it easy, try to relax and enjoy the experience. Hopefully your missus doesn't get all day morning sickness throughout (mine did, badly). Go to the scans, take cash to get a copy. We have a handmade "memories" chest that things like that live in, along with first vests etc. Take pictures throughout of growing bump (good to look back on, we have a blog with our "found out to now" memories in, as well as lots of pictures, movies etc. Some tips: When the day gets close, get the bag packed and waiting. Don't procrastinate. When Jem went into labour it went straight to 4 minute gaps, no messing or slow introduction. Get your car serviced and keep 1/2 a tank of fuel in it. If you don't have a camcorder, get one...even if you don't record the birth, you won't want to miss the immediate video chance (next birth will be videoed on my flipcam). In the bag, put in some Jaffa cakes...we had a 12 hour labour, they were a godsend. Some books too = good. I also recommend as the time approaches, make up a stock of small, long keeping, easy-prep meals and freeze them. Trust me, you won't feel like or have the time for cooking for a while. I cooked for Jem throughout, and family stepped in post birth to help. I'm off to get Izzy from Nursery now, and I'm still stupidly excited by it, every day. It's the highlight of my evening.

I call it "2 weeks time" personally. That's when my house is playing host to 3 webdevs, plus the missus (webdev), plus me, plus a friend who's moving from webdev to work for Red Bull Racing, and whoever else pops in. Heh. Why me...

AA? Don't make me howl. You could have pushed the car to a garage by the time they got to you. I was a member for 25 years, I had no complaints UNTIL... Car went for MOT, passed. Went shopping, came out, driving home and BANG, the rear axle locked up. Both rear brakes totally exploded, car unmoveable. In the middle of nowhere. I'm disabled, missus was heavily pregnant. Called the AA..explained.."We'll be with you in an hour". OK. An hour passed. I called again..."3 hours tops". Right. That soon became "As soon as possible", and finally it became "can you leave the car somewhere safe and we'll get it tomorrow?". I went decidedly mad over the phone at them for that, and they got told to cram their ruddy service up their arses. We ended up staggering to a friends house (which really fooked my legs, and did the missus no favours - it was a LONG way), he drove us back to the car in his Xsara, with a toolkit that included a lumphammer. Lets just say I eventually got the wheels turning again, and had the car towed to a local garage by the Xsara, who said "ooh, bad luck..". £350 later and all was well, but I'm never going back with the AA again. Not to mention the time I had to call on them with a previous car, and the guy spent an hour trying to get the engine to start. I'd already changed the EFi System, fuelpump, cam sensor etc before I called them. He diagnosed a "failed engine, total goner", and left. It was a chafed wire to the crank sensor..no signal to the ECU = no fire of the plugs = no go. Once I spotted and fixed it, it fired up first flick of the key. Now with Greenflag - when the ECU of this Astra popped, he diagnosed it first time, and said "This'll get you running", and popped out a rely and replaced it with a paperclip. Instantly the fuel pump cuts in, and off we went. ECU was diagnosed by a refurb firm as "intermittent, failed quad driver module", which drives the earth switching for various circuits including the fuel pump. FAR better than the AA.
