Watched the first episodes of both 'The Lazarus Project' (which I think is quite new) and 'The Leftovers' (which aired a while ago I think)... on Now TV. When none of our usual TV is on or we are all caught up, I normally pick a random and watch the first 5 minutes to see if it grabs me.... Wasn't expecting much as I hadn't heard or seen anything about them, but both kept me watching until the end of the episode and ready for more.

Well, there seems to be some confusion amongst us then (if you read the link I put in the post, someone is saying pretty much the opposite)... Yes, I totally agree with only installing the ADMX for the OS on the network, which is why I asked if I could pull just the relevant ones instead of all of them. This due to the fact that I need IE disabled, but the only options I got from asking that question was use the GPO...

Yeah, thanks that's pretty much what I thought the answers would be. I appreciate some schools choose a more liberal view on how best to encourage students to embrace that sort of thing, but could you just elaborate on point 3, as we are only a small Junior school and don't have any requirement for students to share between each other (only between themselves and the teacher). Alternatively from a safeguarding point of view (as I'm putting together an email to the Headteacher and Safeguarding Lead), how can I ensure students aren't uploading and sharing bullying/inappropriate content to each other?

OK, so to enable this GPO it appears I need to download and install the latest ADMX as it doesn't appear in our Group Policy options. However, although there 'might' be no issue with this (as the latest ADMX are Windows 11 based and we have no intention of going there for a long time): http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-11/228106-where-do-i-install-windows11-admx-files.html#post1957517 There is the chance of something going a bit wrong, so bearing this in mind does anyone know the specific ADMX files needed to copy in to the store to enable it? I have seen there was the option of copying them from a machine with the latest ADMX so it should work if I can find the individual files from the ADMX download?

Can't remember exactly what it was now, but I seem to remember there was a similar situation (might have been moving from XP to 7, or 7 to 10...) where there was all of a sudden a change in how Internet Explorer GPOs were handled. There was no way to undo a particular setting in the new ADMX and you had to have a machine on the old OS with RSAT or something to change the setting.

That's great, always nice to hear other people's opinions and about how they run their network/infrastructure/cloud platforms... But does anyone have any idea about the following before I spend my day trawling through Google help pages (without using 3rd Party apps/api hooks etc - just through the standard Admin Console), bearing in mind I have limited experience: 1) Does a student using Google Classroom need Google Drive enabled (I'm guessing yes to save their work)? 2) Can I limit file types uploaded to Google Drive (to stop them uploading hundreds of TikTok style videos or worse)? 3) Can students share (as default) between themselves (and if so can I stop it)?

Many thanks, I had just found the settings and implemented quotas after posting! So, now I am looking for a way to restrict file types... or at least file sizes... or maybe even have 'any' control over what they put in there... or visibility of what's being uploaded... One student seems to have 30 .mp4 files (of unknown size, origin, content). I've brought this to the attention of the Headteacher, who asked another couple of questions... Students who use Google Classroom need Google Drive is that right...? Also from a safeguarding angle.... Can students share these 'videos' between themselves?

Feels like I asked this question a while ago at the start of lockdown, but can't find the post (or the answer if there was one)... Recent changes in Google Drive prompted me to check how ours is doing. Long story short, user wanting to store more than her allowance on the server, so I told them to use Google Drive. They asked what the limit was and to be honest I wasn't sure... I seem to remember it wasn't a 'per user' thing, more of a 'per org' thing (which is ridiculous if so). Anyway, I had a quick look at the 'Google Dashboard' only to find a couple of worrying things: a) One teacher has managed to ram 14GB in... b) A number of students have used a fair chunk, one at 1.64GB and another at 1.59GB etc... Now, the teacher in question is a known hoarder (given the size of their folder on the server and some of the file dates - either that or too lazy/busy to ever do any housekeeping in the last 15+ years), but I can address this directly with her. The students are always going to be students and thus far have found at least 20 .mp4 files in one users drive, which I imagine are of them just generally goofing around... 99% of it won't be homework or actually even schoolwork as we don't use Google Drive like that here. At most I would expect a few MB of docs, slides etc. Bit difficult to see what's in their drives easily and vault doesn't seem to be very forthcoming with the file size... As you can tell I'm not really a Google user, so I need to know if I can: 1) Limit file types in a (free education) Google Drive.... and my $diety, if not, why not? 2) Limit drive size per user... see above.

Long shot, but as the title says, I need to run (without any other 3rd part software if possible): Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:XXXXXXXXXX /Source:\\SERVER\SHARE /LimitAccess What would be the best way to achieve this? It needs admin or system priv and should work in either CMD or PS, but I've found out that I can't get it to run properly as a start-up script as seems DISM might not have loaded (online/dependencies). Also it needs a restart (prompt y/n)... EDIT: I had the 'Remove-Capability' set as a start-up .bat script which ran, but: a) Didn't remove the capability b) Removed the line for it in the 'turn Windows features on or off' c) Now fails to remove the capability even if run manually, as it fails to find it (app still runs though) So now I have to add it back to remove it!

