That's interesting. I've just rolled back from 12.10 to 12.04 (separate /home dir) as 12.10 was simply too buggy on my particular system. I find 12.04 much less buggy. There are a few apps I use (such as Amaya, Qtractor, Rosegarden and Darktable) which are updated more frequently than the stable Ubuntu repos, but backports, PPAs or standalone debs give no problems.

WHSmith are profitable (>£80m), always busy. Besides, they have an exclusivity on the Kobo Arc which I want for my birthday. Maplins? Again, they have a high mark-up, they stock a lot of staple stuff which doesn't date or subject to trends and fads, so these will probably last the course.

I've just had a look at this and I'm very impressed. It's a full blown IDE with .net support for VB.net, C#, Python and more. It looks like a very high quality IDE, and totally free, too. SharpDevelop @ic#code I've tried importing some quite complex projects I wrote using VS2010 and it handles them no problem. Users of Visual Studio will feel right at home.

I popped in to my local HMV on the weekend and it was packed, with a large queue. It seemed to be thriving. Anyway, I went into a large Currys/PC World and would have lost a 'spot the customer' game. Rows and rows of laptops, Hifis and TVs and nobody there. Not a soul.

Haven't tried it, but the Android lock-down "Surelock" software gets a good write-up in various places. It ticks all the boxes for me; an unrestricted Android (4.2 is in the post) and with book reader software (which actually seemed nice). To find the download link, you have to first find the 'News Item' that mentions the product, open up the news item, then look for the link. I'm assuming you've disabled Fast User Switching (FUS). If so, not even Administrators can unlock the machine. This is a flaw in Windows. Some Microsoft guy has developed a third party DLL replacement which allows an admin to unlock a machine with FUS disabled. It works very well and I've deployed the component through AD. How to Unlock Windows 7 Enterprise when another user has locked the screen? If I've misunderstood what you asked, ignore this.

That's one theory. Another says that poor PC/laptop/netbook sales are not the fault of the hardware or Windows 8. Rather, the PC per se is not a necessity for the tasks that people do. Buyers are realising this and buying tablets. As an aside, my cousin runs her entire fashion business from her 3G ipad. Blog updates, photos, email, facebook, appointments, .... everything done on a tablet that fits in her bag. I'm not saying she's typical, but that seems to be the way the wind is blowing.

As an aside, I regularly follow Tomi Ahonen's blog. He's an ex-Nokia exec. His blogs are very long, but if you have an interest in mobile technology they are well worth a read. I've been keeping an eye on the Firefox phone and that looks OK. It's not Firefox on Android, it's an OS in its own right. It runs HTLM5 stuff, natively and on-line. I watched the Ubuntu video and it looks very, very impressive. How do you get it on the phones? Are Samsung happy about this? How I wish Nokia would have got together with Ubuntu. Imagine Nokia's build quality with this OS. Elop threw away all Nokia's skunkworks teams and got back into bed with Microsoft. What a disaster that will be.

It's a personal choice of course, but I really like Unity. I use the word with caution, but it's satisfying to use. Hand on heart, I really think I've tried most desktops, but find Unity the most efficient and best to use. But that's the beauty of choice. Don't like it? Change it.

It's probably no accident. Why do you think I bought this? It's a lovely little Samsung Q330, quite a few years old, but still going strong. Samsung make very nice laptops, and this just shouted 'buy me'. The build quality is streets ahead of the HP stuff I've had. The Q330's 13" screen is a perfect size for me.

As @CyberNerd says, transferable skills are more important than learning a specific interface. As for apps, I think the wind will change direction in the next few years. The Jeane Dixon effect. It's strange how this prediction is so specific, despite the craziness of the predicted event. It tends to invite face-seeking eggs. I suspect that a routine Mayan calender event has been built up into something it's not. A bit like saying the year 2000 would bring some vague cataclysm or other. It's just an arbitrary calendar event. Most predictions only work after the event. Postdictions? The nonsense around Nostradamus for example. Follows maintain that somehow his predictions fit perfectly when you look back before the current time. Well, many vague things can be made to fit. Oddly enough though, they tend to be a bit vague and wooly when considering future events. Of course, if you're also a subscriber to the theory of b-time (block universe), then you'll know the world has already ended (and also not yet been formed).