When red lights shows, wait here... Pedestrian crossing lights on my journey home from work (photo pulled from my dash cam). The actual crossing lights haven't actually worked for months (don't know why they haven't bagged them) and suddenly they just turned on for some reason, also the temp lights occasionally run out of battery over the weekend... I'd imagine it causes some confusion if you don't know the road!

So 'IE mode' in Edge still requires the guts of IE, just not the 'standalone browser'? Do you mean that it redirects to Edge on your machines, do you know what happens when you set that GPO and don't have Edge installed?

Yes (I've done this a couple of times - even put it on a VM once). As has been mentioned, keep your 'Products and Classifications' small and work up until you are sure you're getting everything you need, download and deploy only on approval, keep doing a weekly 'Server Cleanup Wizard'. Then once you are happy, change the GPO to point to the new server for a test selection, then roll out and you should be golden!

I saw the GPO, but we are not using Edge... pretty much went down the Chrome route early on before Edge became a proper alternative to IE.

So, how are we doing this throughout our networks then? Remove it or disable it...? Or will there be some sort of Windows Update (as mentioned for Flash)? Manually, GPO, Script?

Thanks all! Yeah none of those steps in the instructions take me anywhere that I can check TLS (the proxy settings in Windows is just that)! Isn't 'inetcpl.cpl' part of Internet Explorer then, doesn't that go when IE is uninstalled or prevented from running? It opens the same dialogue and has the same settings in as those we set in IE.

Does anyone know where you can set TLS or SSL in Chrome. We have a testing website that is going to be used soon and it states: "administrators should enable the school network and internet browser to communicate securely over the TLS 1.2 protocol" I've done a quick search and the instructions that I've seem to be either out of date or 1. Open Google Chrome. 2. Click Alt F and select Settings. 3. Scroll down and select Show advanced settings... 4. Scroll down to the System section and click on Open proxy settings... 5. Select the Advanced tab. 6. Scroll down to Security category, manually check the option box for Use TLS 1.2 7. Click OK When I open Chrome settings, there is no 'Security' section in 'Advanced'... ...and other 'helpful' websites with these same exact instructions then blatantly show a picture of IE settings...

I posted a thread in the Server 2012 forum about this, but received no replies (not surprising as it covers a vast array of things that could be wrong)... So I installed Wireshark on the server to capture packets (as the error was happening every 6 seconds it didn't take long) and narrowed it down to the following... I opened SOLUS and noticed a stuck download (no idea why, could be something to do with the change in URL but I sorted that last month so I can't see any reason for it to suddenly kick off last night), anyway I cancelled it and the errors stopped immediately. So, now the question is why was SOLUS even attempting to negotiate with the TLS v1 protocol (or does it always try this first), on the other hand is there something configured incorrectly on my server? Made even more strange as I increased logging and the next 2 events said: An SSL client handshake completed successfully. The negotiated cryptographic parameters are as follows. Protocol: TLS 1.2 CipherSuite: 0xC028 Exchange strength: 256 An SSL server handshake completed successfully. The negotiated cryptographic parameters are as follows. Protocol: TLS 1.2 CipherSuite: 0xC028 Exchange strength: 256 But it still seemed to fail and just repeat every 6 seconds.... I am going to set a download for tonight and see if it completes or fails and I come in to a full event log again!

We have rescued ex-racing greyhounds. They get up between 05:00 - 05:30... every morning... no matter the time of year... or weather... every... morning.... I guess that's what they've been used to for most of their lives and the oldest one now being nearly 11 isn't going to 'grow out of it' anytime soon. As has been said we tend to let the initial whining subside before going downstairs so as not to reinforce the behaviour (and let them think that whining = winning). Unfortunately we've found that sometimes the old girl is actually telling us she really needs to go out and you ignore that at your peril... The OH gets up early for work so she does the 'early shift' during the week (although it means she goes to bed at about 21:30) and I do it on the weekends and yes, it is annoying that they then proceed to pretty much sleep the other 23 hours of the day... We don't crate them obviously (not against it as such, my sister crates her GWP dogs and I don't have a problem with it if it's done correctly), but as we've decided that after spending most of their life in a cage, the point of recuing them is to let them sleep on the couch and generally just have a lovely life. Sadly we lost one of the other old girls recently and hope she spent her last couple of years loved and in comfort. She was in such a sorry state with a torn ear, scars on her nose, a leg that had been broken and not healed properly, corns on her pads (yes really, it's a hound thing), bad gait/posture from her injuries and teeth worn down to little stumps with the canines being worn into small points (we are told from from chewing the cage bars), head tremors etc. Although she was very timid and head shy (from beating) and had been absolutely hammered as a racer, after that she was bought by some (*@$%) kept in a shed and used for god knows what (flapping - unlicensed/unregulated racing or lamping are the most common). Although she didn't have time to be completely fixed physically (although we had little boots for her poor feet and hired an animal physiotherapist), emotionally she was improving, had started to come for affection occasionally and even got on the sofa (although she wouldn't cuddle up, she liked to be near you), she had even started doing little zoomies in the garden when we came home... I could go on about her for a while, but I'd better not, I just hope we made her life better for a couple of years even if we couldn't make up for what happened in the previous 8. Anyway sorry to hijack your thread, but safe to say discipline and routine are key, it 'should' get better if you are starting with a puppy and put in the time and effort... the thing is to a puppy (well any dog actually) YOU are their world and once they are awake, what could be better than being with their pack, going for a walk and getting fed! Plus, he's been used to being surrounded 24/7 by his previous family of brothers and sisters, who didn't mind being woken up and he's a PUPPY! Everything is fantastic, who can blame him for wanting to start the day as early as possible!!!! Just to mention, that one of the old girls suffered with terrible separation anxiety. I guess once she found herself in a home she was worried about being abandoned again. The OH is able to WFH and this reinforced someone being around all the time and so when leaving it seemed twice as bad. Anyway, after much training by the OH (even going out and sitting in the car or garden for 10/20/30 minutes) we've managed to get to a good couple of hours now. I only say this as it may be relevant, we were told to not make the return (or in your case the morning greeting) exciting in anyway, hard as that might be! On the weekend I get up and pretty much ignore them, let them out in the garden if they want while I have my coffee. The old girl goes out to do what she needs to do then goes back to bed, but the other two stay in bed now (as they know the score) until I start getting ready to take them out.

Just to add... The headphone jack has a lot more treble and the HDMI sounds much smoother (although this is also possibly due to the lower volume). A very unscientific method (quick field test with an iPhone and the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app placed in front of the speakers) shows the normal laptop headphone jack producing 90+ db and the HDMI only producing 70+ db.

Just wanted to see if anyone has used these before? Testing out the video and it's fine, but audio seems to be much quieter...? EDIT: I'm guessing it has something to do with the digital signal coming from the HDMI port being redirected into the analogue jack of the adapter... still disappointing if it can't be solved. I was hoping to just train staff to use the adapter for both, but it seems as if they will still have to use the laptop speaker jack and change it to that in the audio settings...

Where do you usually put them? You should have a 'Central Store' (Policy Definitions) in SYSVOL... 'Program Files' is for local GPOs I think. I always found that odd with the ADMX self extractor, (but I think you used to be able to change the destination) though I guess not everyone who uses ADMX has a SYSVOL or runs an AD/GPO based network...? As above, backup/copy your original ADMX somewhere safe first! EDIT: How has that not been widely shouted about on here...?

Yeah that makes sense, but I don't have anything in 'Program files (x86)' but I used the download as directed by Capita 'ConnectShellSetup11.exe' and as I said for me it went straight to %appdata% just like Teams etc. The Adobe Connect folder on my machine is 245MB so that also seems about right.

If that fails... I did this recently for Capita SATs marking and they said not to use the web version. Luckily it was only for a small amount of teachers but unfortunately didn't have a lot of time to search for answers (they needed it yesterday as always). As you have found it will only install for the logged on user, luckily that wasn't an issue as we only have one teacher account per laptop. What was an issue was that I couldn't seem to install as a standard user thanks to a big mess of SRP/Applocker policies and other security. So, what did actually work (to my surprise) was installing it as admin, then just copying the folder into the users profile (and making a shortcut on their desktop), I think it's an appdata thing so doesn't install as a program (a bit like Teams, Zoom etc). I still couldn't even run it as a standard user so made a (dirty) path rule in Applocker... Thanks received... none!

Yeah, it's plenty loud enough, just very, very old... I think the Headteacher just wants something a bit more modern so he can connect his phone via Bluetooth, or a USB for mp3s, plus the hall computer etc. The current setup just has a pair of classroom speakers at the front setup to the hall computer and those bigger speakers at the back with the amp. Unfortunately, the front setup is a bit underpowered and starting to crackle/drop out and requires everyone to plug various things in with adapters and splitters and for louder stuff like a disco or prom you have to use the setup at the back and as the old Yamaha is too old for USB/Bluetooth so requires someone to have their phone plugged in to it. So, I guess the idea is to get the bigger speakers to the front with the amp and have everything go through that.
